    After The Cold War

    1) Describe Soviet policies after the Cold War.
The Soviet policies after the Cold War in my opinion had fallen. I say that due to the fact that the Republicans had though they won the cold war. They thought that they had like pushed the Soviet to “collapse”, and have their economy collapse as well. The one thing that the Soviets had running was the “soviet bloc” and those were events that had so many in shock.

    2) Analyze the Sovietization of Eastern and Central Europe.
The Sovietization of Eastern Europe and Central Europe had took place during and after WW11. This basically involved “law’s, customs, traditions, and the soviet way of life, and both on national level and in small communities”. The way that this had been recognized was because of the progangda. This was a process of “dual dimension” that is because to get the peoples “democracies” to get use to the Soviet way of life.

    3) Describe COMECON. What is its purpose and how does it affect Europe and the world?
From what I read online Comecon is the Eastern Bloc’s response to the formation of the European “economic Co-operation” in Western Europe. This affects Europe and the world because this was to prevent the soviet’s influence to move on towards the Americans, and South-East Asia.

    4) Analyze the Warsaw Pact.
The Warsaw Pact was a defense “treaty” against communist states of Eastern and Central Europe during the Cold War. The Warsaw was also a part of the Soviets military reaction of West Germany. One thing is that the Warsaw was made to maintain peace throughout Europe.

    5) How successful were governments in promoting the integration of minorities? Give examples from two regions.
In Europe there had been integration to the Muslim’s. They were successful when this happened because it had been one of the most “contentious issues” meaning that it’s causing an immigration debate in Europe. Another region is the integration of minorities in Germany. There had been an issue that they been giving trouble to the minorities and making it harder for “ foreigners, the Turks” to come to Germany. They were also successful to making that happening it was a major issue.

    6) In what ways, and with what success, did two racial, ethnic, or religious minorities attempt to achieve self determination.
In my research I found that two Self- Determination groups were Europe and the United States. The both had accepted individual liberty and freedom. But it was a problem for the minorities. At first in Europe they didn't allow it at all but it seem to find its way through so that they could reach the attempt to achieve the determination. In the United States it was not that much of issue.

  2. 1. After the fall of the Soviet Union, it had been broken up into fifteen different countries which brought freedom to a lot of the people. It showed that democracy was better than totalitarianism and evidence for the triumph of capitalism over socialism. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the government began taking aspects of socialist policies and mixing it with communist views. The country began falling into a severe economic problem. Policies needed to be made to keep the people in control because the freedom they had achieved from the fall of the Soviet Union was long overdue. People began getting more rights such as their freedom of speech, which was used mostly to criticize Gorbachev for his failure to improve the economy.

    2. Socialization is when the Western community transmits its “constitutive liberal norms” over to Central and Eastern Europe. What I believe was transmitted were the selfish political characters and leaders along with the expectations on behavior. The change in how they viewed rational state behavior by value-based norms in statehood conduct.

    3. Comecon was named by the CMEA (Council for Mutual Economic Assistance) and was an economic cooperation in Western Europe used to keep track of economical progress or development in Eastern Europe. It was very important in stopping foreign affairs with the Soviet Union. It was specially used to stop them from expanding into America or South-East Asia. Without comecon there wouldn’t have been anyone tracking the economic development in Europe.

    4. The Warsaw pact was like a treaty of friendship or mutual assistance. This pact was most closely related to a defensive treaty against communism in European states during the time period the Cold War was present. This pact was made to keep peace (just like a bunch of organizations and treaties made) this was created to maintain peace in Europe.

    5. I would argue they built off of continuous issues within their government. But overall there was a integration on muslims behalf but the thought of immigration brought upon a debate within Europe. There were sources that said a lot of treatment towards the minorities were bad and cause them to make harder decisions.

    6. Sources stated that Self Determination groups were created within Europe and America to help minorities such as homosexuals or ethnic minorities. Created so that they could prevent those select group of people from losing their rights and freedom as an individual.

