1. How did Adolf Hitler rise to power as a result of the Great Depression?
Adolf Hitler rise to power when he tries to overthrow the party ran by Otto Strasser, Strasser always thinked that hitler was trying deceive Strasser’s ideas. Inside the government, Hitler hired skillful man to argue against Strasser’s view. Eventually after Hitler’s action of always postponing determined actions, Strasser’s threw him self out of the government and basically retired and by this Hitler was able to take over power.
2. Describe in detail the following statement: “Despondency got worse the longer people went without a job.”
The word despondence means: “state of being despondent; depression of spirits from loss of courage or hope; dejection.” (Dictionary.com) so in short terms this statement means that the longer people went without a job the more people in the nation lost their hopes for a better economy. The people had no motivation whatsoever.
3. How did unemployment become “socially degraded” during this time period? Provide examples.
Back then, the unemployment became “socially degraded” because people who had lost their job felt really humiliated and without working and just staying home made them feel more careless. These people who had lost their jobs were intolerant of the other people who dressed better than them. For the old people, they simply didn't care because they were old and by the time depression was over they probably wouldn't be there anymore. Also some people became criminals to make money, it was like a new job for some people, they were running out of money and the only way to get money was by stealing money!
4. Explain how Communists mobilized the unemployed for their own political ends.
Back then, the communists was a group of people for the unemployed people. These communists hosted sets of attacks in working departments where most of people couldn't afford to pay the monthly rent, the called these ‘the red districts’. Eventually the communists became so dangerous that they started using fire arms to threaten people or certain locations like bars or pubs or wherever there was people working. The middle class were scared of the communist and by 1932 there were over 600,000 people claiming themselves as communists, so at the end the communists mobilized the unemployed by using violence and threatening the population
5. How were Communists intimidating to the middle class?
Communists were intimidating to the middle class because the communists group were growing at a very fast pace and they were slowly taking over the voting system in the elections and this was not a good for the middle class. By 1932 in the north west, nearly 10 percent of the communists group had an actual job. The communists always hosted parades, events and marching bands to march throughout the street and they always ended in conflicts with the police. The communists also had a clash with the social democrats.
6. Compare and contrast Communists to Social Democrats.
The communists from my perspective seems like a group of rebels, a group in which they would always organized small conflicts in the working class department, the communists was celebrating group for the unemployed, the communists hired criminals of the ‘wild cliques’ to host conflicts with the working department. Eventually, the communists were making people lose their job and they were a violent group in which the middle class saw the communists as a threat. The social democrats were a party inside the government in which they tried to fix the government and the communists were always interfering with the social democrats in the politically and physically wise. At that time the Social democrats ran the town.
7. Explain a Marxist-Leninist theory, Who supported this theory?
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the Marxist-Leninist theory, i think that in general means that the money is such a ‘something’ that will change everyone's life completely, it will make you a whole different person and since money can do such a change to a human being, the great depression is possible to do such a change to a whole nation and it was true. This theory mentions how God was a lie, no matter how much times you prayed for things to get better nothing would change. It also mentions how everyone seemed to become extremely independent and that if everyone was independent they wouldn't win this great depression. The Weimar Republic and Richard Krebs supported this Theory.
8. How did Nazism come to have a “respectable face?”
The Nazi party eventually had a “respectable face” or you can say, they had respect from others when the public actually saw that the Nazi party had an actual way out of the depression and the middle class grew, also the nazis invested its money into voluntary improvements which involved members from the nazi party. On top of that the Nazi party had so much respect that they gained assistance from small company and business. This is how the Nazis gained respect in Germany and also they proved themselves to be better than Weimar Republic in which many people in the government were losing their jobs and they were frightened that banks would become more complicated to deal with more than it already was. This was when the Nazi came in for the change.

1. How did Adolf Hitler rise to power as a result of the Great Depression ?
-Reason why Adolf Hitler rose to power in the Great Depression because he had a lot of support from a lot of different people. He came into power by being outspoken so people can hear his ideas, which people listened, example of putting he's hate towards the Jews. Speaking of the Great Depression, he wanted to save Germany. There were three things that will help Germany and him rise to power, " Idealism, patriotism, and national unity would create the basis for economic revival".
2. Describe in detail the following statement:" Despondency got worse the longer people went without jobs."
-Well what Despondency means "Depression of spirits from loss of hope, confidence, or courage; dejection". Reason why people were like this because of the Great Depression, people losing jobs and suffering. The more people that didn't work, more people that lost stuff example of houses and food. This was also bad for the economy because they way the Great Depression was running, there was little hope for people.
3. How did unemployment become "Socially degraded" during this time period? Provide examples.
-Socially degraded is basically " a break down in humanity due to the influence of an outside source of subculture". Examples of production in between Germany in 1928 to 1929, there was "no growth" in it. By the end "nearly two and half million were employed". If there's no people working of course the economy of ones nation is going to go down. It was so bad that even people, more in the male side was seen on the streets. This was embracing because they wanted ANY kind of work. Kids said " for the longer they are without work, the lazier they feel more and more humiliated…". Unemployment leads to other stuff like being a criminal. This is how unemployment was "socially degraded".
4. Explain how Communists mobilized the unemployed for there own Potical end.
-Communists, were "the party of unemployed parexcellence". What the communists did was recruited "young semi-criminals". They did rent strikes which put fear in people's eye, because they barely could pay rent. There was a little group called the "red districts", which would beat people who were with the "brown shirts". Taking over places like the bar, communists made sure that they pushed the unemployed into a corner.
5. How were Communists intimidating to the middle class?
-Just like the communists wanted to put the unemployed in the corner is the same fear they wanted to do to the middle class people. What they did was "proselytized among children in working class school teachers". Also what they did, was try to increase there chances in voting, so no one expect them would have a say.
6.Compare and Contrast Communists to Social Democrats.
-Well communists didn't care about the unemployed people what so ever. Communists made sure that they would make it worse for them. To me Communists were the bad guys, and I feel that the Social Democrats were good guys. But both sides were violent, the Minster of social Democratic killed the leader of the communists. At first there was just pure hate between the two, but got into a "love and hate relationship". So basically working together, but communists had more power.
7.Explain a Marxist-Leninist theory ? Who supported this theory ?
ReplyDelete-The person who supported the Marxist Leninist theory was Richard Kerbs. He's the one who grasp some of the concept of the theory. Reading what he grasp from the theory was everything was a waste of time and also a lie. If you was rich you had problems, even if you was poor you will have you fare share of problems. You couldn't trust no one even the police, even though there suppose to "protect" you. You had to fend for yourself, but the result you will lose. The best chance was to stay together, reason why so "we" can gain power and get out the triumph. I think this is what the Marxist-Leninist theory meant.
8. How did Nazism come to have a "respectable force" ?
-Nazism, greatly outstanding with respected. Reason why because there was getting friends they can talk to and "nationalist elites". People went to the way of the Nazism because it was the best way out for them. This goes with the Weimar Republic wanted to produce the "right polices" to keep Germany from collapse. This is why people started to respect Nazism because they actually tried to do something right.

