    1. Describe in detail the air raids in Japan.
Air raids that took place in Japan mainly occurred in the area of Tokyo. In total, there were over 250,000 bombs dropped including one bomb dropped from an aircraft named B-29 Bomber and one specific bomb that weighed over 60 tons. United States at first had the strategy of air raiding the Japanese military bases, they changed their mind onto bombing Japan’s mainland! Most of the air raiding took place at night in which it was harder for the Japanese to defend their selves. The United States was set out to destroy cities. Some of the main cities were Tokyo and Nagoya. These air raids that took place in Japan and Nagoya took over 300,000 lives, including soldier and civilians, but it was mainly civilians.

    2. Compare and contrast the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Iwo Jima.
Battle of Okinawa started in April 1945, battle of Okinawa was a seizure plan made by the United States, This was just one of the three lands that the U.S. had planned on taking over. Okinawa is the largest of the Ryukyus Islands, according to history this battle was one of the most important naval battles in the World War II. Taking over this island was no easy task for the United States forces, the island itself was really big. According to United States, on that specific island there over 60,000 Japanese troops with more than 3 airfields. Another problem that the U.S. confronted was the fact that they weren't able to get their hands a much information about the island which was they would need which would be something that makes the take over easier. After a while, The U.S. forces actually found out there were over 100 thousand Japanese troops and over 400 thousand civilians! The island was commanded by Lieutenant Ushijima and the orders given to him was that the islands was to be under control at all costs. When the United States first made its approach at April 1st 1945, automatically Japanese were using planes as their main strategy for defense while the U.S. brought together over 250 warships and more than 1000 normal ships. At the end the U.S. had lost over 7 thousand soldiers. on the other side, the Japanese over over 100 thousand men and more than 7 thousand were taken as prisoner. In conclusion the U.S. won this bloody battle even if heavy damage were taken. This battle last a little more than a month
Battle of Iwo Jima was once again no easy assignment for the United States. A bloody battle that lasted exactly 36 days. For the Allied forces, taking over Iwo Jima was going to be an advantage for the allied forces because they would be able to destroy any enemy's air and naval capacity. Battle of Iwo Jima was a very similar to the Battle of Okinawa. Battle of Iwo Jima was just almost the same, United States forces would come in ships and take over another one of Japan's main island, but this battle involved less soldiers from both sides. Once again, United States took victory home with killing almost all of the Japanese defenders that were in the Islands

    3. Analyze in detail the Battle of Tokyo Bay.
The battle of Tokyo Bay was plan from the United States that was to eliminate any Japanese ships that came up on the radar. The attack on Tokyo Bay was a battle on the pacific, the ship that took out many other Japanese Ships was called USS DeHaven, it was from the Destroyer Squadron 9. Approaching Tokyo Bay was also no easy task, they knew that Tokyo Bay was guarded from air, to seas and land. This particular ship sailed from Missouri all the way to Tokyo. Also making this approach was a smart idea because it wouldn’t cause so much damage to the U.S. This approach on Tokyo Bay was also the first time the United States used the vessels or submarines you can say. The United States took the victory at the end of this battle, This was Japan’s first lost.

  2. 4. Why did World War II end with the surrender of Japan?
World War II ended at the summer of 1945 with the Japanese surrendered from the heavy attacks. Japan surrendered after the United States dropped 2 atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These attacks were so bad that it killed nearly more than 75 thousand civilians and most part of both Japan’s main city were destroyed. When cities are destroyed this meant that the Japan’s economy were also being destroyed slowly. At this point Germany was no longer allied with Japan they had already surrendered. Japan was almost by itself, Japan was out numbered. The two atomic bombs really made Hirohito himself surrender, he finally realized that Japan could no longer go on to war. When Japan surrendered, it was official that the war was over, up to 1945, really the only nations fighting were Japan and the U.S. with USSR threatening to declare war.

    5. Describe the fall of imperial Japan?
The fall of Imperial Japan was basically Japan losing power. The fall of Imperial Japan occurred near the end of the War. Lets say Japan wasn't such of a good country back then. Taking over land, invading land, causing war with other countries and many other things. Japan started to take heavy losses from the Allied forces near the end of WWII. Japan realised they were just taking loses after loses in battle against the Allied forces. Japanese officially surrendered after the atomic bomb that was dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This just hit Japan in the head like, “Thats enough! we get the message United States! We have no hope! We surrender” Japanese surrendering at the end of the war was basically the fall of the Imperial Japan, Japan maybe did all those bad things and nothing happened to the country at the time but at the end Japan faced really bad consequences

    6. Evaluate the importance of naval warfare in WWII. Three specific battles must be discussed in detail.
Naval warfare was one of the most used warfare back in World War 2. It was important both in the Pacific and Europe, Allied Forces had a very big advantages against their enemies. One of the first naval battle ever in World War II was the battle of Coral Sea when Japan lost to Allied forces losing ships due to Allied aircraft attacks, then after that was the battle of Midway, another victory for the Allied forces at the pacific and a lost for the Japanese, losing many of its supplies sources. At last, another battle that gives Allied advantages to win victories in the Pacific was the well known naval battles between Royal Navy (Great Britain) against the Italian fleets. The battle of Cape Matapan gave the Royal Navy control of the Mediterranean sea. Which at the end Allied forces clearly had an advantage with Naval Warfare which is also why they came with victory at the end of World War II

    7. Compare and contrast the methods used to achieve victory during WWII on land and at sea.
The only method that i was able to find which was mainly used by the Allied forces was the used of Submarine in the Pacific. Allied forces used Submarines to destroy Japanese Ships that were full of merchandise, with this being said, it meant that it would damage Japanese’s economy, it would just complicate Japanese method of rearmament and “cut oil supplies” (Humanities 360). How was this a way to gain victory? It was just a way to slow down the Japanese forces which was a big advantage for the Allied forces.

    1. Describe in detail the air raids in Japan ?
-Japan's Air raids were mostly conducted in the World War two, first one was in 1945. Air raids would cause "extensive destruction". Air raids can cause 241,000 to 900,000 people. One attack was on Yokohama during the 1945 in May, were the B-29 Super fortress bomb them, and this plane was huge. This plane played a role in World War two and Korean war, also the plane used incendiary bombs, which would cause fires.

    2. Compare and Contrast the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Iwo Jima.
-The battle of Okinawa, which is also called the Operation Iceberg was fought in the island called Ryukyu. This was a battle with Japan and the Americans. For the Americans side 12,000 were killed and 38,000 wounded while on the Japan side 110,000 were wounded and about 7,000 captured( I'm guessing imprisonment). This battle was 82 days, was about April until June 1945 and this battle was some form of "base air operation",which the allied powers wanted. This was a battle in which Japan truly lost, also a lot committed suicide in this battle as well. This lead to two months after this battle Japan surrendered because of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagosaki. The Battle of Iwo Jima also called Operation Dectachment was February 19 to March 26,1945 and said "was a major battle in which the United States Armed Forces fought for and captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese Empire". The casualties are different from the battle of Okinawa, the Americans lost 6,821 people, two were captured but recovered, about 19,217 were wounded and a carrier sunk. For the Japan 18,844 were killed, 216 were prisoners and 3,000 of them went into hiding. This battle for the Americans having a plan of trying to get complete control of the island. This battle was also quicker then the Okinawa battle because this battle only lasted for five weeks. This battle in this week span had "the fiercest and bloodiest fighting of the war in the Pacific of World War Two.

    3. Analyze in detail the Battle of Tokyo Bay.
-Battle of Tokyo Bay was a battle were destroyed. It said that all the bombing that happen put Japan in "economy devastated". This was a war with the United States in which Japan lost, and got Okinawa taken away. Since the Battle of Tokyo Bay, Japan had surrender which is called the "Japanese Instrument of Surrender", this also happened in September 2,1944. Some people would know that day as "Victory over Japan Day".

    4. Why did World War 2 end with the Surrender of Japan ?
-The World War Two ended with the Japan surrendering because Germany was out of the way, and Germany was a huge part in the World War Two era; and having them out the way made Japan the next target to get rid of. The Americans made sure of that because on September 2,1945 Japan had surrender from war because August 6,1945 dropped the "atomic bomb" in the city of Hiroshima. The United States really gave it to Japan by taking out their naval and air force which made them ending the World War with the Surrender of Japan.

    ReplyDelete
  5. 5. Describe the fall of imperial Japan.
-Well since Germany surrendered May 1945 all the attention went into Japan. The B-29 which was one of the Americans powerhouse planes bombed in the area of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There was about 80 days of battle and at the end the United States captured Okinawa. On both sides there was about 150,000 people died on both sides."Japan surrendered on September 2,1945", and after World War Two was done.

    6. Evaluate the importance of naval warfare in World War Two. Three specific battles must be discussed in detail.
-Naval warfare is the"combat in and on seas, oceans or any other major bodies of water such as large lakes and wide rivers. One battle was the Battle of Midway which was a huge turning point in the Pacific. The U.S Navy defeated the Japan naval force. Japan had lost four carriers and a destroyer, while the U.S one carrier and one destroyer. The second one was the Battle of Okinawa which was an invasion of Japan and was one of the longest most greatest war in the World War Two era. Started in April 1,1945 were marines and soldiers landed, which turned into the biggest sea and air war. Battle came to conclusion of Japan surrendering to the atomic bomb. And lastly the Battle of the Philippine sea which was a two day battle;June 19 to the 20 in 1944. This battle"eliminated the Imperial Japanese Navy", to bring in a long carrier. This battle was one of the five for carrier v.s carrier fight.