    1) Describe Soviet policies after the Cold War.
-The Soviet Union collapses after the Cold War the policies started to decay. They tried to keep order but it wasn't like that because they started lose land and people started to gain a little freedom. People weren't scared like they use to which mean the status of the Union like I said became to decay. And you also have to blame the leader who
was Gorbachev because of his little efforts
    2) Analyze the Sovietization of Eastern and Central Europe.
-Both of these key impacts were both place after the world war two. This was basically to keep order in both Eastern and Central in Europe;laws, customs and traditions of Europe had to be perform because of minorities that were coming;in which propaganda lead them to hear. People had to learn about the Soviet ways some how.

    3) Describe COMECON. What is its purpose and how does it effect Europe and the world?
-Comecon was basically the"Eastern Bloc's reply to the formation of the organization for European Economic Co-operation in Western Europe." Basically this was to prevent the influence of the Americans and South Asia.

    4) Analyze the Warsaw Pact.
-The Warsaw Pact also being the treaty of friendships was a treaty among the Central and Eastern Europe. The pact was for the military of the Comecon, but was only to keep peace around. After the collapse of the USSR the alliance was change into the CSTO. But like I said this was a defense treaty and to maintain the peace around.

    5) How successful were governments in promoting the integration of minorities? Give examples from two regions.
-Russia and Germany were good at being terrible for promoting their minorities. What they basically did was do propaganda, making it seem that everything is okay until you get there and everything is terrible. One race had it bad in both regions, especially when Hitler and Stalin were in reign. Both made it really hard for their lifestyle, in which they got killed or left because of the harsh lifestyle.

    6) In what ways, and with what success, did two racial, ethnic, or religious minorities attempt to achieve self determination.
-The best examples I can come up with America with the racial group of black people and the Jews that were there own race and religious standpoint in Russia. For the black people even though it's ahead of time they tried to be equal just like the white people, so doing stands like protest and sometimes even riots; even if though was wrong. Towards the end America expected the fact that they're equal. For the Jews it was harder because there race was getting bashed in Germany and getting kicked out of Russia. What they did is make a stand for themselves which made an impact.

    1) Describe Soviet policies after the Cold War.
    - After the cold war, Russia was a whole different country compared to itself during the cold war. After the cold war, Russia started to dramatically cut their military spending. The military was a great of creating jobs in terms of industrialization, but ever since the military cuts began the unemployment rate was increased. Now, what’s ironic about this is that in the beginning of 1990s, Russia entered a Capitalist reform method in order to get their economy back up, they were experiencing an economic crisis, one worst than the Great Depression! Another policy was that since there was no exactly a treaty in the end of the war, a country like Russia who was a nuclear power country, it all became dependable on the economy.

    2) Analyze the Sovietization of Eastern and Central Europe.
    - The term, Sovietization its pretty self explanatory, it basically means a establishment of a Soviet way of ruling a country on a country that is not ruled by Soviets. This is done by the strong use of propaganda, a way into get people to agree with what you have. Notable Sovietizations were after the World War 2 in Eastern Europe, then later on the years into the cold war, the Sovietization of states in the Central Europe, creating the Warsaw Pact.

    3) Describe COMECON. What is its purpose and how does it affect Europe and the world?
    - COMECON or Council for Mutual Economic Assistance was established in 1949. During the Cold War, this council only focused on the Eastern side of Europe, but later on as years passed by other countries that were not in the Eastern side of Europe like, Cuba and Vietnam joined COMECON. Even though its headquarters as placed in Moscow, it seemed like that only countries of a Communist government could be a part of COMECON since it was originally founded under the Soviet Union. The COMECON was just like the Committee of European Economic Cooperation but for the Western side of Europe. Its purpose of COMECON was simple, it was a way for the Communist countries to have a close economic relationship, so in that way the members of the council could help one’s country in terms of investments and support.

    4) Analyze the Warsaw Pact.
    - This pact focused a lot towards Communism in Russia and its members of states. Pretty much, the plan as to protect the following communist countries: “Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria”(History.com). The pact stated that any country tried to attack any of these states that a military under the commander Marshal Ivan S.

    5) How successful were governments in promoting the integration of minorities? Give examples from two regions.
    - The government were never successful in promoting or supporting the minorities during the cold war, or whenever. Two countries that demonstrates the failure of promoting integration of minorities are both in Russia and Germany. Like with the meaning of minority, why would the government focus on them when they had to take of bigger problems? It’s almost like they had no time to focus on the ‘lower class’, They did but it wasn’t the best.