The Great Depression
1. How did Adolf Hitler rise to power as a result of the Great Depression?
The way Adolf Hitler rise to power as a result of the Great Depression is because adolf hitler was well known and had a lot of support. He worked with people within the government. Adolf Hitler made germany feel like they have “found a savior” that’s because he wanted to save them.
2. Describe in detail the following statement: “Despondency got worse the longer people went without a job.”
The Despondency got worse the longer people went without a job because people didn’t want to do anything , they lost motivation to work, they put a stop to marriages , and kids. Men would just sit at home and play cards or go out for drives through public parks. But they noticed it was getting boring and that started to frustrate them.
3. How did unemployment become “socially degraded” during this time period? Provide examples.
The way Unemployment became “socially degraded” during this time period was because young kids were beginning to join gangs that did things they weren't suppose to do. For example the young people would meet together in buildings and look for food , steal to make a new living and would fight with the other gangs. Prostitution also took place it became very noticeable and economic failure happened.
4. Explain how Communists mobilized the unemployed for their own political ends.
The communists mobilized the unemployed for their own political ends because in the text it says communist were “ the party of the unemployed par excellence”. So by that being said the communist like to recruit the young “semi-criminals” that were part of the “wild cliques” and made them work for them and if they didn’t do the job right they would beat them.
5. How were Communists intimidating to the middle class?
Communists intimidated the middle class because of the threats they would say about the unemployment on the streets and because they grew very quick.
6. Compare and contrast Communists to Social Democrats.
From what I read I noticed that the Communists are people that don’t want others to work, they are a threat to other people. An example of that could be like when they hired the criminals to work for them. And a social democrats are people that try to fix the government but the communist are giving the trouble.
7. Explain a Marxist-Leninist theory? Who supported this theory?
The person who supported the theory was Richard Krebs and Weimar Republic. The Marxist-Leninist theory says that god was lie , police were enemies. They believe that men were to fight with a group not alone because they say “a man that fights alone never wins”. That isn't true but to them that is what they believed.
8. How did Nazism come to have a “respectable face?”
The Nazism came to have a “respectable face” because they had respect from others. The nazi party made friends that they can talk to and “nationalist elites” But it would have to be up to weimar republic to help up and make right choices to keep germany from falling apart and that is a reason nazis got respect because that the only thing people can get out of them.

#1) How did Hitler rise to power as a result of the Great Depression?
- Adolf Hitler rose to power as a result of the Great Depression because it gave him the opportunity to show how much he wanted to bring success to Germany. Through the Nazi Party, he was able to gain respect and followers because he demonstrated how good of a leader he was. Ironically, the Great Depression was for Hitler’s advantage.
#2) Describe in detail the following statement: “Despondency got worse the longer people went without a job.”
- “Despondency got worse the longer people went without a job.” This quote can sum up the Great Depression. Despondency means the state of feeling hopeless and that is exactly how pretty much everyone felt during the Great Depression. When I claim everyone, I mean everyone. From kids to adults. That is how serious the Great Depression was because even kids who do not really know what life is lost hope. People felt so hopeless that they basically “paused” their lives. I say this because a lot of people put off marriage plans and married couples put off having children. I think it is incredible that people did not want to have a family due to the fact that the economy was horrible.
#3) How did unemployment become “socially degraded” during this time period? Provide examples.
- Unemployment became “socially degraded” during this time period because people started to feel humiliated since they needed to work. This was not good because a lot of people became criminals since they needed to maintain themselves and in most cases their families as well. For example, many young people scavenged food and stoled to make a living. Also, people needed a job so badly that they did horrible things like selling their bodies. The older people lost all hope and did not care about finding a job because they believed that by the time the Great Depression ended they would be dead.
#4) Explain how Communists mobilized the unemployment for their own political ends.
- The Communists were a group of people that recruited unemployed youth to protest about the economy. Communists mobilized the unemployment for their own political ends. I claim this because they did not want to help others out. Instead, they attracted the youth who were criminals to inspire fear to whoever was not a communist. They wanted to be the most powerful group and that was very selfish of them.
#5) How were Communists intimidating to the middle class?
- The Communists were intimidating to the middle class because they made social threat against them/ Also, the Communists grew rapidly throughout the early years of 1930s. The Communists became a powerful group and staged many street events such as parades and ‘hunger marches’ to prove so. Therefore, the middle class feared them.
#6) Compare and contrast Communists to Social Democrats.
ReplyDelete- Communists and Social Democrats were two different groups during the Great Depression. In my opinion, that is the only thing I can claim that they had in common. The Communists did not care how well the people were doing. Instead they were very selfish. They threatened non-communists since most of them were criminals. On the other hand, Social Democrats were a group inside the government that wanted to help out with the economic issues.
#7) Explain a Marxist-Leninst theory. Who supported this theory?
- A Marxist-Leninst theory was a theory that claimed that God was a lie invented by the wealthy people to give the less fortunate hope. Also, this theory claimed that a man should not fight alone because he will not win. Instead, all men should fight together for success. Richard Krebs, a sailor from Bremen, supported this theory.
#8) How did Nazism como to have a “respectable face?”
- Nazism came to have a “respectable face” because the Nazi Party had good plans to get out of the Great Depression. They had Hitler and Hitler wanted Germany to succeed. He was going to do everything in his power to overcome this economic crisis. People noticed this and followed him. Since the people supported Hitler, Nazism gained the people’s respect.

