The reason why Alaska is known as the "forgotten war" because of the events that had occurred around this time period. The Aleutian Island campaign which you can also refer as the forgotten war was June 3,1942 through August 15,1943 and overlapping this event was the Guadalcanal campaign ; time period was August 7,1942 through February 9,1943. Both was dealing with Japan but in the Guadalcanal campaign felt like it was more intense than the Aleutian. For example in the Guadalcanal for the USA had 7,100 people that died,4 captured,29 ships were lost and up to 615 aircrafts lost. On Japan's side 31,000 Japanese died, 1,000 were captured, 38 ships were also lost and 683 to 880 aircrafts got either lost or destroyed. This campaign was more intense than the "forgotten war" also known as the Aleutian Island campaign didn't have compelling results as the Guadalcanal campaign. In the Aleutian campaign for the USA side had 1,481 killed, 225 aircrafts destroyed, 640 from the army went missing, 3,416 were wounded in this campaign and also 8 were captured. Japan had 4,350 that had died and 28 captured, but even it was an allied victory. Do I agree, that it should be called the forgotten war, no because of the people who lost their lifes in the world. Ever event thats happens should be remembered, not forgotton because on both sides people are risking their lifes to fight for a common goal. Also Americans thought if Japan obtained Alaska that they would send aerial assaults to the west coast. This should be remembered not forgotten because what of this would of had happen, the problems we would had endured. Even so their were a lot of Americans, there was African-Americans that served as well. Back in this time blacks were discriminated as well(don't know how many). Reason why Russia was involved because of the allied forces, she and the USA was a team. Lastly, the Alaska-Canadian highway was like a connection through Canada to get to Alaska, which was going through construction in the World War two.(completed in 1942)

World War II influenced Alaska in a significant ways, a gigantic and permanent increase towards the military. Critical development of Alaska's transportation framework; and war itself. Concern with Japan's developing quality in the late 1930s provoked the U.S. government to look to Alaska's defenses. The Japanese threat to Alaska and to its waterfront never turned into that pressing. The airfields served an extremely significant part, in shipping almost 8,000 contenders and assault planes from U.S. generation plants to be utilized by our Soviet Union associates against Nazi Germany. To backing the landing strips and to further connection the Alaskan station to whatever remains of the nation, the armed force punched a simple street, the Alcan Highway (now enhanced and called the Alaska Highway) through Canadian and Alaskan wild from northern Alberta to connection up to the Richardson Highway at Delta, Alaska. Throughout the same period a goad street (the present-day Glenn Highway) was constructed to connection Anchorage to the Alcan.Throughout the first week of June, 1942, Japanese airplane shelled Dutch Harbor and Japanese troops involved the islands of Attu and Kiska in Alaska's westernmost Aleutian Islands. This attack denoted the first run through since the War of 1812 that an attacking armed force had involved American soil. A little maritime gathering on Kiska and Aleut villagers on Attu were taken prisoner and transported to Japan. Worry that the war would come to other far western islands provoked the American government to empty inhabitants from the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands and to devastate a number of the islanders' homes, instead of let the invaders use them. The Battle of the Commander Islands in March 1943, in which naval force boats caught and turned back a Japanese flotilla trying to bring more reinforcements, implied accomplishment of the first goal. Kiska held 6,000 Japanese, so the American summon amassed a power of almost 100 boats and an invasion force of in excess of 34,000 American and Canadian troops. In late July the Japanese had dealt with a splendid break; while U.S. boats pursued complex radar contacts 200 miles south of the island, eight naval ships dashed to Kiska and diverted the head's troopers.Russia, is involved due to the fact that it was apart of the Allies, in which participated in World War II. I don’t agree in terms of the war been forgotten because it happened, and many people lost their lives and should be remembered. Many of the events that occur mark a point in our past history, and it should be a battle in which should be taught just like any other battle that has happened.