  5. 6) In what ways, and with what success, did two racial, ethnic, or religious minorities attempt to achieve self determination.
    - Self determination means a country who determines its own form of Government. Two groups who achieved their goals are both the cases in German and Taiwan. Starting with Taiwan, Nationalists in Taiwan argued that they were the ones who controlled China but at the same time their goals was not to separate China as a whole, soon enough this argument was between the Nationalists and the Communist government. At some point, many people in Taiwan were in favor of keeping the island an independent country but at the end China considers Taiwan to be a part of the country. Now with the case in Germany, the Sudeten Germans wanted to be a part of Germany, but at the same time during the Cold War, the region that the Sudetens wanted, was controlled by Czechoslovakia and the wanted to this all under the lead of the Czechoslovakia.

Describe Soviet policies after the Cold War.
The Soviets policies after the Cold war were more liberal than communist. Since the Soviet union no longer existed many of the countries that were under it control attain their independence and created policies that were more western influence that communist,
    2) Analyze the Sovietization of Eastern and Central Europe. The Soviet union spread their spheres of influence over Eastern and Central Europe as a method of gaining control and expanding.
    3) Describe COMECON. What is its purpose and how does it affect Europe and the world?
The COMECON was created by the Soviets because they were worried about the Marshall Plan the West had created. The Soviets did not want to lose the countries that it had captured and spread it spheres of influence to the West.
    4) Analyze the Warsaw Pact.
The Warsaw pact was the pack created between the eight communist countries in Central and Eastern Europe as defense mechanisms to protect themselves from any threats from outer forces that are potential enemies.
    5) How successful were governments in promoting the integration of minorities? Give examples from two regions.
Russia’s Government was terrible at doing this Stalin pulled the same method as Hitler and discriminated against the Jews because he wanted to partner up with Hitler. And China did a horrible job at this because during the cultural revolution anything that was foreign that came from an other countries wasn’t expected that included people.
    6) In what ways, and with what success, did two racial, ethnic, or religious minorities attempt to achieve self determination.
In the ways that the blacks fought for their freedom during the era of slavery. they fought for that they believed in they they achieved their goal they gained their freedom than ever came segregation which is why we now have a black president that has been in house for two sessions.

    After the Cold War

    1. Soviet policies took a turn after the Cold War. As we know, the Soviet Union was beginning to have difficulties with regaining a strong connection of the government and the fundalism of communism during the cold war because it had caused them to be enemies against the United states. After the Cold War, the Soviets felt a bit embarrassed by the way they were dealing with governmental duties after being exposed of the ending of the war but also for seeing that their time was coming to a close. A new powerful communistic country (China) came to raise up and the policies were changed of the USSR because they felt like they had everything under control but the way that the Chinese government had things set up, it was evident that they were going to sustain (well) with this form of government.

    2. The USSR during the beginning of the cold war decided to bring forward a plan in which they would be able to expand their territory as they felt like this was a way to show the United States that they were also a Big influence in the world and that they could have done the same and collect allies; even though these allies were forced under their command. Sovietization in Eastern and Central Europe had a big influence in the way these countries worked and managed themselves. Some like western Germany were lucky enough to not have been taken under communism but eastern germany did. This influence was big and negative as there was not any form of freedom for these people and the Soviet could have done anything they wanted with them as there really was a strong control. The Soviet later lost all these territories ending with the Berlin Wall falling.

    3. The COMECON was an Eastern Bloc European economic organization which was held by the Soviet Union which had controlled the countries under the Soviets power, including socialist countries around the world. COMECON stands for (Council for Mutual Economic Assistance). The simplest way to describe this organization is that if any country had economical problems or trouble doing their part in this union, it could be brought forward as this was a great alliance. Now, the interesting thing is that the basis of this is that this organization’s fundamentals ran under communism logic (everyone worked together for one government and end of story) this was interesting because even when these countries were under the soviet and part of something much greater than their own country, they still felt like there was not enough freedom which is what they wanted.