1). How did Adolf Hitler rise to power as a result of the Great Depression?
ReplyDeleteThe Great Depression lasted from 1929 until 1939. It was a very big crash where everyone were left homeless, jobless, and even broke. Adolf Hitler wasn't going to accept this crash. He tried everything in his power to rise to power. One of the ways Hitler rose to power was by using the people of Germany in a democratic way. Hitler made many promises to the Germans so that they can believe him and have some belief in him. Some Germans knew that Hitler's promises were all a fake. They only went along because they knew he was doing it for Germany's own good. Hitler also used manipulation to get Germans to follow his rules. As a result having the Germans beliefs on Hitler would allow Hitler to be in control and have the Germans do whatever Hitler wants. However, there was a small percentage that the Germans put Hitler in power Because of his “successful policy initiatives".
2).Describe in detail the following statement: “Despondency got worse the longer people went without a job."
Despondency is a "state of low sprit caused by lost hope."
Interviewers interviewed many different people and notice a very big change in their attitude. Before the Great Depression people would stand up for their state and say that their state is the best (nationalism). However when people got interviewed in 1932 (3 years into the depression) it was caught to attention that they didn't have any hope for their state. Many people believed that their family will never have a job. Most people even believed that they were going to die pretty soon. Other people put off marriage or having kids just because of the fact that they didn't have enough money to pull it off. In conclusion, the statement “Despondency got worse the longer people went without a job."
Basically means that people no longer believed that their state would ever be as good as it was before the Great Depression.
3).How did unemployment become “socially degraded” during this time period? Provide examples.
Socially degraded means "Changing to a lower state."
Unemployment became "socially degraded" during the Great Depression because as the Great Depression continued the states went from low crimes, high sprit, and people feeling proud of themselves to more crimes, nearly no spirit at all, and people feeling humiliated. For example, the longer the people had no job, the less spiritual they were. This would cause the people to steal from stores and other people. They would steal because they had to feed their family. With most people having no money, it was just a result to steal. In conclusion. Unemployment become “socially degraded” during the Great Depression because all of these crimes and bad actions would be the reason for the rank of the state to go down.
4).Explain how Communists mobilized the unemployed for their own political ends.
The way that the communists prepared for the unemployed for their own political ends was by making the "semi-criminals" new members. Another thing that communists did was they created strikes going against people paying high rent. The communists would threaten and beat up the non-communists if they were associated with the brownshirts. They took over bars making it only communists were allowed inside. There was many actions taken by the communists but these are some of the many.
5).How were Communists intimidating to the middle class?
ReplyDeleteThe main reason why Communists were intimidating to the middle class was because "they grew rapidly in numbers thought out the early 1930s." The communists created events such as parades, hunger marches, and demonstrations. The communists believed very strongly in the employment rate rising up. With that being said, the communist were intimidating to the middle class because the communists wasn't going to stop fighting. They kept going for what they wanted.
6). Compare and contrast Communists to Social Democrats.
COMPARE:
The people in the Communists and Social Democrats both were going through unemployment. Richard Krebs was involved with both the Communists and the Social Democrats.
CONTRAST:
The Communists have mix feelings about the labour movement. Young workers felt betrayed but the Social Democrats the Social Democratic Party were also social fascists.
7). Explain a Marxist-Leninist theory? Who supported this theory?
The Marxist-Leninist theory says that the police who were there for good, were actually the bad people. It also says that god is a total lie and they he doesn't exists. The Marxist-Leninist theory also states that men have to fight with a group. They can never fight alone. Basically what this theory is saying is that everything is a lie and a waste of time. This is a simplified version of what the Marxist-Leninists theory says. In addition, the people who supported the Marxist-Leninists theory was Richard Krebs and Weimar Republic.
8).How did Nazism come to have a “respectable face?”
Nazism came to have a "respectable face" because they were very strategic with their planning to get out of the Great Depression. Hitler was the leader of the Nazi. Of course everyone followed Hitler because he was the man who made all of these great ideas to get Germany out of problems. With that being said if people respected Hitler they had to respect the Nazi's because Hitler was the leader.

1. How did Adolf Hitler rise to power as a result of the Great Depression?
The reason why Adolf Hitler rose to power as a result of the great depression was because of the public. People were desperate to see Germany’s economy turn around especially those who were unemployed and had no money. Hitler saw that the country needed a new leader and took advantage of it by using his persuasive speeches to convince people that he was the right guy for Germany.
2. Describe in detail the following statement “despondency got worse the longer people went without a job.”
Despondency means a loss in hope and confidence and Germany as a country became worse as time went on because of all the unemployment rates increasing. The people of Germany were losing hope and everyone was struggling in order to survive, some people became so desperate that they start stealing and crime rate went up. Men would do anything for a job, so the longer people went without a job the worse things would get.
3. How did unemployment become “socially degraded” during this time period? Provide examples.
Unemployment had become socially degraded because of all the people without a job and they got tired of not having one. Some people such as the elderly didn’t care anymore and stayed home and did nothing, others became criminals and did anything in order to make money which is why unemployment had become socially downgraded.
4. Explain how communists mobilized the unemployed for their own political ends.
The communists mobilized the unemployed for their own political ends by recruiting young criminals and using them to get whatever they wanted. They attacked working class districts and threatened people with guns so that people would fear them.
5. How were communists intimidating to the middle class?
The communists were intimidating to the middles class because of the rapid growth of communism as time went on. Their voting had also increased in the elections and they had events such as parades because the majority of communists were still jobless and the police couldn’t even stop their activities. As a result the middle class got worried because they feared that the communists would take over.
6. Compare and contrast communists to social democrats.
Communists are a group of people who want to get what they want by using violence and don’t care about anyone but communism. The communists made things worse for the economy and wanted to be the strongest group in Germany. The social democrats on the other hand wanted to improve the economy the right way through the government.
7. Explain a Marxist-Leninist theory? Who supported this theory?
I think the Marxist-Leninist theory basically meant that humans needed to work together no matter the sacrifice it takes in order to make something good happen to a country. In the theory it Sais “every employer was a hyena in human form, malevolent, eternally gluttonous, disloyal and pitiless.” I think this means that people would lie, do violence, and do evil things in order to succeed in life. Krebs had supported this theory.
8. How did Nazism come to have a “respectable face?”
Nazism came to have a respectable face because the group was very well organized and people put their faith in them since the Nazi party wanted to make Germany a better place. The Nazi party grew stronger and they got support from the public in Germany because of Hitler.