    7. Compare and Contrast the methods used to achieve victory during World War Two on land and at Sea.
-One way of achieving naval victory was the naval mine which was mainly used for destroying ships and submarines. They were also used for protection. Another method which was for land was Demining which was also called the mine clearance which was the process of trying to get rid of naval mines and land mines which were methods in getting victory's in World War Two. Another is submarines and aircrafts which were mostly in every battle between Japan and the U.S. There were the two factors on which you needed to secure in indeed victory. I guess the only contrast I can say is how they were use, and different areas they were used in.

    1. Describe in detail the air raids in Japan.
The air raids in Japan had been crucial and 16 square miles of Tokyo had been destroyed since there were a lot of bombs dropped. There were many industries and factories that were destroyed such as cottage industries. Also there is an estimate that about 100,000 people had died only in Tokyo because of the raid and some of the people also died because there was barley any oxygen because of the flames so it made it hard to breathe. During the raid on Japan many of the American planes were getting lost and many Americans had died bombing Japan. These raids didn’t happen all at one every couple of days America would attack different parts of Japan, especially the major cities.
    2. Compare and contrast the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Iwo Jima.
The battle of Iwo Jima had been a long harsh battle that had took about a month for Americans to reach victory. About 20,000 Japanese soldiers were killed and 7,000 American soldiers were killed, which is a huge difference. The Japanese had used caves, bunkers, and hidden tunnels to protect themselves which made it harder for the Americans to kill them. Eventually the Americans took them out after a hard long battle. The battle of Okinawa was similar to Iwo Jima but the only difference was that this battle was much bigger and more people died. 12 thousand allied soldiers had died about 38,000 thousand were wounded and Japan on the other hand had lost about 100,000 soldiers which basically states how big of a battle it was. Many boats and planes were destroyed but America had taken complete control of the island towards the end and Japan had no choice but to retreat because they lost too many soldiers and war necessities.
    3. Analyze in detail the Battle of Tokyo Bay.
The main point of the battle of Tokyo bay was to find any Japanese boats and destroy them. There were a total of 9 American ships that fired shots and sunk four cargo Japanese ships. There was a ship called DEHaven that is 337 foot long and it was the most destructive ship there was. Since there was a lot of smoke from the explosions it was hard to see and it made it hard for the Japanese soldiers to see where the fired shots were coming from. The battle had lasted 10 days and the Americans had succeeded.
    4. Why did World War II end with the surrender of Japan?
Japan had surrendered because there navy and air forced had been damaged too much and they had no back up from other countries. With all the explosions, raids, and naval blockade on Japan they were pretty much trapped and was left with no choice but to surrender. The Japan nation was left devastated and destroyed, hundreds of thousands of Japan had died and the economy got worse. Japan got to the point to where they couldn't fight back.

    ReplyDelete
  7. 5. Describe the fall of imperial Japan?
The fall of imperial Japan was the end of war for them. The allied forces and Russia all had declared war on Japan and Japan had no protection from other countries like Germany because they were already captured. Japan was being bombed by the United States left and right and so many people died because of these bombings. Some major Japanese cities such as Okinawa, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Manchuria were all captured leaving Japan in a tough spot. Since the Japanese army and navy were basically destroyed and Japan was being bombed so much they finally decided to give up and surrender.
    6. Evaluate the importance of naval warfare in WWII. Three specific battles must be discussed in detail.
Naval warfare played a major role in World War 2 and it affected plenty of countries. One example would the attack of Pearl Harbor and how the Japanese attacked it. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor killing about 2,400 Americans and this was a quick attack that led to a huge conflict. Since the Japanese attacked them the Americans decided it was time to go to war with them. The battle of midway was also a huge battle between the Japanese and Americans. Many Japanese ships were sunk about and Americas had overpowered them in this battle forcing the Japanese to back off from the area. This battle had boosted the United States confidence and showed that America is more powerful than Japan. Another major battle was the battle of Okinawa where 100,000 Japanese soldiers died and about 7,000 American soldiers were killed. Many planes and warships were destroyed and eventually America ended up winning. As you can see naval warfare was a big part of World War 2.
    7. Compare and contrast the methods used to achieve victory during WWII on land and at sea.
On the land airplanes were used as a way of battling in the air and also explosives were equipped with these planes as a method to bomb places and targets. Tanks, machine guns, and other type of guns were also used on land to take out targets. On sea submarines were used as a way of fighting and detecting boats. The submarines had made it easier to destroy boats and it was a smart technique. Warships had also been used at sea as well as mines to make fighting easier and it was an effective method to use against enemies.

    1. I think you did good in your blog but I was reading number six, when it was talking about discuss three battles. I seen you put Pearl Habour, but that wasn't really a battle but more of an attack, the United States didn't know what was going on. So to me should take that out and find a new battle

      Delete
    2. I believe you did a good job on your blog also. We have similar perspectives when it came to these battles in the pacific. But this is coming from my perspective on question 7, don't you think airplanes were used as a method/tactic for both land and sea? But other than that little question I had, great job!

      Delete
  8. 1. Describe in detail the air raids in Japan.
    - From what I have researched, it seems as if the air raids in Japan were also known as something called “the fire raids”. These bombings were lead by LeMay and his air force B-29. LeMay called for blanket bombings on the cities of Japan so that he could undermine (to damage or weaken) the morals of the people. He probably thought this would be a good idea so the civilians wouldn’t try and intervene in the war and help the Japanese in anyway. But the planes that held all these bombs were designed to actually carry a bomb up to 20,000 lb and for a distance of only 5000 miles. But after strategic bombing was found out to such a struggle because they got very little damage done and some planes shot out the sky, is when they decided to change the tactics to blanket bombings which proved to have much more of an impact than strategic bombing. But don’t let this fool you, aiming was still an occurring problem. Sometimes the planes flying at 30,000 feet experienced a jet stream that made it even more difficult to bomb the target. Even young Japanese males had enough courage to try and stand against the air forces.
    2. Compare and contrast the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Iwo Jima.
    - Well this was around the time where it was a turning point for the Japanese because the Americans began to take islands that surrounded Japan. But they needed Okinawa and Iwo Jima in order to actually invade Japan because those islands were crucial. They were both crucial because they were south of Japan and close to the major military and political targets and it was said that the capture of these islands could even bring Tokyo down.
-The Battle of Iwo Jima was not an easy task. To capture this island it took about a whole month (February 19 until the end of March), only because when they were in battle, it was said that they moved only 1000 yards in four days. They tried bombing the Japanese forces deeper into the forest of the volcanic mountain, but they were protected from concrete covering and went on with relentless gunfire. The Japanese were given orders not to commit suicide banzai (this form of suicide for the Japanese meant that you kept your honor) but were ordered to take bullet fire. A lot of American lives were lost (somewhere around 7000) and a lot were injured (near 18,000). But this wasn’t even as close to bad as the Japanese who had 200 soldiers out of 21,000 remaining (the 200 remaining Japanese soldiers were captured and taken as prisoners).
-The Battle of Okinawa was way more of a Challenge to the Americans than the Battle of Iwo Jima was. This Battle was more of a challenge because the island was closer to the southern area of Japan where the military was (which meant they were closer to Japanese air forces) where the Americans air forces were in the Philippines, which were further away. So they had to use Carrier vessels, which were vulnerable to attack by Japanese forces. The Japanese had three times the forces on Okinawa than they did on Iwo Jima, which would make it harder to take over. They attacked the island in different areas at once. Forces were brought in from the south and marines were brought in through the north. The northern part of Okinawa wasn’t much resistance to the marines but it was proven to be tougher down south. The Japanese formed three lines where they took defensive position and it seemed to work a little. The Americans broke the first line and the second one seemed a bit tougher. But then they switched to offensive attacks, which didn’t work and were repelled back into defensive formation and then they broke through both remaining lines. At the end, 12,000 Allied numbers were claimed dead and 38,000 were claimed wounded. Where as the Japanese had lost 100,000 men plus the island critical to their defense, so war was practically over for them at this point.
    - So both battles were hard on the Americans but Okinawa seemed to be more difficult. When these islands were taken, it seemed as if this was a sign that war was over for the Japanese.