    4. The Warsaw Pact was a treaty done by eight communist states which were in the region of Central and Eastern Europe which was active during the cold war. Just like the COMECON that was an alliance, this was an alliance but in a military structure. Historians say that the origin of this alliance came when the Soviet Union decided to take control of eastern Germany and having success came forward the idea of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and mutual assistance.

    ReplyDelete
  9. 5. The government of the soviet union was not as successful in promoting the integration of minorities. In the eastern region of Germany and the central communist power, the minorities of the Gypsies and Jews were treated poorly, even if WWII was over and Hitler was no more, there was still a sense of hatred towards these people. The majority felt like there was not a place for them as it was (troublesome) during the holocaust to have them around as anyone who gave them shelter would be in huge trouble and could have gone to jail. At the time, the LGBT society wasn’t as developed as it is today in Europe and at the time the Soviet Union. Stalin made it legal for a man to be homosexual. Early LGBT protest raised in Germany as early as during the division of the Berlin but the majority rejected this movement as it was not natural and it was illegal to protest against something that was most certainly going to throw you in Jail.

    6. Self determination from a minority was very risky as this was a total suicidal attempt during the soviet Union times. Stalin decided to have a non-religious policy which banned anyone from actually praising any God or having any form of faith as his view was that religion would only bring rebels and he did not want to deal with it. Minority as the protestant/Christian religion was trying to raise itself as they felt like the government could have taken anything but not their faith and their union. The Catholic church did not interfere as they had came out of the catholic believes and it was not “appropriate” to help those who had left the faith. Jews, besides being persecuted still in some ways rather than others but at some point they felt safe to celebrate their holidays and be free to worship but being in a territory like the USSR, it was difficult to be who you wanted to be as a religious minority.

    1. After the cold war the Soviet Union had fallen apart and was left in an economic crisis along with less power because the other member states got their independence. The Soviet Union were looking at socialism and adding some of its policies into communism because communism itself had failed the country and the leader at the time wanted to try something new. Some Socialist policies were used because the Soviet Union believed that it would help turn around the economy and make it more stabilized.

    2. Sovietization is the adoption of a new way of life that models the soviet life such as laws, traditions, culture, etc. This was passed on in Eastern Europe through propaganda or groups such as the Kulaks and many more. So basically it was like applying Soviet policies into other countries using different tactics.

    3. The council for mutual economic assistance knows as the COMECON was made 1949 and was in effect until 1991. “It was the Eastern bloc’s reply to the formation of the organization for European economic co-operation in Western Europe.” This affected Europe and Western Europe because the two organizations were not allowed to trade with each other only with the members inside their organization. This resulted in poor market values but it also helped prevent foreign affairs within the European countries.

    4. The Warsaw pact is a treaty that was signed by the Soviet Union and its member states in Warsaw. It was made as a defense organization meaning that if anyone of the member states or the Soviet Union were being attacked by an outside force than the other member would join in and help each other.

    5. Germany and Russia were both really bad at promoting integration of minorities because they focused more on how they were going to deal with them or what to do with them instead of treating them like the rest of society. The minorities were put into bad situations because of the governments and leaders poor decision to include them with the rest of the population or using them to make a better economy.

    6. In South Africa I would say that the minorities (black people) were fighting for their freedom in every possible way. They protested, made riots, fought the police back, and did a lot more because they wanted their freedom and independence. The minorities were successful after many years of struggling towards freedom but achieved their goal through perseverance. Another examples are the Jews in Germany which were not successful in getting their freedom until the end of the world war two because Hitler really hated them and did anything he could to punish them or either get rid of them.