The Great Depression
1.How did Adolf Hitler rise to power as a result of the Great Depression?
From the Great Depression, Hitler was able to rise to power because at an industry club in January 1932, implored an audiences of around 650 businessmen that Marxism was the reason why Germany in such a mad state. He reasoned that a unity of idealism, patriotism, and nationalism had to happen in order for Germany’s economy to rebound. His speech caught the attention of businessmen such as Fritz Thyssen who were willing to provide funds for the Nazi party.
2.Describe in detail the following statement: “Despondency got worse the longer people went without a job.”
The statement “despondency got worse the longer people went without a job” is saying how people were in low spirits since many were unemployed and couldn’t provide for themselves or families. Despondency is the act of being low in spirit due to lack of hope or courage which many people were losing. This statement can be applied to Germany seeing how country was roughly affected by the Great Depression. Even children, who are usually bubbling with optimism, began to feel the overwhelming effects of the depression. Their hope too, started to wither away.
3.How did unemployment become “socially degraded” during this time period? Provide examples.
Unemployment had become “socially degraded” during this time period because it made people loose whatever self-respect they had for themselves and sabotaged their statuses. It was especially hard for men because a man’s status was based off of the job he had. You could catch men on the streets looking for jobs of any kind in the early 1930s. The more men went without work, the lazier they got and the more shameful they felt whenever they saw someone who had good clothes on.
4.Explain how Communists mobilized the unemployed for their own political ends.
The Communists mobilized the unemployed by recruiting young semi-criminals on the ‘wild cliques’ which were “gangs of young people who met in disused buildings, scavenged food, stole to make a living, fought with other gangs, and frequently clashed with the police”( packet 18). Using the members of the wild cliques, the communists were able to organize rent strikes and profess their control over red districts such as the Berlin proletarian quarter of Wedding. They were also able to mark down their own pubs and bars as well as try to convert children in the working-class schools to communism.
5.How were Communists intimidating to the middle class?
ReplyDeleteThe communists were very intimidating to the middle class because their numbers grew expeditiously during the early 1930s. “Their national membership shot up from 117,000 in 1929 to 360,000 in 1932”(packet 18). The communists also hosted parades, demonstrations, and other street events that usually ended in violent confrontations with the police.
6.Compare and contrast Communists to Social Democrats
In my eyes, both the Communists and Social Democrats were violent groups in the time of the Great Depression. The Social democrats were violent considering the fact that they murdered communist leaders such as Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg. The Communists also displayed acts of violence whenever non-communists would venture into the red districts that belonged to them. Sometimes the Communists would beat them up or even threaten them with guns if they thought they associated with the brownshirts.
7.Explain a Marxist-Leninist theory? Who supported this theory?
A strong supporter of the Marxist- Leninist theory was Richard Krebs. The Marxist-Leninist theory was the theory that God was a lie invented by the rich to give the poor a false sense of hope. It also claimed that policemen were the enemies and that all employers were “malevolent, eternally gluttonous, disloyal, and pitiless” (packet 18).
8.How did Nazism come to have a “respectable face?”
Nazism came to have a “respectable face” because it was reassuring to big businesses and it gained their support. The Nazi party also began to establish friendly relationships with conservative and nationalist elites. Many middle-class citizens began to favor the Nazi party for its dynamism and liveliness. They also saw Nazism as a possible solution to the depression that plagued them.

1. How did Adolf Hitler rise to power as a result of the Great Depression?
- Hitler rose to power as a result of the Great Depression by first being against Otto Strasser’s views. After Hitler kept postponing decisive action, he decided to remove the party of Strasser and his supporters. Due to the departure of the dessidents’, it was exposed that Strasser and his ideas had hardly any support inside the party. Hitler then decided to convince industrialists that his party did not threat them in any way. When Hitler decided to address to about 650 businessmen at the Industry Club, he charged Marxism as the source of Germany’s ill, which attracted his audience. It also attracted them by his belief in the significance of private property, proper rewards for the enterprising and the able, and hard work.
2. Describe in detail the following statement: “Despondency got worse the longer people went without a job.”
- In other words, the statement above basically means that people just got more and more depressed while not being able to have a job. Young people just wandered though the streets or sat at home being lazy. People called off their wedding plans, people who were already married called off having kids, people spent their day playing cards, walking through parks, or just going back and forth on the trains of Berlin’s Circle Line. They felt depressed by all of these things and they felt as if that was really all they could do.
3. How did unemployment become “socially degraded” during this time period? Provide examples.
- Unemployment became socially degraded during this time period because many people felt sad and humiliated that they did not have a job or anything to do. They got lazier and they all became frustrated at the fact that they wanted to dress like nice so they ended up becoming criminals or doing other bad things. For example, “Young people who met in disused buildings, scavenged food, stole to make a living, fought with rival gangs…There was a 24% increase in arrests for theft in Berlin between 1929-1932,” (Packet 18). This shows that they were humiliated so they decided to be involved in crimes because they still want to live.
4. Explain how Communists mobilized the unemployed for their own political ends.
- The Communists mobilized the unemployed for their own political ends by having Communist troublemakers recruit the young semi-criminals of the ‘wild cliques’. They arranged rent strikes in working-class districts, they advertised ‘red districts’ to inspire fear into non-Communists and they sometimes beat them or threatened them with guns if they were associated with the brownshirts.
5. How were communists intimidating to the middle class?
- The middle class was scared of the communists because they made politically specific the social threat formal by the unemployed on the streets and they grew very quickly in numbers during the early 1930s.
6. Compare and contrast Communists to Social Democrats.
- I believe that both Communists and Social Democrats are violent to each other to get what they want. The Communists were a group of people who were the party of the unemployed. The Social Democrats were a group inside the government who wanted to help in the economy and wanted to help the unemployed.
7. Explain a Marxist-Leninist Theory? Who supported this theory?
- The Marxist-Leninist Theory stated that the police was the enemy, that only cowards resorted to prayer, that god was a lie, and that men must stand and fight together. Richard Krebs supported this theory.
8. How did Nazism come to have a “respectable face?”
- Nazism came to have a respectable face by having Hitler as its leader. Since Hitler got all of his audience attracted to his ideas, they also decided to attract themselves to the Nazis. The Nazis and Hitler had a good plan to get out of the Depression as well as to help Germany get its power back. Also, the Nazis were not threatening to crush capitalism or build a ‘Soviet Germany’ if they became powerful.