    ReplyDelete
  9. 3. Analyze in detail the Battle of Tokyo Bay.
    - Well from what I read, this was an easy attack on Tokyo Bay. They was a bit worried at first about all the mines in the water, the heavy forces waiting and the vessels and submarines. But from the reading I found, they arrived at the Bay and had relentless fire onto the shore of the Bay and launched two torpedoes from every destroyer (it says a total of 18). There was no resistance for some reason, none from planes, submarines, destroyers but then people on shore started firing because they had confirmed hits on the vessels and destroyers, which you can see that was on fire. The Allied forces quickly escaped and made it successfully away without the loss of a single man or destroyer.
    4. Why did World War 2 end with the surrender of Japan?
    - The war basically ended with the surrender of Japanese because Germany had already surrendered before they did and all the Allies really had to do was work on getting the Japanese to surrender which shouldn’t have been that much of a challenge. But it did prove to seem a little bit difficult. I say this only because when they tried to take over the Japanese territories they lost a large amount of men in the process. But the main reason they surrendered is because the Americans dropped two atomic bombs on Japan, which did a large amount of damage to the Japanese and a result of them surrendering. But all in all, they surrendered because they took a heavy amount of attacks from the Allied powers and both atomic bombs, which was a devastating blow to Japan, which in my opinion, had no choice but to surrender.
    5. Describe the fall of imperial Japan.
    - Well to put it in quick terms, Germany had surrendered and the Allies all put their focus on getting Japan to surrender. They did a lot of raids and began to take over territories that belonged to the Japanese, which I guess began to limit the Japanese resources. But they started closing in on Japan and also the USSR had joined in on the fight and started attacking the Japanese also, so practically the Japanese were taking hits from everyone it seemed like. Then the two atomic bombs that hit Japanese ended the war and caused them to surrender.

  10. 6. Evaluate the importance of naval warfare in WW2. Three specific battles must be discussed in detail.
    - Naval warfare had a huge significance in WW2. They went from carrying aircrafts for helping to bomb islands and cities to attacking enemy vessels. They were good resource for giving equipment to marines in battles and dropping marines off to help in a battle. One battle with naval warfare is the battle of Okinawa. Even though this battle wasn’t fought on the seas or over water, it did show an example of how naval warfare was important to the success of some fights. For example, they were fighting and a Japanese ship was coming to help and the commander didn’t bring fuel to fill the ship back up because he felt as if he didn’t need to. But American aircrafts tried stopping them and ended up succeeding. So you can see how in naval warfare, ships were used to bring re-enforcements or have covering fire. Another battle is the battle of Coral Sea where the Japanese fought with only aircrafts and won. This led to the attack on Port Moresby where if the Japanese had another attack on Australia it would leave them vulnerable, which the Americans viewed as high priority. They had intercepted and broken down a code that let them know when they were planning to attack. The Americans had few ships prepared to fight because other vessels were getting repaired and others were still in battle somewhere else. So this battle can show you that naval warfare was used to protect places or things when it came to battle. The battle of the Philippine sea is the last battle I am going to give an example of in naval warfare. In this battle it shows you how naval warfare is crucial to defense for the Japanese. This battle was known as the last great carrier battle also because this was the battle the Americans gave it their all an attacked the heart of the Japanese defense. This battle also shows how naval warfare was used to wipe out countries fighting in the war by taking out all their defense.
    7. Compare and contrast the methods used to achieve victory during WW2 on land and at sea.
    - All throughout the war, there were many methods used in achieving victory either on land or at sea. A method at sea Americans soon picked up (originally from the Germans) involved the usage of submarines. The method/tactic was known as “wolf-pack”. This is when a large group of submarines made coordinated attacks on shipping convoys. This was a successful method against the Japanese. Another method for the sea were ways they developed getting equipment or marines to heavily secured islands or areas. A method used on land was the usage of tanks. They had a different role in ww2 than they had in ww1. In ww2 they were used for offensive attacks instead of protecting the advancement of soldiers and breaking stalemate in trench warfare. Another method/tactic used on land was the better small arms and artillery they got. Weapons were improved and you didn’t really need a lever or anything similar to that affect in order to reload the gun. But something funny I noticed was how air forces were both needed and used in land and sea methods. Sometimes used for offense, sometimes used for defense. It’s just something I picked up when I was doing my research.

    1. Describe in detail the air raids in Japan?
Many allied forces did air raids on Japan during world war 2. They caused massive damage to the cities. The air raids killed about 241,000 to 900,000 people. Most of the air raids were conducted In the Doolittle raid in April 1942. They also did smaller raids in the Kuril Islands. Sometimes they wasn't just air raids in the air they also had medium bombers, to torpedo attacks on ships.
    2. Compare and contrast the battle of Okinawa and the battle of Iwo Jima?
The battle of Iwo Jima and the battle of Okinawa were both battles fought in the pacific. They were also battles fought with soldiers and not on airplanes. The differences are in the battle of Iwo Jima more American soldiers were killed or wounded than the Japanese. The battle of Okinawa took place in Okinawa because they wanted to take the battle away from the mainland Japan. The Japanese surrendered after America had sent two atomic bombs to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
    3. Analyze in detail the battle of tokyo bay?
The battle if tokyo bay was also known as the battle of sagami bay. Squadron 61 engaged in battle with the Japanese Convoy consisting of two freighters escorted by sub chaser number 42. The Americans sank their freighter. The United States had nine destroyers and the Japanese had one minesweeper, one submarine chaser, and two freighter. Japan thought they could outsmart America but America had way more fire power than they did.
    4. Why did world war 2 end with the surrender of Japan?
On August 6, 1945, United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Also they violated the pact they had with the Soviet Union. So they declared war on Japan and invaded manchukuo. While this was happening America was planning to send another atomic bomb to the city of Nagasaki and they did. So Japan had too many things happening at once. So foreign minister Mamoru Shigemitsu signed the Japanese instrument of surrender.

  12. 5. describe the fall of imperial Japan?
The fall of imperial Japan happened because America sent two atomic bombs to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That really hurt them because that was in Japan which was their homeland. They are also at war with the Soviet Union and didn't want to keep losing soldiers because they had already lost a big amount.
    6. Evaluate the importance of naval warfare in world war 2. Three specific battles must be discussed in detail.
The battle of tokyo bay was a battle that the allied forces had with naval ships as an advantage because the United States had 9 destroyers and Japan only had 4 ships and that's how the United States beat them in pacific. The battle of midway because the Japanese were losing resources and supplies and many soldiers were being killed. The last battle was in the coral sea. They lost this because aircrafts flew over them and was attacking them from above.
    7. Compare and contrast the methods used to achieve victory during world war 2 on land and at sea?
The similar things that happened that achieve victory was many battles at sea because Japan didn't have an advantage against the U.S in the sea because the U.S had more ships than they did. The only advantage Japan had was the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The succeed with this because it was a surprised attack on the U.S and they couldn't fight back. On land Japan almost won a battle and that was the battle of Iwo Jima many Americans officers were killed and wounded and many Japanese soldiers were not.

    1. Describe in detail the air raids in Japan.
    - Air raids destroyed a lot of Japan’s cities. The air raids made a big impact in Japan. Air raids abolished one fourth of the country’s housing, killed about 187,000 civilians, injured about 214,000, and made about nine million people lose their house. B-29 bombers weighed 60 tons and released napalm and firebombs on Japan.
    2. Compare and contrast the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Iwo Jima.
    - The Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Iwo Jima both took place in 1945. The abduction of these two islands was a three-point plan made by Americans so that they can win the war in the Far East. In the Battle of Okinawa, Japan lost 107,000 men that were killed and 7,400 men that were taken to prison. Japan also lost 4,000 aircrafts and 16 of their ships sunk. In the other hand, 5,000 Americans were killed and 4,600 were wounded. Also, 763 Americans aircrafts were destroyed, 36 ships were lost, and 368 ships were damaged. In the Battle of Iwo Jima, it took American more than one month to capture it. The Marines lost 6,891 men that were killed and 18,070 men that were wounded. Only 212 Japanese soldiers were taken to prison out of the 22,000 soldiers.
    3. Analyze in detail the Battle of Tokyo Bay.
    - On July 22, 1945, Destroyer Squadron 9 and the USS Dettaven decided to go to Tokyo Bay to destroy the ships. When the nine abolishers were getting to the bay, they noticed six Japanese ships. The nine abolishers fired tow torpedoes that sinked all four cargo ships. Japan surrendered in this battle.
    4. Why did World War Two end with the surrender of Japan?
    - Japan surrendered due to the destroyment of their navy and air force. Also, the bombings of Japanese cities and the Allied naval blockade left their economy and their country destroyed. Other than the battles mentioned above, a U.S. B-29 bomber known as Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. This bomb killed about 80,000 people and wounded thousands of people. An atomic bomb was also dropped in Nagasaki. After all of these battles and attacks occurred, Japan decided to surrender.

  15. 5. Describe the fall of imperial Japan.
    - When Germany surrendered in May 1945, the Allies decided to focus on Japan. B-29 bombers that included attacks such as: incendiary bombs, explosives, and atomic bombs that were used on Japan. The Island Okinawa was captured in June. The Soviet Union declared war on Japan, invaded Manchuria and defeated Japan’s Kwantung Army. Six days after Nagasaki was bombed, Japan decided to surrender on August 15, 1945.
    6. Evaluate the importance of naval warfare in WWII. Three specific battles must be discussed in detail.
    - Naval warfare was important in World War Two because there were many battles and attacks during ww2 that were made in the sea in order to achieve a goal. The Naval Battle of Guadalcanal occurred on November 12 - November 15,1942. This battle took place in the waters in the area of the Solomon Islands. In order to strengthen the troops on Guadalcanal, Japan dismissed forces to the area and fought in two night battles. The Allies won both battles of Guadalcanal. The Battle of Cape Esperance occurred on October 11 - October 12, 1942. This battle took place in the waters around Guadalcanal. This battle was the third biggest naval action of the Guadalcanal Campaign. Americans sank a Japanese cruiser and three Japanese destroyers. The Battle of Savo Island occurred on August 8 - August 9, 1942. In this battle, Japanese ships operated a night engagement against Allied vessels. The Allies were defeated and lost four heavily cruisers.
    7. Compare and contrast the methods used to achieve victory during WWII on land and at sea.
    - The methods used to achieve victory during ww2 on land and at sea were aircrafts, explosives, and bombings. Bombs, aircrafts, and explosives were used to destroy the countries they were fighting against. At sea, methods they used were fleets, submarines, cruisers, and etc. These methods were used in order to destroy each other.