Why was Alaska knows as the forgotten war during WWII? Do you agree or disagree with it being called the forgotten war? Why? Explain.
When it comes to World War II, you would never imagine that Alaska was a part of the second World War to some extent. So i do disagree with is being called the forgotten war, its just not presented to the public like other countries that were affected by this war. Alaska was a very abandoned place, being very cold and with a very small amount of population, it all changed when the Nazis and Tojo’s force wanted to dominate the world by attacking certain nations and so on. Alaska did have an effect during the war in which the occupation of military forces started to increase also the transportation system increased as well. When the war started, the U.S. Forces started to build bases throughout north Canada and Japan threatened to make Alaska as their mainland. By 1941, there were over 30 thousand military troops and if you combine that with civilians and people who are working for the military, it makes up the total population at Alaska during the war at a total of a little more than 100 thousand people. The Soviet Union was going to help the U.S. with air forces to fight against the Nazis, bases throughout the North Canada, near Alaska. To make things easier for the U.S. a road from ‘North Alberta’ all the way to Richardson Highway located at Alaska in which the road went through Alaska and Canadian Wilderness and they called this the Alaskan Highway. Primarily the Highway was built by African Americans. There weren't much action going on at Alaska, but the Japanese wanted to take over certain island in the Alaska area. Alaska was also not the best area to war where as nations like Japan and U.S. were not used to fighting war in the cold, Alaska was to their least of interest in land.

Alaska was involved in World War 2 because America didn’t want the Japanese to take over Alaska. The closest way they could get to North America was through Alaska; Germany agreed to help Japan while Russia would help the U.S. The U.S decided to build naval air, submarine bases, and destroyers in Sitka, Kodiak, and Dutch harbor in order to prevent the Japan from gaining any territory. Alaska’s military population rose from about 1,000 soldiers to 35,000 and because of it the population also grew. In order to prevent coastal shipping the U.S had built airfields from Montana, north through Canada and also to Fairbanks. The Alaska Highway was then created which ran through Alaska and Canada; it was built to help support the airfield and it would be a much more efficient way of traveling. Given this information I disagree that this should be called the unforgotten war because I feel like if the Japanese and Nazis got control over Alaska then it could have been a turning point in World War 2. Also the war made Alaska a more civilized place by the increase of army and civilian population during the war. This just wasn’t any small war because a lot of people died and also it wasn’t just two countries going at it because Germany and Russia was also involved. If America and the Russia didn’t prevent Japan and the Germans from gaining some territory then who knows maybe world war two cold have lasted longer and the Nazi’s and Japanese could have gotten stronger.

Alaska was affected during WWII because of the clash between Germany/Japan and America. America wanted to look out for Alaska because Japan was becoming very strong and wanted to take over Alaska. Smart Americans realized that the smallest distance between the West Coast and Japan followed a route very close to Alaska. Because of this, Alaska’s army grew and many setup war bases such as submarine and naval air. The Alaska-Canadian Highway was built so America and Alaska could connect.African Americans helped to built this highway. Russia was willing to help American with soldiers to fight against Japan and Germany. I do not agree with Alaska being known as the forgotten war during WWII because it did have an effect on the world war. This was due to the fact Alaska had the easiest route to get to Japan and the West Coast, and Japan and America both wanted Alaska for their own benefit. Alaska’s army increased by very high amounts during the war and it became way stronger than it was before the war. In conclusion, I do not agree with Alaska being known as the forgotten war because it was important since Japan and America both wanted Alaska as part of their territory.

ReplyDeleteIt was June 6, 1942 when around 500,000 JAPANESE soldiers invaded Attu and Kiska. However, this took a while for the japanese to invade because of such horrible weather. When this happened the USA came to Alaska's aid and defended them. To ensure the Alaska would be able to get military installations the USA builded many airfields. The AFRICAN AMERICANS helped build the ALASKA-CANADIAN HIGHWAY. The reasons why this highway was build was to be able to protect Alaska and be able to "fault her link the Alaskan outpost to the rest of the country." This highway went through Canada to Alaska. Japan had a strong army. Alaska's army was build between Americans and RUSSIANS. Alaska was known as the forgotten war because it was to be thought that the Aleutians wasn't as important than the other troubles that was going on in the same time period as Alaska's problem. There wasn't really much attention paid to the Aleutians. Eventually, it was as if it never happened. Now, do I agree with it being called the forgotten war? No. No I do not! First of all, this war should have been paid attention to. Every war should be paid attention to. There are little wars that last a few days and it was not forgotten, this war lasted for quite a while and it was forgotten. On top of that, many people died. I feel that this war should be called the war of the Aleutians.