1. How did Adolf Hitler rise to power as a result of the Great Depression?
Hitler saw the Great Depression as an opportunity to rise to power. The people of Germany were at their lowest point suffering from unemployment because of the Great Depression. They had no where to turn to in order to end the depression so Hitler took over. He wanted to put Germany back on top again.
2. Describe in detail the following statement: “Despondency got worse the longer people went without a job.”
Despondency means having low spirits due to loss of hope or courage. This statement fully describes what the Great Depression was and how it affected people. The statement says despondency got worse so that means that people were becoming more sorrowful and miserable and were becoming less hopeful of getting out of the rut that is the Great Depression. The biggest thing that happened because of the Great Depression was the lack of jobs and the increase of unemployment and nobody was able to acquire a job. As days went by people were getting gloomier because the hopes of getting a job were immensely low. Time would drag on and people would go on without jobs.
3. How did unemployment become “socially degraded” during this time period? Provide examples.
Unemployment became "socially degraded" during this time period because people were desperate to get something close to a job. People would basically do anything to support their families and didn't care about the repercussions. For example males and female became prostitutes, young men had nothing to do all day, and girls and boys would work doing things on the streets. Young men would just play cards at home and just walk around the city with nothing to do. Unemployed men along with young boys and girls would busk, do house-cleaning, mad street trading. All of this desperation made the people of Germany miserable and lose their self-respect.
4. Explain how Communists mobilized the unemployed for their own political ends.
The communists mobilized the unemployment for their own political ends by " recruiting semi-criminals of the 'wild cliques' " Together they would organize strikes and take over districts and would threaten and instill fear into non-communists who would try to enter. The communists would also take over pubs and bars. They would also attempt to convert children in working-class schools.
5. How were Communists intimidating to the middle class?
The communists were intimidating and frightening to the middle classes because the number of communists would grow quickly in the early 1930s. The communists' national membership grew from 117,000 in 1929 to 360,000 in 1932. An increase in voting strength also came along with growth in membership. Also in October 1932, three-quarters of people who joined the communist were jobless.
6. Compare and contrast Communists to Social Democrats.
ReplyDeleteCommunists and Social Democrats can be compared because they were both aggressive and violent. The communists would threaten the middle classes and would hurt them if they tried to cross their territories. The Social Democrats were also violent and aggressive because they were murderers. They murdered communist leaders Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemberg. They can be contrasted because more people would run to join the communists instead of the Social Democrats. The communists' membership would increase far more than the Social Democrats' membership.
7. Explain a Marxist-Leninist theory? Who supported this theory?
A Marxist-Leninist theory is a hatred in the police and God. People who supported this theory saw the police as enemies and thought of God as a lie. They think the rich invented God to make the poor content with their lives. They also thought that praying was for cowards. Richard Kerbs was a supporter of the Marxist-Leninist theory.
8. How did Nazism come to have a “respectable face?”
The middle class were beginning to lose their jobs and were running into trouble. The Nazi party the began to try and appeal to the middles class. Hitler declared Marxism as evil and as Germany's ills. He stated this in a speech to industrialist in düsseldorf. Hitler also said that private property was important. I believe that hitler being the leader of the Nazi party and him speaking about what was making the Great Depression worse helped Nazism get a "respectable face".

1. How did Adolf Hitler rise to power as a result of the Great Depression?
Adolf Hitler took advantage of the crisis occurring in Germany in order to rise to power. During the crisis, the people of Germany were organizing into extremist groups, desperate for a way out of their situation and Hitler, using his charismatic leader attributes and speech skills, offered just that and more. Hitler exploited the flaws of current leaders so as to gain sympathy and support, in conjunction with his inspiring speeches he was eventually appointed the Chancellor of Germany.
2. Describe in detail the following statement: “Despondency got worse the longer people went without a job.”
The word despondence means: “the state of being despondent; dejection, hopelessness, loss of courage” (Merriam-Webster English dictionary). The statement describes the dismal situation of the German people during the Great Depression, the more time they spent without a job and income the more emotionally depressed and negative the people became. Even children began to lose hope as stated in the reading packet: “… but now even we children have abandoned all hope” (Packet #18)
3. How did unemployment become “socially degraded” during this time period? Provide examples.
Unemployment was a severe humiliation to German people, since status of a person came from the job they performed. For example, an aristocrat or a politician being relegated to a more menial occupation during this time would have been seen as very socially degrading, but even worse was the status of those who had no job at all, they had no status. Further worsening the situation was the necessity to engage in criminal activities to survive, an action socially unacceptable amongst Germans but needed.
4. Explain how the Communists mobilized the unemployed for their own political ends.
The Communists took the situation as an opportunity to appeal to the unemployed people and the poor to join their party and help them to take the power. They made some of the already increasing number of unemployed affiliate themselves with the Communist Party so as to when the elections came, they would be constantly gaining votes and support until they won. The number of votes for the Communist Party did increase with each election but never enough to win.
5. How were Communists intimidating to the middle class?
The Communists were intimidating due to the fact that they frequently engaged in violence against the working middle-class and the fact that they recruited criminals and gang members into their ranks. The Communists held so-called “red districts” in non-communists were harassed or attacked. The most intimidating part for the middle class was that they were spreading and increasing in numbers at a quick rate.
6. Compare and contrast Communists to Social Democrats.
The Social Democratic Party was more associated with social fascism (right wing), whereas the Communists followed Marxist-Leninist theories and ideas (left wing). Both groups resorted to violence, the Social Democrats assassinated Communist leaders and Communists raided Social Democrats. The Communist Party was more of a “rogue” party since they were against the government, while the Social Democrats “played by government rules”.
7. Explain a Marxist-Leninist theory? Who supported this theory?
ReplyDeleteMarxist-Leninist theory states that there is no God, for it is a lie created by the rich to create false hope in the poor. It also states that an ideal society is moneyless, classless and all people must work together in a tightly-knit society to achieve progress. Moreover it also condemns imperialism as the highest form of capitalism. The Communist Party supported this theory, although many did not completely understand it, such as Richard Krebs.
8. How did Nazism come to have a “respectable face”?
The Nazi Party created a more presentable and respected reputation thanks to Hitler’s well organized and strategic plans to bring Germany out of its predicament. Since Hitler was such a charismatic leader, he gained sympathy and respect for him, his party, and his ideas (Nazism). It could be argued that the Nazis were seen as more “respectable” due to being followed by the elite and middle class, au contraire of the Communist Party being made up of the unemployed and criminals.