  17. 1. Describe in detail the air raids in Japan.

Air raids are attacks but its called air raid because the countries are dropping bombs from aircraft into the country they are attacking. A country using air raids as one of their strategies was very strategic because if they just throw 5 bombs into the country they want to attack then their whole economy will be destroyed leaving them an easy target.

DOOLITTLE RAID aka Tokyo Raid: This raid happened on April 18, 1942. The Doolittle Raid was “an air raid by the United States on the Japanese capital Tokyo.” This was the first raid in Japan in revenge for the attack on the Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The raid was planned by Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle. 16 “B-25B Mitchell medium bombers” were launched without any being there to control them bombings. The plan was to send 16 bombs to bomb japan and china. Only 15 of the bombs were successful but 1 landed in the Soviet Union. Japanese military captured 8 U.S crewmen and tortured and killed 3 of them. During the search for the crewmen the Japanese killed 250,000 Chinese civilians. As a result, the Doolittle Raid didn’t cause much damage to Japan but it did show that the Americans will not back down and be bullied, they will defend their country.

THE FIRE RAIDS ON JAPAN: The fire raids on Japan started in 1945 and was ordered General Curtis LeMay. LeMay believed that “blanket bombing raids on cities to undermine the morale of civilians were an appropriate response” to get back at Japan for bombing the Pearl Harbor. In January 1945 LeMay flew to the Marianas where the B-29 bomb, 20,000 lb. and could travel 5000 miles and had guns and 1 cannon, were and took control. By March 1945 he had more than 30 B-29’s counted for to bomb Japan. However, Japanese people were risky enough to defend their country and tried to prevent the bombs from running Japan. By doing so they very successful because they used their George and Jack fighters leaving the U.S with fewer crewmembers and they stopped the bombs.

  18. 2. Compare and contrast the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Iwo Jima.

BATTLE OF OKINAWA: This battle started in April 1945. This was one of the bloodiest battles. However, it was known to be one of the major battles of WW2. The Americans wanted to get revenge from Japan for the attack on the Pearl Harbor therefore causing the Americans to attack the remains of Japan, Okinawa. On April 4th U.S troops ran into the Machinato line and this resulted U.S troops from not getting into the south part of Okinawa. They also ran into the Shuri line which resulted 21 warships to sink and damage of 66 other warships. However, the Americans made it through these hold ups and declared Okinawa theirs.

BATTLE OF IWO JIMA: This battle started in February 1945. The Americans wanted to capture Iwo Jima because they wanted to stop any trading from South East Asia so they can suffer. They also wanted to capture Iwo Jima because “there were two airfields on the island.” With this Japan could use these aircrafts to defend themselves when the U.S troops would try to attack them and if the Americans got a hold of this they could of be used as “emergency landing bases for damaged airplanes in the bombing raids.” Lieutenant General Kuribayashi knew Japan couldn’t afford to lose Iwo Jima so he tired his hardest to get soldiers to defend their city. Japanese people noticed that the American bombs had yet to be effective so they took the opportunity to plant snipers to kill the Americans. However, the Americans were too advance for the Japanese troops and declared Iwo Jima theirs.

Some of the similarities that I found between these two battles are: Okinawa and Iwo Jima were part of a “3 point the Americans had for winning the war in the Far East”, both of these battles happened in the 1900s, America declared both Okinawa and Iwo Jima theirs, America had the best bombs in both battles. Some of the differences I noticed between these two battles are: in the battle of Okinawa used more bombs and weapons because Okinawa was a much bigger city compared to Iwo Jima, Japanese people cared more about Iwo Jima because it had 2 airfields.

    3. Analyze in detail the Battle of Tokyo Bay.

BATTLE OF TOKYO BAY: This lead too many events. One being United States attacking Okinawa and declaring it theirs another being japan being in the process of surrendering. This battle was between japan and the United States. The United States had won this battle. The United States had destroyed Tokyo bay and once again their economy was destroyed.

    4. Why did World War 2 end with the surrender of japan?

The countries involved in World War 2 (towards the end) were japan, United States and the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union and the United States didn’t have any problems against each other it was them against japan. Japan surrendered on September 2, 1945. They surrender because the United States had nearly destroyed most of japan and Japanese people didn’t want japan to be fully gone. Japan surrendered right after America threw an atomic bomb in both Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Many Japanese people died and their economy was just horrible. When japan surrendered United States felt that war wasn’t necessary because they only entered World War 2 because of japan.

  20. 5. Describe the fall of imperial japan.

One of the reasons why Japan failed to gain more power was because they were allies with Germany and Germany itself had so much power that if Japan would have still been allies with Germany then they would have a lot of power as well. Another reason why japan failed to gain more power was because japan and Germany were the countries that were “the bad guys” and now that Germany had surrendered all of the focus was to japan and trying to take them down. This was the reason why United States brought in all of these high explosives to destroy japan and stop them once and for all.

    6. Evaluate the importance of naval warfare in World War II. Discuss in detail three specific battles that used naval warfare.

Naval warfare is basically having battles in oceans, seas or any other bodies of water. The sea/ oceans were used for trading not for fighting. However this was changed dramatically; from just doing a little trading for food to throwing bombs in cities. In my opinion I think naval warfare was the best way of fighting because it is way easier than going on land and having to stand in lines taking turns shooting people. For naval warfare all you have to do is shoot some bombs and most of the city is destroyed.

BATTLE OF LATAKIA: this battle happened in October 7, 1973. This battle was between Israel and Syria. In this battle the type of boats that they used were missile boat. They also used electronic deception. Israeli used 5 missile boats. They headed to the shore of Latakia and sink one of Syrian’s boats but using cannon fire. They also sunk another one of Syrian’s boats by using missiles. All in all Israel sunk all of Syria boats and won the battle.

BATTLE OF BALTIM: this battle happened in October 8-9 1973. This battle was between Israeli and Egypt. This battle lasted only for 40 minutes. They both used missile boats. Israeli and Egypt were going back and forth shooting bombs at each other. However, some of the bombs didn’t really make any damages due to aiming or the bomb wasn’t working properly. Until, one bomb was shoot from Israeli that hit Egypt’s boats and it busted the boats pies causing them to sink. When the commander of Egypt’s navy force notice they were going down they withdraw from the battle.

BATTLE OF PARACEL ISLANDS: This battle happened in January 19, 1974. It was between China and South Vietnam. The cause of this battle was that Vietnam “expel Chinese fishing vessels from the vicinity of some of the paracels.” The result of this battle was that the Paracel Islands were under China’s control. At first Vietnam was wining this battle because they were the ones who shot the first fire and causing a few damage to the Chinese warship. When Vietnam had to reload China had yet to throw any bombs so when they did they sunk all of the Vietnamese warships. The next day Chinese got aircraft and blew up 3 islands. Leading Vietnamese to surrender and China gaining control over the Paracel Islands.

  21. 7. Compare and contrast the methods used to achieve victory during World War 2 on land and at sea.

I feel that there aren’t any similarities between the methods used to achieve victory during world war 2 on land and at sea because land and sea are just two very different places to be using the same methods. However, there are many differences between the methods used to achieve victory during World War 2 on land and at sea. For example, at sea navy forces would use submarines to attack the opposing navy. They also used warship boat that were really useful. On land navy forces used tanks, airplanes to drop bombs in cities and machine guns.