  11. 1) Describe Soviet policies after the Cold War.
After the Cold War, Gorbachev was replaced by Boris Yeltsin, one of his previous supporters. Yeltsin enacted rather Western policies such as allowing privatization of industry and allowing private property to be purchased, along with private banks. He allowed more freedom of speech for the people and the media, he also allowed Western influence into Russia (such as music). Not everything went according to plan, however, the economy was not successfully reformed and as such it saw limited growth, even resorting to default in 1998. He also sent troops into Chechnya in 1994 and again in 1999.
    2) Analyze the Sovietization of Eastern and Central Europe.
After WW2, the remaining giants, the USA and USSR began to spread their influence around Europe. Communist parties became successful in some countries after the War, thus began Sovietization. Sovietization began through the establishment of governments lead by Moscow-trained politicians, which would then utilize “Salami tactics” to slice off different political parties in the countries they controlled until only Stalinist politicians remained.
    3) Describe COMECON. What is its purpose and how does it affect Europe and the world?
The COMECON was the Soviet response to the West’s Marshall Plan. It was a plan of economic aid among Soviet states, intending to provide the Soviet alternative to the Marshall Plan and “monopolizing” financial aid for Soviet controlled countries. It affected Europe in that it further divided Europe into the “two camps”, West vs East, USA vs USSR. It affected the world in that it furthered the notion of a division between Capitalism and Communism, further fueling the fears of the Cold War.
    4) Analyze the Warsaw Pact.
The Warsaw pact was, like the COMECON, a Soviet response to Western organizations or plans. It was a total alliance between the Communist states of Europe which stated that these states would cooperate with each other and assist each other. This, beyond its stated goals, also helped Russia establish control over other Communist states, ensuring they would remain loyal to the Soviet Union and under their control.
    5) How successful were governments in promoting the integration of minorities? Give examples from two regions.
In Ukraine, the Crimean Tatars were allowed to return to Ukraine around the end of the Soviet Union. However, their lands were now occupied by Russians and Ukrainians. Their integration was not truly promoted since no laws to allow them to claim lands were created. Since their land was already taken, many simply settled down again and reclaimed their land. This is considered a crime however, which further created tensions between the Tatars and Russians/Ukrainians. The Tatars have had trouble re establishing Mosques and other Islamic institutions in the area, often having opposition from the Orthodox Catholic Russians and Ukrainians.
In the new unified Germany, however, Muslims and Turks were greatly accepted into the society. Attempts to integrate them into German society had been going on since the 1950s. The Turkish people however have not been too successful in integrating completely as many first generation immigrants and lower class workers rarely learn German. The government however has indeed promoted an integration effort for a long time.

  12. 6) In what ways, and with what success, did two racial, ethnic, or religious minorities attempt to achieve self determination.
The Chechens declared Chechnya an independent state in 1991, however this was largely opposed to by the Russian government. The Chechen wish for self-determination even led to two Chechen wars in 1994 and 1999. Up to this day, insurgency against Russia remains in Chechnya, and Chechnya remains a part of Russia.
The Crimean Tatars do desire an independent Crimea, however, as mentioned, their lands are not technically theirs anymore. The Crimean peninsula is currently largely populated by Ukrainians and Russians, and as a result, there can be no Crimean self-determined state and the land is currently claimed by Ukraine.

Policies in the Soviet Union were beginning to take more of a democratic approach to things rather than a communist approach. Policies such as Gorbachev’s glasnost and perestroika gave the people a sense of free will which many of them took advantage of. It wasn’t too long before these policies led to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 where the Soviet Union was broken up into 15 separate countries.

    2. Sovietization is when Country adopts a way of life as well as a mentality that originally came from the Soviet Union. Sovietization occurred in Eastern and Central Europe who adopted Soviet ideologies such as discrimination against the “bourgeois”.

    3. Comecon, established in 1949, was created with a purpose of helping of organizing the economic development of Eastern European countries. It affected Europe as well as other nations in the sense that countries part of this union would be isolated from the rest of the world. Countries in this union could seek economic aid without having to interact with other nations.

    4. The Warsaw Pact was a defence organization in which the Soviet Union was in charge of armed forces of the other members. The treaty was signed between the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Albania, and Romania. The Warsaw treaty was created due to the fact that west Germany was already being militarized.

    5. The Russian and and German governments were unsuccessful in promoting the integration of minorities. The integration of minorities was a difficult task due to the mentality of most citizens who had negative opinions about minorities due to propaganda.

    6. African Americans and Jews have always been minorities who underwent hardships in the US and in Europe but unions groups such as NAACP and homeland for jewish people were created to help improve the lives of these minorities

    After the Cold War

    1) Describe Soviet policies after the Cold War.