Hitler use all his power to help out the country, first the economy issue by creating more jobs. People felt little hope because they can work and supported their family. The Great Depression Questions:
1. How did Adolf Hitler rise to power as a result of the Great Depression?
Adolf Hitler rose from power as a result of the Great Depression because during this time, Hitler showed how much he wanted Germany to become a successful and stronger nation again. Hitler and the Nazi Party were able to get so much of respect and followers by the way he was a powerful and excellent leader throughout the Great Depression. Mostly the Great Depression gave Hitler an advantage to show his leadership and power.
2. Describe In detail the following statement: “Despondency got worse the longer people went without a job.”
Despondency means feeling hopeless, which the word and the following statement sum up the Great Depression and the way the people was during that time. During the Great Depression it was hard for many families to take care for themselves with mostly all they took a pause in life and felt hopeless. For example, kids really were not able to be kids, having fun and being happy because they saw so many people being so sad or depressed by the economy. There were marriage plans that many couples were looking forward too, but the economy affected them and were not able to have that wonderful day. Some of the couples wanted to have children and start a family, but they could not do it for themselves because the economy would have affected them too. The Great Depression affected so many people that life for them was hopeless.
3. How did unemployment became “socially degraded” during this time period? Provide examples.
The reason for unemployment became “socially degraded” during the Great Depression was because many people who did not have jobs felt humiliated or ashamed of themselves because they really needed a job to provide for them themselves and families. This situation was not good during this time because that created many criminals. It was a choice that some people had to choose, so that they could maintain themselves and families. For example, young people steal things as a living, people sacrifice their bodies to sellers, and older people felt hopeless and did not care about anything that was happening during the Great Depression because they think that when the Great Depression was over, they would be dead by that time.
4. Explain how communists mobilized the unemployed for their own political ends.
Communists are a group of people that wanted the unemployment youth to protest about the economy. The Communists formed their young unemployment group for their political ends because they did not want to help other people, but wanted to help themselves, mostly they were a selfish group. The main goal for the communist was for the group to be very powerful and respected from the other groups.
5. How were communists intimidating to the middle class?
The reasons of Communists were intimidating to the middle class because they made many threats that scared the middle class. The Communists was growing as a group during the early years of 1930’s that they became a powerful group that they created many events and parades to prove who they were as a group. All this made the middle class intimated by them and feared on what the group was going to do next.
6. Compare and contrast Communists to Social Democrats.
Communists and Social Democrats both were very different groups during the Great Depression. They both faced unemployment. The difference between the groups was that the Communists were mostly selfish and did not care on helping other people, and threatened non-communists. Then there are the Social Democrats, a group that was with the government that wanted to help out people with economic issues.
7. Explain a Marxist-Leninist theory? Who supported this theory?
ReplyDeleteA Marxist-Leninist is a theory that they stated God was a lie, which they believed it was created by the wealthy people to give many of the less fortunate hope. Another thing was that it was claimed that a man should not fight alone because there is no way one man would win a fight. They believed that men should work together and will be able to win. A sailor from Bremen, Richard Krebs supported the Marxist-Leninist theory.
8. How did Nazism come to have a “respectable face?”
Nazism came on having a “respectable face” because the Nazi Party had many good strategies of getting out of the Great Depression. The Nazi Party made friends and created a strong relationship with conservative and other nations which were the “nationalist elites.” Many people went with Hitler throughout the Great Depression because he was strong leader and, had many great ideas to get Germany out of economic problems and make Germany a stronger nation again. There were so many people that respected Hitler that Nazism was gaining peoples respect.

-During this time people were laidoff came to feel humiliated and careless. People would also become envy and jealous of te working class people. The older people that lost their jobs felt that they had no reason to live anymore. People with jobs where maybe mean to the non-working class.