  23. ESSAY
    1. Describe in detail the air raids in Japan.
Air raids in Japan mostly were directed towards attacking the capital Tokyo and Nagoya, a famous raid being the Doolittle Raids. The airplanes used to deploy the bombs in these raids were bombers from the B series (B-25, B-27). The main problem with these raids was that the technology available left bombs at the mercy of winds and other influences from physics; this meant that the accuracy of the bombings was absolutely dismal, with very few bombs actually hitting targets. The bombs used in future raids were no longer simple explosives but incendiary cluster bombs, these were used on the raid on Tokyo and destroyed 16 square miles of the city, sixteen factories within that space, around 100,000 civilians dead and an estimated of the same number injured. (Historylearningsite)
    2. Compare and contrast the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Iwo Jima.
Both battles were US seizure battles, their purpose was to take the islands. Both battlefields were Pacific islands. Both Battles had enormous Japanese casualties (about 100,000 in Okinawa and 21,000 in Iwo Jima) and involved determined and persistent defense from the Japanese army. Perhaps the main difference is that the death toll was higher in Okinawa than in Iwo Jima. Also, apparently Okinawa was of more strategic value than Iwo Jima.
    3. Analyze in detail the Battle of Tokyo Bay.
In this battle, the American navy was ordered to remain near the Tokyo Bay area and destroy any Japanese ships that came out of the bay. Amongst the ships in this battle was the USS DeHaven, which gained historical fame by accompanying the USS Missouri during the Japanese surrender ceremony.
On a curious note, on the way to Tokyo Bay, a typhoon struck the fleet in which the USS DeHaven was travelling.
    4. Why did World War II end with the surrender of Japan?
Japan had no choice but to surrender because their once powerful allies, Germany and Italy were crushed in Europe and therefore lost all support from them. Moreover, Japan had lost a vast amount of soldiers, ships, planes, and territory during the Pacific wars and was too weak to continue the war.
    5. Describe the fall of imperial Japan?
Japan was once a great imperial power, conquering territories around Asia thanks to their legendary military discipline, technology and strategy (and giant robots although they won’t admit it). They had some of the most powerful allies: Germany and Italy (Well, not Italy really, they were powerful only by association, like that kid who is only respected by being the huge bully’s friend). But these achievements were torn down by war with the United States (and Russia in the Asian mainland). Japan did not have the resources the US had to fight the war nor the technology the US had so they began crumbling down until they had no choice but surrender.

  24. 6. Evaluate the importance of naval warfare in WWII. Three specific battles must be discussed in detail.
Naval Warfare was very important in WWII, just about as much as aerial and land warfare. The obscure Three Specific Battles were fought, as the name implies, in three separate stages: sea, air and land. The general location of these three battles was around the modern-day Palau islands. In the first battle, the Japanese defensive belt encountered the scouting ships of the American fleet, these ships lured the Japanese into the main force of the American fleet. In the sea stage of this battle, the Japanese took heavy damage from the unexpectedly powerful American navy. The Japanese retreated and sent the warning to the islands and ordered the launch of the Japanese planes stationed there. Thus began the second specific battle, the American carriers deployed their squads to keep the Japanese busy while the troop carriers sailed towards the island. During the air stage of this battle, a fierce dogfight between around 70 Japanese planes and 64 American planes ensued. The American forces proved a challenge for both the attacking airforce as well as the retreating navy. The retreating Japanese fleet took even more damage from aerial attacks during this stage. The final of the three specific battles happened when US Marines disembarked into the island, being met with strong defenses and bunkers. This was the longest of the three battles, it lasted about 8 days. Finally, the American forces captured the Palau islands and the two airfields these contained. Besides the airfields, they also discovered an experimental Japanese submarine nicknamed “Z’GOK” with the peculiar features of being amphibious with bipedal movement in land, and possessing claws to tear ship hulls underwater.
    7. Compare and contrast the methods used to achieve victory during WWII on land and at sea.
The common feature between sea and land methods was that they often involved air support for the “main” forces (either ships or men/tanks). I feel the difference is that land strategies were often quicker and had more room for maneuvering and emergency detours/escape whereas ships were slower and more vulnerable if something went wrong.

    1. Describe in detail the air raids in Japan.
The air raids that happened in Japan were occurred in Tokyo. Japan used so many bombs during the air raids, they dropped over 250,000 bombs, which one of those bombs that was being drop was the B-29 Bomber and there was another bomb that weighed 60 tons, that is a lot of explosions for all these many and heavy bombs that Japan dropped. The U.S. had a strategy at first of air raiding Japanese military bases, but the U.S. thought about the strategy and changed their mind and went to another strategy to bomb Japan’s whole mainland. The air raiding that the U.S. did on Japan was mostly at night time because they knew that it will be hard for Japan to defend themselves in the dark where they would not be able to see what the U.S. is dropping. The U.S. was trying to do was destroy Japan’s cities. The main known city in Japan that the U.S. attacked was at Tokyo and Nagoya. The air raids killed over 300,000 lives, which were mostly soldiers and civilians.

    2. Compare and contrast the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Iwo Jima.
In April 1945, the Battle of Okinawa was happening and the battle was a plan that the U.S. made for them to take over the land. It was one of the three lands that the U.S. had in plan to take over in Japan. Okinawa was large in the Ryukyus Islands and this battle with the U.S. was considered as an important battle that used naval forces in WW2. Trying to take over Okinawa was no easy task for the U.S. because the island was really big to try to conquer. Okinawa had 60,000 Japanese troops with more than 3 airfields. Another problem that the U.S. had on getting the island was that they were not able to get enough information on Okinawa, which if they had more information about the island, it would have been easier for the U.S. to get Okinawa. Then next thing you know, the U.S. found out that in Okinawa it had over than 100 thousand Japanese troops and 400 thousand civilians. Okinawa was commanded by Lieutenant Ushijima and he made all the orders that would have kept everything in Okinawa under control. Then on April 1, 1945, the U.S. had their 250 warships and more than 1000 ships to Okinawa. By the end of the battle in Okinawa, the U.S. had lost over than 7 thousand soldiers and the Japanese lost over 100 thousand men and 7 thousand of their men were taken as prisoners. The U.S won the battle even though they lost so many men; they were able to prove the Japanese military that they would not give up on a bloody battle that lasted a month.
The Battle of Iwo Jima was another battle that was no easy task for the U.S. the main reason the U.S. went to battle in Iwo Jima was because the U.S. knew that invading Iwo Jima would give the Allied Forces an advantage in WW2 because they would be able to destroy many of its enemy’s air and naval capacity. The Battle of Iwo Jima was kind of the same similar to the Battle of Okinawa because the U.S. did was use their naval forces like their ships to be able to get another Japan’s main islands. The U.S. won the battle with fewer soldiers was killed than the Battle in Okinawa and they were able to kill mostly all of the Japanese defenders in Iwo Jima.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 3. Analyze in detail the Battle of Tokyo Bay.
The Battle of Tokyo Bay was a way for the U.S. to try to eliminate any of the Japanese ships that was coming into their radar. The battle took place in the Pacific, and in the Pacific there was a ship that would attack many of the Japanese ships that was called the USS DeHaven, it was from the Destroyer Squadron 9. Tokyo Bay was no easy task for the U.S. because the U.S. knew that Tokyo Bay was being guarded from the air, to the seas and through the land, so the U.S. did was to sail the USS DeHaven its way to Missouri all the way to Tokyo. It was a good approach because it would not cause no damage to the U.S. it was also the first time that the U.S. used their vessels or submarines in the Tokyo Bay. After the battle, the U.S. was victorious and it was the first battle that Japan lost.

    4. Why did World War II end with the surrender of Japan?
In the summer of 1945, WW2 ended by the Japanese surrendered from the attack that the U.S. was putting on them. The U.S. dropped 2 atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which it made Japan to surrender with them being overpowered by the U.S. attacks. The attacks that the U.S. put on the Japanese was so much for Japan that the U.S. killed 75 thousand civilians and most of Japan’s main cities were being destroyed. The attacks affected a lot on Japan because with so many of their cities being destroyed, their economy was going into a downhill. On that time, Germany surrendered from the war and was no longer allies with Japan anymore. It affected Japan because they did not know what to do next to be able to get a comeback and they did not have any help from anyone, they were mostly by themselves. The two atomic bombs that the U.S. put on Japan made Hirohito to finally surrender himself from war and realized that Japan was weakening that they could not go any further on into the war. So with Germany and Japan surrendering from the war, it was official that the war was finally over.

    5. Describe the fall of imperial Japan?
The fall of Imperial Japan happened near the end of WW2 and it was mostly about Japan losing all of their power. Japan was not a respected country because what they mostly did as a nation was trying to invade or take over lands, causing war with other nations and other things that made many nations of not respecting them. Japan noticed that they were getting weak by each battle because they were losing many of the battles from the Allied Forces and was overpowered by them until they surrender. The war stopped when the U.S. dropped the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It made Japan realize that the war was over for them because they really do not know what to do next to stop the U.S. The surrendering of Japan was the end of WW2 and it was the fall of the Imperial Japan. The war was a disaster for Japan that they became a weak country in that time period and the U.S. was still a superior nation.

    6. Evaluate the importance of naval warfare in WW2. Three specific battles must be discussed in detail.
The naval warfare was very important and mostly used warfare in WW2. It was really important for both Europe and the Pacific of using the naval warfare; Allied Forces had a lot of advantage when they faced their enemies. One specific battle inn WW2 was the Battle of Coral Sea. It was when Japan lost to the Allied Forces by them losing so many ships when the Allied Forces used their aircrafts to do their attacks. Another battle was the Battle of Midway, Japan lost so many of their supplied sources and that was the main reason of Japan losing the battle that the Allied Forces took the victory. Last battle was the Battle of Cape Matapan, it was the Allied Forces had an advantage to be victorious in the Pacific and it was known for the naval battles between Royal Navy from Great Britain and the Italian fleets. The battle gave the Royal Navy to take control of the Mediterranean Sea. In the end of the battle, the Allied Forces was able to get the victory at the end of WW2 because of their advantage on using their naval warfare.