-The Soviet’s policies after the Cold war were being reformed to make the economy stronger because at this point it was in bad condition since Gorbachev failed to improve the economy before he resigned. The government made changes towards foreign affairs for example because the soviet split into fifteen different countries the soviet draw close to exit. They needed to reorganize their political systems because each of those countries were independent. Leaving these different countries finalizing their own policies was how the new “Russia” was like and completely different policies after the cold war.

    2) Analyze the Sovietization of Eastern and Central Europe.

•Sovietization of Eastern and Central Europe had a big influence and did not collect allies. Within the Eastern side many things had changed but not quite in the Central Europe Side.

    3) Describe COMECON. What is its purpose and how does it effect Europe and the world?

•The Comecon was there to have controlling under the countries. It helped a lot because if any countries had problems they would look at the COMECON for help so it was a great tool in use for them to use.

    4) Analyze the Warsaw Pact.

The Warsaw Pact was a mutual agreement between the member states and the soviet. Kind of l ike a peace treaty it was signed on 1955 until 1991 and it was formed by the soviet.

    5) How successful were governments in promoting the integration of minorities? Give examples from two regions.

-In my opinion I believe that the government was as successful in promoting the integration of minorities. For example, within the eastern region of Germany the integration of minorities of the Gypsies and Jews was not treated very good. Regardless, I think that if WWII was over there was still a lot of hate towards the people. The majority felt like they were not welcomed. Another example of a minority group at that time would be the LGBT community, because in was in Europe and they were not accepted they felt like it was wrong. Due to that those people were persecuted and torn down with hostility.

    6) In what ways, and with what success, did two racial, ethnic, or religious minorities attempt to achieve self determination.

•Self determination was very hard to be a sucessful with because of stalin's rule and regulations like for example the catholic church had a rough time doing what they wanted. 17. 1) Describe Soviet policies after the Cold War.
After the Cold War, Soviet policies were destroyed. The destruction of Soviet policies was evident when nations were separating themselves from the USSR and creating independent states. The Soviet Union was falling apart mainly because of the reforms that were being allowed by the leader of the Soviet Union, president Mikhail Gorbachev. This led to the resignation of Gorbachev as the leader of the Soviet Union.

    2) Analyze the Sovietization of Eastern and Central Europe.
When it comes to the Sovietization of Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union took advantage of Eastern Europe. For example, the Soviet Union would compensate for their losses by taking over Eastern Europe. In Central Europe, Moscow did not allow free press, anti-Soviet movements, or political parties to exist. Other than these discontinuations, there were also educational reforms that occurred in Central Europe at the hands of Sovietization.

    3) Describe COMECON. What is its purpose and how does it affect Europe and the world?
Comecon was an organization created in 1949 and its purpose was to organize the economic development of countries in Eastern Europe that belonged to the Soviet Union. There were many nations that were members of Comecon like; the Soviet Union, Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and a few other countries. Not only was Europe affected by this organization but so was the world because there were non European nations that were apart of the organization. For example, Cuba and Vietnam partook in Comecon.

    4) Analyze the Warsaw Pact.
The Warsaw Pact was an organization that was created for mutual-defense. The nations involved in the Warsaw Pact were the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, East Germany, and Albania. Both East Germany and Bulgaria withdrew from the Warsaw Pact. East Germany withdrew in 1990 and Albania did the same in 1968. The treaty went through a renewal on April 26, 1985. The treaty called for a maintenance of Soviet Military units and a unified military command.

    5) How successful were governments in promoting the integration of minorities? Give examples from two regions.
Two regions’ governments that were unsuccessful in promoting the integration of minorities was Russia and Germany. One of the major reasons of why Russia was unsuccessful was because of their homophobia. A lot of people in Russia are homophobic which prevents integration. A major example of why Germany was unsuccessful was because of the holocaust. It was not just one minority group that was targeted. Minority groups targeted included Jewish people, homosexuals, and gypsies.

    6) In what ways, and with what success, did two racial, ethnic, or religious minorities attempt to achieve self determination.
Jewish people that survived the holocaust migrated to European territories which were liberated by western allies. They were put in refugee camps. African Americans were another group that faced injustice. They attempted to achieve self determination by creating organizations. For example, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was created for the benefit of African American people.