-The communist were people that were unemployed and angry and they wanted revenge so they started riots and robbing department stores to change the government. The Great Depression
1. During the 1930’s, the Great Depression rose to a maximum attacking and entering every country; Money was worth less than an actual item, food was really expensive everything seemed unreachable. Germany was already humiliated by the conditions they were in and because of their previous defeat in WW1. This was the time for a new strong leader to arise from places that no one can find one; a leader with character and respect, this was Hitler’s time. The Weimar Republic was not trusted by their people so a change needed to be done; that’s when the Nazi party won more seats in the House of Representatives and Hitler was appointed as chancellor. This man was a very outspoken person and went directly to talk to those who were desperate for a change in the country. This was basically everyone which is why he automatically found out the way to convince them, propose to violate the Treaty of Versailles and go to WW2 to then obtain victory which as we know was never obtained.
2. The statement, “Despondency got worse the longer people went without jobs” pretty much explains itself. Economy runs by the people, it can be manipulated ether for the Good or for the Worse. At this time when the great depression started to spread, people tried to maintain the constant money flow but ended up failing. The more money that wasn’t flowing, the less job there were and the less jobs there were, the less money currency and higher economy would the country have. This was a desperate time because money is what makes the exchangeable item for food or things needed; so without working there was no money and without money there was no food.
3. Looking into our reading and some online research I got to find why Not having a Job was socially disrespectful and not acceptable. There was no more “whose better” or “rich or poor” everyone was under one big global depression. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE was trying to look for a job to at least have money to feed their family and kids so if you didn’t have a job, there was nothing I need to tell you because if I was fighting to have one, I couldn’t waste my time in having someone who wouldn’t help or anything in particular.
4. Communism is a form of political theory that has the meaning in the word “common”. Everyone must live and work and gets paid according to what they can do and how much they need. The Unemployed just wanted money to maintain themselves so once a job was offered through the political communistically way, they would accept it and be happy with what they got because that’s what they needed. Of course now it’s not like that because everyone wants more but back in the depression period, all everyone wanted was some type of way to obtain money to maintain them. They all started as common people under the depression and rose as common as well.
5. After a while after rising into communism, the separation of common was broken and Upper class, Middle Class and Lower class were created. The lower class showed the most need but if they weren’t about to complete a task, when it came down to do work it was no good. The upper class had those who were fast and intelligent that got up there threw their smarts but then we have this class that is in between these two and seem to be frightened by the communistic party. I believe that from what I can understand, this class was scared because it was in between these other classes so you could have ether failed to do a job and get less money and fall into the Lower class or be a step close to getting to the upper class and of course being under a communistic reign, there was no arguing “you get what you get and you don’t get upset.’ This was just a society built into this form of matter, the governmental rules didn’t care what you thought, your job is to follow what there is for you and that is it.
ReplyDelete6. Comparing Communism with Social Democrats is difficult to understand that they have so much in common. Some areas that they have in common that I can say from my research (without getting into too much detail because it’s a lot is…
• Economic System
• Philosophy
• Ideas
• Key Proponents
• Religion
• Economic Cordination
• Social structure
• Political Movements
• Private property and ownership structure
All of these points and many more that I didn’t mention are just part of the ideas that are compared between these two forms/ideas of a government running. Now, when it comes to contrast there is only one thing that is different about these and that is Economic and Political differences. In a Social Democratic (socialist economy) when producing goods, the purpose is to distribute them but data kept by the government to be controlled. In the other hand, Communistic Economy and political power, there is no data saved by the government (no central government) everything is collected and distributed equally among everyone.
7. The Marxism-Leninism was an ideology composed of Scientific-Socialistic theories by Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx. At first known as Marxism but then Vladimir Lenin added on his theories making it Marxism-Leninism. This were combined ideas that would be like a guide to those who wanted to have it implanted into their party/government etc. to be used. Eventually, this started to become recognize and two big parties that recognized this were the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Communist International during the 1920’s till proximately the 1940’s. This became the ideology of the communist movement, eventually being implemented into Communism for good.
8. Nazism among fascism (Hitler and Mussolini) were some types of people who were together but communism didn’t exactly associate with these leaders in these governmental ideologies. Nazism became the respectable face because of Adolf Hitler. Hitler had the touch to move his people and making them act because he had promised to keep Germany away from the depression if and only if they did as he said. Fascistic Leader Mussolini saw this and agreed with Hitler’s ideas while Communism wanted to be on its own but still saw that Nazism was on the movement for planning and invasion, WW2 was on its way. Three war, Nazism got respect above others but of course After Hitler’s death, Nazism was seemed as a failed project but its memories are still alive.

Nazism came to have a respectable face, because Hitler was very skilled at speeches and well respected. And because he was well respected every thing he did was too and that was the Nazi party. 1. How did Adolf Hitler rise to power as a result of the Great Depression?
ReplyDeleteAs many were dissatisfied with the government’s actions in response to the Great Depression, many ‘revolutionary’ groups arose claiming the ability to solve the economic crisis. The Communist Party was chief among these organizations, and the nature of the party made it a stepping-stone for Hitler and the Nazi Party. Communists composed of uneducated, working-class individuals with no resources. While they had the extreme loyalty of a few, they expressed in their popularity, a disdain for all other proposed forms of government, no matter how close to their own ideals. They rejected a large possible base of support but still took over a great majority of the political sector and, when it collapsed on itself, it paved the way for Hitler. He then went on to win many peoples support by carefully choosing which sets of propaganda to promote to certain groups to gain their loyalty. Through this support he was able to grab the power that was practically handed to him by the folding government and desperate people.
2. Describe in detail the following statement: “Despondency got worse the longer people went without a job.”
The loss of hope that unemployment caused the working masses was destructive. To a people whose social purpose was to work and live a respectable, orderly life, being jobless would become emotionally devastating over time. The longer Germans continued unemployed, the more negatively their perspectives evolved. To regain work would be a sign of hope and good fortune in the future. The longer one went without this positive reinforcement to their hope, the less they put stock in it. This despair led to a general depressive state which led many to cancel long-term plans and resign to unproductivity.
3. How did unemployment become “socially degraded” during this time period? Provide examples.
Due to the despondency of the unemployed, their own goals and role in society gradually became less and less productive and steadily more detrimental to themselves and German society. The unemployed would first search for work as was to be expected, and when none could be found available to them, they would create it through odd and unnecessary jobs and then panhandling. Often, unemployed Germans would, at the time of the Great Depression, resort to crime and gangs, starting riots and putting their efforts towards nothing or nothing positive. As a German student said “[The unemployed] often don’t want that [to live] any more at all (Evans 232)”.
4. Explain how Communists mobilized the unemployed for their own political ends.
As a party almost wholly composed of the unemployed, the Communists used this to their advantage and as a point of perspective superiority. They promoted the righteousness of the unemployed and, using young persons in this sphere, utilized violent tactics to intimidate those of other political beliefs or social stations. They made being unemployed a proud thing to lord paver others and created hunger marches and the like along with lawless and desperate political action.
1.How did Adolf Hitler rise to power as a result of the Great Depression?
ReplyDelete- Germany’s economy was only getting worse and worse. People where desperate for money and were trying anything to get it or even trying anything to get a job. They tried prostitution (both men and female) which was a noticeable widespread. Everyone and anyone tried anything whether it was housing or street trading just to get a day’s earnings. But a huge part of this was the gangs. They stole from people to make a living and hid in disguised buildings. The gangs fought with other rival gangs and constantly with police so you can see how Germany’s economy was spiraling down a path of misery and criminality. With all of this happening, the people began to follow into the political area as a resort out of the depression. They wanted to try anything no matter how extreme it could have been, the people of Germany were ready to try something new and I guess that “something new” was Adolf Hitler.
2.Describe in detail the following statement: “Despondency got worse the longer people went without a job.”
- Despondency (A state of low spirits caused by loss of hope or courage) got worse the longer people went without a job because a lost of people hoped that they would soon get one and since it was during the depression when hundreds and thousands of people were becoming unemployed that was most likely an impossible task. A lot of people started resorting to prostitution for a way of making money. Couples even put off getting married and married couples put off on plans of having children. So you can see how despondency was getting worse the longer people didn’t have a job.
3.How did unemployment become “socially degraded” during this time period?
- Unemployment became socially degraded because people was tired of having no job and was starting to feel humiliated trying to find one and feeling. Some examples were that kids were some becoming aware that their parents will not be able to gain a job and they have no chance of getting one so they began to join gangs.
5. How were Communists intimidating to the middle class?
ReplyDeleteCommunists refused the opinions, support or help of the middle-class although they too were suffering from the depression. They used violent methods to frighten those of a slightly higher social class and scared them to the point that many in the middle-class feared their ability to hold a job. Communists threatened all others and created no place for the middle-class in their political plans, being so aggressive in their propaganda that all but the working-class feared economic collapse and being squashed out under a Communist reign.
6. Compare and contrast Communists to Social Democrats.
Both Communists and Social Democrats possessed a great hatred for all others, especially each other and used their exclusive ideals to maintain the loyalty of their supporters. Violence was also a favorable tactic of both parties, and murders of each other’s’ leaders was not uncommon. The two parties were not merely aggressive mirror images of each other however. While both wanted political revolution and a greater focus on the previously oppressed social classes, their methods differed. The Social Democrats preferred a slightly more general approach and threw the Communist Party to the wayside while that Party became more exclusive and hateful.
7. Explain a Marxist-Leninist theory? Who supported this theory?
The ideas of working-class solidarity and a lack of respect for law in the face of a revolutionary goal are intrinsic to Marxist-Leninist ideology. The Communist Party truly clung to this creed, going beyond the law to express their own worth and expressing a deep disdain for all employers and those in positions of power and access to resource. One Communist mentioned by Evans that clung to these ideals was Richard Krebs, a loyal member of the Communist Party.
8. How did Nazism come to have a “respectable face?”
Hitler cleverly picked his propagandistic battles and thus earned Nazism a “respectable face” through his selective speech before Nazism’s true goals became apparent in action. When speaking to more general audiences, he would omit more specific campaigns such as anti-Semitism, and not mention his weak idea of Social Darwinism to intellectuals while pandering these ideas and philosophies to more receptive audience. He carefully rode this wave of support towards power until he was sure that his actions could not be sufficiently objected to or suppressed.