  27. 7. Compare and contrast the methods used to achieve victory during WW2 on land and at sea.
One method of achieving victory was using the naval mine, which it was used for protection by it destroying ships and submarines. Another method is demining that was used in land and it was also called the mine clearance. It was used for trying to get rid of the naval and land mines that were very useful of getting the victory in WW2. Last method that I research on that was useful in WW2 was the submarines and aircrafts. I think this method was very important during the war because it could drop bombs and it was an easy way to attack enemies then by attacking them by foot. The only thing I could make a contrast between the methods used in WW2 is by the way it was used and the different areas that these methods was put on use.

#1) Describe in details the air raid in Japan.
    - The air raids in Japan were very significant during the Second World War. It destroyed many cities in Japan, many people lost their homes, many died and a lot of the population got injured. A lot of the survivors claim that it was horrible. There were corpses everywhere and a lot of smoke that lasted for several days. It was even more sad that even after a whole month of the incident, the corpses were still on the ground.
#2) Compare and contrast the Battles of Okinawa and the Battle of Iwo Jima.
    - The Battle of Okinawa started in 1945. In this battle, the Americans wanted to destroy Japan’s merchant fleet. Many of the Kamikaze planes that attacked the American fleet were destroyed. But, those who survived caused a lot of damage on the Americans. The attack on Okinawa had an equal impact on both sides. The Americans lost around 7,000 men and around 30,000 were injured on land. At sea, around 5,000 were injured and 100,000 were killed. The Japanese lost around 20,000 men and around 7,000 men were sent to prison. Both sides lost a big amount of ships and aircrafts. The Battle of Iwo Jima started in 1945. The island had a great tactical importance. Japan and America both wanted to keep control of it. They each owned the aircrafts on the island. The battle demonstrated the Americans that the Japanese would defend their country to the fullest. The Battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima both occurred on islands, both were between Japan and America, both occurred in 1945 and both were a part of a three-point plan the Americans had for winning the war in the Far East. They differ in various things, they occurred on two different islands, different months ( Feb. and April) and during the Battle of Okinawa more men, ships and aircrafts were lost.
#3) Analyze in detail the Battle of Tokyo Bay.
    - The Battle of Tokyo Bay was a battle between Japan and America in 1945. In this battle, the United States vessels first reached in Tokyo Bay. During this battle, the Japanese surrendered. America won because they were confident of their victory. They knew that Japan would not cause a lot of damage due to their smaller number of men.
#4) Why did World War II ended with the surrender of Japan?
    - World War II ended with the surrender of Japan. By the summer of 1945, Japan was very weak. By the summer of 1945, Japan was very weak. Their armies (navy and air force) were completely destroyed. Basically, since Germany had been surrendered the Allies did not have any other important enemies. This ended the Second World War leaving Japan with huge economic problems, lrdd population and a very weak army.
#5) Describe the fall of imperial Japan.
    - A series of incidents caused the fall of imperial Japan. America attacked Japan with high explosives, incendiary bombs and atomic bombs. The effect this had on Japan was lost of men in the army and regular citizens. The Allies captured various Japanese islands such as Okinawa. In other words, Japan lost a lot of its territory and men, which left Japan very weak and with no options but to surrender.

  29. #6) Evaluate the importance of naval warfare in WWII. Three specific battles must be discussed in detail.
    - The importance of naval warfare in World War II is that many lives were lost at sea. Many attacks, invasions and battles during WWII occurred at sea. One of the battles that occurred at sea during WWII is the Battle of the Atlantic. This battle was a total nightmare for Great Britain. This was due to the fact that Nazi Germany had total control of the Atlantic. The Allies won this battle because they were able to destroy most of Germany’s U-boats. The second naval battle I’m going to discuss is the Battle of Crete. Germany invaded Crete in 1941. This battle was between the Allies and Germany. As a result, in the Allied navy around 4,000 men were killed, around 2,000 were injured and around 20,000 were wounded, around 20 were captured and around 400 aircraft were destroyed. It can be said that both sides lost. The last battle I’m going to discuss is the Battle of Vella Gulf. This battle occurred in the summer of 1943. America won this battle against Japan. The United States did not suffer a lot of damage since they attacked Japan. In other words, Japan was more prepared.
#7) Compare and contrast the methods used to achieve victory during WWII on land and at sea.
    - At sea, the methods used were submarines, fleets and cruisers, At land, mostly tanks, artillery weapons and small arms. Air crafts and atomic bombs would go in both categories. All these methods were obviously used to destroy their enemies.

1.Describe in detail the air raids in Japan.
Many of the air raids in Japan were conducted by the US in WW2. The Doolittle raid for example, was carried out in April 1942 and led by Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle. It was the first air raid the US launched on Japan and it is perhaps one of the most important air raid for it shows the vulnerability of the Japanese homelands against attacks by air.

    2. Compare and contrast the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Iwo Jima.
The Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Iwo Jima are both similar in the sense that capturing them was a part of a plan the Americans created in order to win the war in the Far East. Okinawa and Iwo Jima held great significance in the eyes of both the Japanese and Americans. Iwo Jima for example, could be used for great battle tactics despite its relatively small size. If used by the Americans, Iwo would become an emergency landing base for damaged airplanes. If used by the Japanese, Iwo Jima would be used by Japanese aircrafts to attack American airplanes on their way to Japan. This was the reason why Japan wanted to maintain its control over the island. Iwo Jima had been a difficult target to take and it took some time for the Americans to over throw Japanese forces. 6,891 of American Marines were killed while 18,070 wounded. 212 of the 22,000 Japanese soldiers were held captive. The Battle of Okinawa however, proved to be far more gruesome and savage but nevertheless was an important battle in WW2. Reasons for the Americans targeting Okinawa involved destroying the remains of Japan’s merchant fleets and using airstrips in the neighboring regions in order to launch bombing raids on the industrial mainland of Japan. The Americans estimated that approximately 65,000 Japanese troops were stationed on the island when in fact there were over 130,000 Japanese troops along with 450,000 civilians. It was clear that the Japanese were not going to give Okinawa up without a fight. The Japanese had hope that the Kamikazes would inflict enough damage on Americans that they would be forced to retreat. The Kamikazes were “members of a special corps in the Japanese air force charged with the suicidal mission of crashing an aircraft laden with explosives into an enemy target, especially a warship” (dictionary.com). Out of the 193 kamikazes launched, the Americans managed to 163 of them. The other 30 kamikazes inflicted a great deal of casualties on the American carrier fleet. If it weren’t for so many kamikazes being destroyed, the Japanese would have been able to inflict more damage on American troops. Despite Japan’s strong resistance, they eventually lost the battle of Okinawa to the Americans.

3.Analyze in detail the Battle of Tokyo Bay.
The Battle of Tokyo Bay was a fairly easy battle for the Allies. The allies for faces with little resistance and attacked any Japanese battleship in sight with torpedoes. The Japanese quickly surrendered to the allies.

4.Why did World War II end with the surrender of Japan?
Germany and Japan were the two greatest powerhouses of the Axis powers in World War 2. For quite some time these two nations proved to be the dominant forces throughout the war. It wasn’t until the tides changed and things started to be in the favor of the Allies that these two nations suffered from serious losses. Because they were running low on resources, Germany had no other choice but to surrender to the Allies. The US had earned Japan’s unconditional surrender after dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki that killed approximately 200,000 people in total which ended WW2.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 5.Describe the fall of imperial Japan?
The fall of imperial Japan was a long and tedious task on the Allies part. It took over 80 days for the Allied forces to conquer Okinawa which caused casualties of 150,000 on both sides and left many civilians dead. While the US carried out bomb raids, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan and invaded Manchuria which was occupied by the Japanese. With a force of one million soldiers, the Soviet Union quickly defeated the Japanese army stationed in Manchuria. Imperial Japan had officially fallen when it had surrendered in September 1945 due to the Americans dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

6.Evaluate the importance of naval warfare in WWII. Three specific battles must be discussed in detail.
Naval warfare was very important in WW2. One could easily sabotage an enemy’s food source and/or supplies by destroying an enemy ship and large ships were great for transporting aircrafts. The Battle of midway for example was a battle where the Americans triumphed over the Japanese because of the strength of their air force and navy. The battle of the Philippine Sea is another example of how crucial naval forces were to the war. Japan had a larger carrier force than America and therefore posed as a threat to her. Although this is not a battle, the sinking of Bismarck symbolizes how powerful naval ships could be. The Bismarck was Germany’s most prominent battle ship in WW2 and it managed to sink Great Britain’s HMS Hood before it was attacked by a fleet of British ships. The Bismarck weighed 50,000 ton and was covered in armor. The battleship had many weapons such as 8 x 15 inch guns, 12 x 5.9 inch guns, and an arado 96 aircraft. It was obvious that battleships such as the Bismarck were capable of inflicting massive damage.

7.Compare and contrast the methods used to achieve victory during WWII on land and at sea.
To win against an opponent at sea, a combination of aircrafts in battleships would lead you to victory. You could use your aircrafts to bomb your enemy’s ships or launch torpedoes to completely sink them. To win a victory on land, bombs and explosives would most likely be used. However, this method to me is very violent and gruesome because not only are you claiming the lives of soldiers but innocent civilians as well.