- Alaska was affected due to World War Two in many ways. The ways that Alaska was affected are: the expansion of her transportation, the war, and the massive increase in it’s military. The U.S. government decided to build destroyer, submarine, and naval air bases in Kodiak, Sitka, and Dutch Harbor. By September 1941, Alaska’s military population dramatically increased to 35,000. The U.S. built airfields from Montana to Fairbanks. U.S. production plants were used by the Soviet Union allies, one of them known as Russia, against Germany. The army, with the help of African Americans, built the Alaska-Canadian Highway to support the airfields. The highway was a road that connected Alaska and Canada. Japan used their aircraft to bomb Dutch Harbor and occupy the islands of Kiska and Attu. Japan had escaped from Alaska. I disagree with it being called the forgotten war because it was similar to other wards that are remembered and called something better. This war had a big impact and a number of things happened in this war so I do not think it should be called the forgotten war.

World War II was a war that has been taught to us to learn about how important it was and how it affected many countries including our own; the United States of America. This war was composed of many conflicts that gave the result to thee but one state in particular isn’t popularly mentioned; and that’s Alaska. Alaska had a war called the forgotten war. Why this name? in the 1930’s Germany gave promotion to Japans alliance and marched straight to war. Alaska was considered a lonely cold place that would be perfect for secret military battle grounds and a way to keep an eye on the Asian countries. The Japanese were the ones to make the first move while Germany was involved in the war against Great Britain and France. The Japanese decided to go for the Aleutian Islands so that when they had control over these they could at least have a closer look at what the United States was all about. The Aleutian Islands had very horrible arctic weather at the time so it made it very difficult for the Japanese to invade with full force leaving their defense a bit low ranged and out scaled for the United States. The United States took this a mayor threat and decided to convoke a approval to build a rail road that would make easier transportation for the United States recruitments to pass through Canada into Alaska to aid; this rail road was called the Alaska-Canadian Highway. At the time of the war the economy was considered to be under standard level of course as we know around the time came the great depression so if there was a job that came up and had money then it was beneficial. African Americans came from all corners of the United States to start to build the Alaska-Canadian highway; they worked extremely hard under poor conditions and extreme temperatures but their only desire was to serve their country and of course, the Alaskan enforcements needed their help. Now that the highway was build it was easier for the United States to move threw land since the Japanese had most domain control at sea and their naval power. If we take a moment and look at our world map; Alaska is close to Russia; historians and ecologist say that they were once connected by an ice bridge so the United States seek Russia’s help. The Japanese were in big trouble because even if they invaded over the Aleutian Islands, now they had something more to worry about; The Americans and Russians formed an army to defend Alaskan territory and keep the Japanese out. How was it forgotten? Alaska belonged to the United States, Russia went back to helping France and Great Britain as Allies and the Japanese were defended; this war floated and almost faded in the sea of history but it is a important war to understand the full concept of WWII.

The forgotten war can also be referred the the Battle of the the Aleutian Islands that occurred from June of 1942 to August of 1943. This was a battle in which the U.S. fought to get rid of Japanese forces who took over U.S. bases established on islands west of Alaska. As the US watched Japan grow stronger and stronger, the decided to build up their defenses in Alaska. considering the fact that the shortest way to Japan was from the West Coast. These newly established bases brought people of all kinds to Alaska and by 1943, "there were 35,000 military men and women in Alaska"(alaskakids.org). the US needed a route that would allow supplies to be sent to all bases. As a solution, the US built a 1,400 mile long road from Canada to Alaska. This long road is known as the Alaska Highway. Due to segregation and discrimination, many African American soldiers were given extensive labor assignments such as the construction of the Alaska Highway.
In 1942, the Japanese attacked US bases on Dutch Harbor and within a few days, they invaded the islands of Attu and Kiska which were also homes of other US bases. The Japanese soon enough built garrisons on these islands. It took the US a while to actually make a counterattack because of the hard alaskan weather. In 1943, The US set up a blockade so that Japanese Naval ships couldn't reach the garrisons on Attu. In May of I943, the US bombed Attu and Kiska before actually sending troops to reclaim the island. 11,000 soldiers were sent to Attu and seeing how they were greatly outnumbered, Japanese troops retreated to higher ground.
The US soldiers suffered more from harsh weather conditions and food shortage than they did from Japanese forces. When the US had cut off all sources of supply line, Japanese forces knew that reinforcements would most likely never come. By late May, what was left of the Japanese troops were suffering from starvation and had little to no ammunition. They surrendered without protest when US forces had them cornered in one spot of the island. Perhaps Alaska is also known as the forgotten war because of the many lives that were lost on both sides. The Battle of Attu is second to the Battle of Iwo Jima in terms of casualties. It was a cruel and bloody battle that people would be happy to forget about. I personally dont agree with calling Alaska the forgotten war because too many significant things happened. Japan was able to get there hands on a US base and actually claim it as their own. This was something I was completely unaware of until I started doing research for this blog.