4.Explain how Communists mobilized the unemployed for their own political ends.
ReplyDelete- Lets just get it clear that Communism was the party of the unemployed. They recruited young criminals from the gangs in the depression and organized rent strikes in some of the working class districts where people were already struggling to pay their rent. There were places called red districts that put fear into non-communist people. They even politicized parents’ associations and the middle class teachers including those with the left-wing convictions.
5.How were Communists intimidating to the middle class?
- The communist didn’t only intimidate the middle class by politically explicit social threat they posed by unemployment on streets but because they grew in large numbers and they grew rapidly. Then their voting strength increased election to election. Party leaders began to think there was a terminal crisis of the capital system at hand.
6.Compare and contrast Communists to Social Democrats.
- Communists and Social Democrats both began to fall into their final years of the Republic. Social Democrats rejected class based societies. While on the other hand Communists believe the working class and allies must do what they have to in order to make a change.
7.Explain a Marxist-Leninist theory? Who supported this theory?
- This was a theory claiming that policemen were enemies. God was a lie and that he was invented by the rich so that the poor could be content with their yoke (a wooden crosspiece that is fastened over the necks of two animals and attached to the plow or cart that they are to pull.) and how only cowards make prayers. Krebs was the one who supported this theory.
8. How did Nazism come to have a “respectable face”?
- The Nazi’s became a respectable face by the way Hitler speeches moved the people. His propaganda was very useful as it helped him rise to his power. The Nazi’s had very strategic plans to get out the depression and when the communist portrayed their meetings as conspiratorial terms the Nazis went out of their way to deny it.

1.) Adolf Hitler influenced the German population through his political Nazi party. He also had built a very strong relationship with Germany’s prime minister. So that increased his chances of rising in power. The way he lead Germany is why the county fell into the Great depression. Adolf Hitler promised the citizens in Germany that he would solve their economic issues. For example, he promised to fix unemployment problems. But his plans failed to do so. So that’s how Adolf Hilter rises to power as a result of the Great depression.
2.) “Despondency got worse the longer people went without a job” Most people lost their self-respect due to unemployment. Despondency is basically feeling downcast and disheartened. People got lazier and lost hope. Unemployment gave no hope to children, it impacted them a lot. People lost their ranks, and got socially degraded. “Despondency” increased abundantly because people had nothing to live for, and couldn’t make money.
3.) Unemployment became socially degraded during that time period because most people deprived of their status. Not having a job was already bad enough, but losing your rank was very depressing. For example ”undermined their status, especially that of men, in a society where men’s prestige, recognition, even identify itself deprived above all from the job they did,” Men felt as if they were weak, because they couldn’t provide for their family. So that affected their status, because that was the main priority. Another example is that children lost all their hope. Sociologists, asked school children their own opinion on unemployment, and majority of them spoke about their parents being unemployed. That gave children no hope, because they grew up with unemployed parents. So that’s how unemployment became socially degraded.
4.) The way communists mobilized the unemployed for their own political ends is that they had communist agitators get young semi-criminals of “wild cliques” to prepare strikes in the working-class district. In the working class district people was not even able to afford or pay their rents. The communist converted these people to another faith or religion, and they threatened them with guns. That’s how communists mobilized the unemployment for their own political ends.
5.) Communists were very intimidating to the middle class because sometimes communist would “politicized parent’s associations “that would sometimes bring great tension to the middle-class teachers. Communist were frightening, because they grew rapidly and that’s what the middle-class was afraid of. Many people were joining the party.
6.) Communist are basically leaders that make up their own rules and whatever they planned is what has to go. They were independent. Social demarcate cared what people had to say, they believe that people has a right to make a change. Social democrats will do that change based on peoples perspective.
7.) The Marxist-Leninist theory was based on principles of class conflicts. This theory did not agree with any political party that existed at that time. The communist supported them because the communist had a mid of their own. Just like the theory did.
8.) Nazism came to have a “respectable face” because it was making business to come much easier. Hitler had win over any big business. Never the less Hitler had become a caption of industry nominating all business. Many had now supported the Nazis party.