I really like your blog, it was understandable, there were some knew information that i learned from questions # 2 & 6, but on question #3 i have to disagree with you about the Battle of Tokyo Bay, on it being an easy battle for the Allies because in my research it says that the U.S. had trouble of getting through the Tokyo Bay with it being guarded from the air, to the seas, and through the land. Overall good blog. Keep up with the good work!!!

    1. Describe in detail the air raids in Japan.
Japan experienced air raids during WWII. Tokyo was firebombed on the night of March 9-10, 1945 and was so destructive that it not only hit Tokyo but also 64 other Japanese cities. Two of the cities that were hit were Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The air raids on Japan were known as the Great Tokyo Air Raid. These air raids destroyed neighborhoods in eastern Tokyo and killed 100,000 people. The people who carried out the bombs from the U.S. dropped 300,000 which were incendiary. Incendiary bombs cause fires so that all escape routes would be cut off. These bombs were delivered at night. B-29 bombers was used which weighed 60 tons. The U.S. wanted to continue bombing Japanese cities. They were planning to also bomb Nagoya, Osaka, and Kobe. The estimated amount of people who died was 300,000. The U.S. Decided to switch their strategy from bombing military targets on the Japanese mainland to setting destruction on Japanese cities.

    2. Compare and contrast the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Iwo Jima.
The biggest and most evident comparison between the. Battle of Okinawa and Iwo Jima is the amount of lives lost. As a result, both battles had a huge death toll. Over 250,000 people died in the Battle of Okinawa and 150,000 Okinawans died which was about a third of the population. A contrast is that the Battle of Okinawa was harder to execute than the Battle of Iwo Jima. The Battle of Okinawa was more of a challenge because Okinawa was beyond range of the American planes which were sent from the Philippines.

    3. Analyze in detail the Battle of Tokyo Bay.
The Battle of Tokyo Bay occurred on July 22,1945 at midnight. Destroyer Squadron 9 and USS DeHaven were ordered to go to Tokyo Bay to destroy any enemy ship that they stumbled upon. The sailors that were on this mission were aware that the waters were mined and that lands were guarded with guns on both sides. The nine destroyers picked up a radar which said there were six Japanese ships near Tokyo Bay and the Americans decided to head back.

    4. Why did World War II end with the surrender of Japan?
WWII ended with the surrender of Japan because they were finally weakened and defeated which was planned to be done. The navy and Air Force of the Japanese was destroyed and their economy was left devasted due to the bombings of Japanese cities. Also Okinawa was captured by the Americans so that they'd be able to launch an invasion of the Japanese main home islands.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 5. Describe the fall of imperial Japan?
The fall of imperial Japan was caused because of the allies. The allies made Germany surrender in May 1945. They put all of their attention on Japan after this. I think that the fal,of imperial Japan happened when Japanese cities were being bombed. The bombing of Japanese cities killed off a great amount of the Japanese population and also damaged their economy.

    6. Evaluate the importance of naval warfare in WWII. Three specific battles must be discussed in detail.
Naval warfare was very important in WWII. It allowed countries to attack enemies in the air and also on the ground. American navy and marine pilots were able to destroy 15,000 enemy aircraft and sink 174 Japanese warships which included 13 submarines (total weight of 746,000 tons). The Battle of the Philippine Sea involved naval warfare. During this battle 7 fleet carriers, 8 light carriers, 7 battleships, 79 other warships, and 28 submarines were used. In the Battle of Midway, Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto planned to destroy ships that remained of the US Pacific Fleet. In order for Yamamoto to execute this plan he had to invade the island of Midway which was 1,300 miles northwest of Hawaii. In the Battle of the Coral Sea, 2 fleet carriers, 1 light carrier, and 4 cruisers were used. In this battle, the Japanese wanted to get more control by taking over New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. The occupying of these two territories was also to draw the US Navy's carriers to battle so that the Japanese can destroy them.

    7. Compare and contrast the methods used to achieve victory during WWII on land and at sea.

Methods used to achieve victory during WWII on land was the use of airplanes. Countries were able to use airplanes to bomb territories from far away. For example, the bombings of the Japanese cities. At sea, battleships and carriers can be used to destroy the ships and submarines of other countries. The obvious contrast between these methods is that some methods are used on land and some at sea.

Nice blog, really like the way you answered #6 being very detailed of you putting the numbers of aircrafts, warships, submarines, fleet carriers and cruisers being used and being destroyed during the battles. On question #5, do you think it was right for the U.S. to bomb Japan's population with so much Japanese civilians being killed, do think there could have been another way for the U.S. to make Japan Surrender than killing innocent civilians??? Japan and The Pacific: WW2
    1. Describe in detail the air raids in Japan.
-- The air raids in Japan happened in March 1945, took place mainly in Tokyo. On March 9-10, the raids had destroyed 64 Japanese cities and atomic bombing drop to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The bombing had took away 100,000 Tokyo’s life. At night, the U.S. had dropped 300,000 bombs and one specific bomb called B-29 that weighed over 60 tons. The U.S. uses different strategies to bomb the country. First, bombed the Japanese military target but then changed their mind to bomb the mainland. Second, bombed Nagoya, next day Osaka and four days later is Kobe. The U.S. main forces was to bomb the cities at night. According to estimation, 300,000 lives had took away during the air raids.
    2. Compare and contrast the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Iwo Jima.
-- The Island of Okinawa and Iwo Jima is the 2 crucial island left from the invasion of Japan. The Battle of Okinawa started in April 1945 and ended in June 1945. This is a bloody battle and is a major battles during WW II. Okinawa was the largest island in the southern tip of Japan. The U.S. needed to control four of the airfields on the island and the problem is the America doesn’t had much information about Okinawa. According to the U.S. estimation, there are about 65,000 troops but in fact there are 130,000 troops with more than 450,000 civilians on the island. The island was under the order of Lieutenant Ushijima and the Lieutenant sent by the Americans was General Simon Bolivar Buckner. On April 1st, the U.S. approach on the island start the fight, the Japanese defense but the U.S. assault with 100 warships and 1000 normal ships. Lastly, the U.S. lost 7000 men and the Japanese lost 100,000 soldiers and 7000 take to prison. However at the end the U.S. won the war even though they lost a lot during the battle. The Battle of Iwo Jima started in February 19, 1945 and ended in March 26, 1945. The U.S. marines and ships arrive on the island and began to fire. There are also aircrafts attacked by dropping bombs to the island. But it didn’t hurt much because the Japanese had built a strong bunkers to protect themselves. The marines are start firing but it was difficult to get the Japanese out of the bunkers. So they used flamethrowers and grenades to against the bunkers. Aircrafts and marines offensive in the same time and gave the Japanese a fatal fight. Lastly, the American had lost 6,891 men and 18,070 injured. On the Japanese side, 212 taken to prison. Both of battle are bloody battle and the U.S. had won both of them.
    3. Analyze in detail the Battle of Tokyo Bay.
-- The Battle of Tokyo Bay was happened in the summer of 1945. Destroyer Squadron 9 sneak toward Tokyo Bay with the USS DeHaven, they giving the order to destroy any enemy ships they find. When they approach on the bay, radar found 6 Japanese ships outside the bay. The U.S. commanders make up their decision by wait outside and when they head back they can capture the ships that are left. They found four Japanese cargo ships and 2 destroyers escorts close to the coastline, then the U.S. destroyers came up and fired the ships. The ground batteries on Oshima Island heard the explosions and began fired guns to the sky, because they are unable to determine where the sound came from. However none of the U.S. ships got hit. This is the first time any U.S. vessels entered to approach in Tokyo Bay during war. All they wanted was to damage the enemy.
    4. Why did World War II end with the surrender of Japan?
-- World War II ended with the surrender of Japan because after the fighting island across islands, Japan’s Navy and Air Force were all destroyed. Material production were taken over by American industry and the Japanese people were starving. Japanese leadership still refuse to surrender even though there is a full-scale invasion. In August, American bomber B-29 dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Few days later, Japanese surrender.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 5. Describe the fall of imperial Japan?
-- After the surrender of Germany in May 1945, the Allied turn their attention over on Japan. The U.S. brought B-29 bombers in to carry out massive attacks that involved high explosive, incendiary bombs and the newly invented atomic bombs. In June, the Island of Okinawa was capture. But both sides had more than 150,000 casualties and ten thousands civilians dead. Next, the Soviet Union claim to had war with Japan, they invaded Manchuria and defeated the Japanese Kwantung Army. Six days later, Nagasaki got bombed. Lastly, Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945.