Why was Alaska knows as the forgotten war during WWII? Do you agree or disagree with it being called the forgotten war? Why? Explain.
World War Two was a big war that many countries, areas, and different places across the world were involved in throughout the years, like Japan, China, United States, Germany and Russia, but there was one place that most people and including myself did not know that Alaska somehow played an extent role in World War Two. I disagree on the fact that Alaska should be called a “forgotten war” during World War Two, maybe the reason it was called the “forgotten war” was because it was not presented to the public around the world like many other countries had that were affected by the war or maybe historians think that Alaska did not affected anything in World War Two, so it should be forgotten. Alaska was an abandoned place that was very cold and had a small population, but it all changed when the German Nazis and Japan’s Tojo force wanted to dominate the world by attacking many certain nations. Alaska did had an effect during the war with the occupation of military forces was starting to increase and the transportation system was also increasing. When the war started, the U.S. Forces was building bases throughout North Canada, while Japan threatening to make Alaska as their mainland. By 1941, there were many then 30 thousand military troops in Alaska, putting that together with the civilians and the people who were working for the military, Alaska’s population was increasing that during the war, more than 100 thousand people lived in Alaska. Russia was helping the United States by having air forces to fight against Germany and Japan, and creating bases in North Canada, which was near to Alaska. To make things easier for the United States was in Alaska, there was a highway from North Alberta all the way to Richard Highway that the road went through Alaska and Canadian Wilderness, which was called the Alaskan Highway and African-Americans helped the military on building the highway. There were not that much action going on in Alaska, but the Japanese really wanted to take over certain islands in Alaska. Alaska was not the best place to have a war; where like major nations like Japan and the United States were not use to fighting wars in cold weather, but it was still an interest area for Japan to invade in. That is why I think Alaska should not be called a “forgotten war” because they help U.S. create bases for their military, which increased a lot and it was a area that Japan had an interest on invading, but the U.S. and Russia was able to protect it. Who knows what will happening if Germany or Japan was able to invade Alaska, would it had changed the outcome of the war? We will never know.

Alaska was affected in a lot of ways. The ways that Alaska has been affected because of World War 11 was due to the expansion in transportation, increase of the military and about the war itself. I disagree with it being called the forgotten war because nobody really payed attention to Alaska during war time and because Japan and America wanted it to be part of their mainlands. The U.S forces started to build places through North Canada and then came Japan threatening them so that Alaska could be their mainland. Alaska’s military population was very large they had to start providing jobs because even the civilian population went up. The Soviet Union wanted to help U.S fight the Nazi. The Alaska- Canadian Highway was built because it helped the Americans and Alaska connect together and the people that helped build that highway were the African American. Russia also took part because they were willing to help fight against Japan and Germany. In my opinion I say that ever since Japan and the Americans seen that the population of the military they wanted to take over since they seen that Alaska was so strong. The military force was very strong before the war so they wanted to take over so that can be strong like them but I don't agree with it called the forgotten war.

Before being assigned this blog I had no idea that Alaska was involved in WWII. In my opinion I disagree with Alaska being known as the forgotten war since a lot of important events took place in Alaska. Maybe it's considered the forgotten war because it wasn't spoken about or popularized as much as other wars. Alaska became involved with the war because of conflicts involving Tojo of Japan and Hitler of Germany. It was inevitable that Alaska was going to be affected by WWII. The ways in which Alaska was affected by WWII was expansion in alaska's transportation system and increase in the military's presence. In the late 1930's Japan was getting stronger so the U.S. government had to defend Alaska from being attacked by Japan. The Alcan highway which is also known as the Alaska-Canada Highway was created to support airfields and link the Alaskan outpost to the rest of the country. The Alcan Highway was constructed by African Americans. I also disagree with Alaska being known as the forgotten war because she had such a huge conflict with Japan. She was bombed by the Japanese and was also occupied of a couple of her islands. Japan occupied the islands of Attu and Kiska. Since Russia and the United States were allies during WWII, I would guess that Russia helped the U.S. in defending Alaska from Japan.

World War II also helped Alaska become more civilized because the increase of the army and citizens.