    6. Evaluate the importance of naval warfare in WWII. Three specific battles must be discussed in detail.
-- There are lots of naval warfare happened in WWII but most of them occurred at sea. #1) The Battle of Guadalcanal took place in the Solomon Island. The first offensive made against Japan but the Allies won the battle. Also the U.S.approach, surprise attack to the Japanese and took control of the air base under construction. #2) The Battle of Leyte Gulf also known as the Second Battle of the Philippine Sea. It occurred in October 23-26 1944 and took place in the water near the Philippine Island of Leyte and Samar. American combined with the Australians go against the Japanese Imperial Navy. Lastly, the combined force of American and Australian won the battle. #3) The Battle of Midway happened in June 4-7 ,1942. The battle fought a month after the Battle of Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Coral Sea. This naval battle is about the American planes and ships defeated the Japanese fleet while they are on the way to invade the Midway Island. Japanese had sunk 17 out of 22 ships, 144 planes were destroyed and 5100 men died. On the American side, 66 planes lost and 543 men died. Lastly, the U.S. won.
    7. Compare and contrast the methods used to achieve victory during WWII on land and at sea.
-- The methods used to achieve victory during WWII on land and at sea are aircrafts and atomic bombs because they all offensive from the sky to bomb territories. Methods used on land are tanks, bombs and other small weapons. Methods used at sea are battleships, submarines, marines and cruisers. The methods used on land and at sea are different because what you can use at sea can not used on land. But some of the weapons you used on land can also used at sea.

    1. Describe in detail the air raids in japan.
The raid is Japan started in June 1944. The air raids in Japanhad allies forced on to them, it caused destruction to the country. There were a lot of killing everywhere it was about 241,000 to 900,000 people. They were also small-scale raids on the military positions.
    2. Compare and constrast the battle of okinawaw and the battle of iwo jima.
The battle of okinawa was fought on the Ryukyu islands of okinawa. The battle lasted 82 long days from early April-June 1945. The air operation had plans to invade Japan mainland. Japan lost 77,166 soldiers , some were killed and some committed suicide. The battle of iwo jima was from February 19 - March 26 1945, this was the major battle of which the U.S. fought for. They wanted to attack the Japanese main islands. The battle of iwo jima came before the battle of okinawa. But the battle of okinawa had way more serious challenges.
    3. Analyze in detail the battle of Tokyo Bay
The battle of Tokyo bay was the United States plan to destory Japans ships. The battle didnt do much damage they just wanted to take away Japans ships so from there Japan finally surrendered to the allies.
    4. Why did WW2 end with the surrender of Japan ?
World War 2 ended with the surrender of Japan because there were so many bombs being dropped and other countrys being attacked. Japan seen that as like a threat so on August 15 on the radio it had said that the Japan surrender to the Allies it seem to be that Japan wanted to keep there land since alot of countrys wanted to attack their mainlands.
    5. Describe the fall of Imperial Japan .
Well after Germany had surrender in May of 1945 the Allies had put all their forcus on Japan. The allies had came to the Japanese islands of okinawa and killed a lot of people. The main reason for the fall was because of the allies. Japan had lost a lot of people after the bombing that made their population go down and their economy was bad.
    6. Evaluate the importance of Naval warfare in WW2. Three specific battles must be discussed in detail.
The Naval warfare was very important in WW2. It was was very important because it was used for trading. The Naval warfare let countries attack each other without a problem. The Battle of Midway was the most important naval battles of WW2. Took place in June 4-7 1942 this let the US and allies to move on to an offensive postions. The Battle of Philippines took place too. What this battle did was eliminated the imperial japanese so that they can make a larger actions. The last battle was coral sea. This battle was fought during May 4-8 1942. It was the first actions of the aircrafts , it was the major naval battle in the pacific theater of WW2.
    7. Compare and constrast the methods used to achieve victory during WW2 on land and sea.
The methods to achieve victory during world war 2 on land and sea was the atomic boming and aircraft. On land they used bombs and other things. On sea they used battleships. But for both they can use weapons that were able to be put to use on land and sea.

    1) During World War 2 the allied forces directed so many air raids on Japan. This caused many deaths in Japan and very horrific destruction within the cities of Japan. At least 241,000-900,000 were killed. The first few years within the Pacific War those attacks had a limit towards the Doolittle Raid that had happened on April, 18, 1942. These were dangerous raids. They were bombing raids and they did not end until August, 15, 1945.
    2) The Battle of Okinawa took place at the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa. This battle begins from early April until mid-June in 1945. This battle lasted 82 days. The fight had started when the Allies forces wanted to use Okinawa as a base for their air operations. They invaded Japan. Many were killed; the allies’ forces used “Kamikaze Attacks” which they have learned from the Japanese Defenders. There were severe atomic bombings that took place in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. After those bombings it was the last straw for Japan because they surrendered. The Battle of Iwo Jima was a major significant battle because the United States force fought to capture the Island “Iwo Jima” away from the Japanese. This battle lasted 5 weeks. The U.S Marines ruled the base. Due to the distance between the U.S Base in Mariana Islands and mainland in Japan, the island that they had seized provided emergency landing strips for the “B-29s returning from bombing runs” These battles both started because they wanted to take over or own an Island.
    3) The Battle of Tokyo Bay was a huge battle. Japan Surrendering to the United States. They basically had to sign a document of them officially surrendering. The signing happened in the deck of USSR Boat. This happened about 3 weeks after the second Atomic bomb had been dropped. Japan did not want to suffer any more. The signing took place in Tokyo Bay in 1945. The Japanese had to have a white flag hanging from the muzzle of each of their shore guns in order to give the signal to the U.S.
    4) World War 2 ended with Japan Surrendering because Japan at this point was hope-less. They had no more courage to continue after the second bombing. Also they knew it was time for them to surrender because they didn’t have any diplomatic negotiations to offer. Amercia had got what they wanted so there was no reason to continue war. So that’s why World War 2 ended with Japans surrender.
    5) So the Fall of Imperial Japan was basically when Germany surrendered in May of 1945, Allies devotion was focused on Japan. The Islands strategy accepted by the U.S. Navy effectively brought B-29 bombers within range of Japan's Home Islands, and also they made gigantic attacks on Japan. Two most dominant weapons ever used in war: the newly-invented atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Many sympathy was created for Japan because this atomic bomb effected many of their Generations.
    6) There were many naval battles that had happen in the World War 2. But the importance of them was huge, for example like the Battle of Midway. This naval battle was considered as the Turing point because the Japanese had attacked on the United States pacific fleet. They completely destroyed Pearl Harbor. Many Innocent lives were taken away. That led to the United States declaring war on Japan and sending 2 very dangerous atomic bombs. Another example would be Battle of Coral Sea when Japan Seize control of the Coral Sea. They made bases in New Guinea. It was bad for the Japanese because many Japanese planes were lost that the Port Moresby invasion force, without acceptable air cover and harassed by Allied land-based bombers. The last example of the importance of naval battle of ww2 is the Battle of the Philippines Sea. Is because Bismarck’s had gotten sinked.

  38. 7) The way I can compare and contrast the methods that was used to achieve victory ww2 and land at sea was that they used a lot of explosives and dangerous weapon in both wars. Each war had many tactics used to fight through the wars. Also many of the armies were trained at high level.

    1. The air raids on Japan were conducted by the allies (U.S, Great Britain) ragged these attacks during WW2. The allies went directly towards the pacific sea and the islands that were under Japan’s control because they didn’t think that it was right for them to have these islands under their control whether they were with no reign or just came out to independent or free; they didn’t deserve to be under Japans control. The raids on Japan were all monitored by Special Forces which were mostly Americans. These forces were composed of, “The Firth Air Force, Seventh Air Force, Eleventh Air Force, Twelve Air Force, 3rd fleet and 5th fleet” the only contribution that Great Britain gave was the British Pacific Fleet.
    2. The battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima were both battles taken in place in these islands that were the last islands that were under the Japan reign. The similarities between these battles is that the islands were both under Japans control but were as intensive as each other when the battle raged against the American fleet and the Japanese. Now their differences besides that they were in different islands is that in the battle of Okinawa didn’t have as much impact as the battle of Iwo Jima. The battle of Iwo Jima was first which was more impacting because the U.S was determined and they didn’t want to hold back. The battle of Okinawa was strong as well but it was more that they were extremely ready for the battle.
    3. The Americans weren’t happy and still kept attacking. American troops launched an attack on Tokyo, the capital of Japan due to capturing most of the islands that were under its control and now taken by American troops; the Americans goal was to destroy Japan for not only hurting the country in the attack to pearl harbor but everything that they caused in WW2. As any other country which has a strong capital, that’s the core of strong information and persistence so the Allies took the islands and then went towards Tokyo.
    4. WW2 ended in the defeat of Japan for the simple fact that Japan had a Imperialistic Ego of not letting go of its power so it was taken down by the bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

  40. 5. Imperial Japan only felt really bad because after Germany surrendered in Europe, The attention that the allies had on Germany went towards Japan. The attack was sudden but as we all know this doesn’t end pretty because as we know Japan was ordered to surrender but because of its imperial stubbornness, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed.
    6. The importance of the naval warfare in WW2 was severely important. Three battles that I think about and could describe in detail in which the naval warfare participated which were the battles of Okinawa, Iwo Jima and Tokyo bay. The battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima were both conducted mostly by naval ships which were in full control of attacking the Japanese imperial navy and troops. Another war that was initiated by mostly naval troops from the United States it was the battle of Tokyo attack from the allies. These battles were around the 1950’s right after the surrender of the Nazi in Europe. These battles had a huge affect because sometime if it wasn’t for them, things in land would have been different.
    7. The Only similarities that I can say that were in the strategies used in land and sea were the aproachment of how the troops did their work. The only difference is that the land troops had a chance to back down but the Naval forces had to give it all of nothing.
