This week's blog requires reading and research. You are required to create a story on the history of South Africa using the following key vocabulary terms and people:
African National Congress
Apartheid
Boer War
Trevor Huddleston
Paul Kruger
Nelson Mandela
Cecil Rhodes
Sanctions against South Africa
Desmond Tutu
Here is the catch - you NEED to write this using language that a 6th or 7th grader would be able to comprehend. That means the YOU need to understand the terms and topic prior to writing. Be aware, do NOT write this as a regular blog - this is a story that needs to be conveyed to young children. Can you do this?

Many Many years ago very bad people took control of South Africa and they had racial segregation that was known as Apartheid. There were superheros that were put into place to stop these villains. The first superhero was mega tutu. During the day he is Desmond Tutu who was the general secretary of the South African council of churches. Mega tutu was against the apartheid in South Africa he felt that everyone should be treated equal.
Their were many problems between South Africa and the South African Republic. The master of the republic was nasty Kruger, he believed that apartheid shouldn't go away. Mega Tutu and nasty Kruger where mad at each other and this started the First Boer War. This war was between the United Kingdom and the South African Republic. Cecil Rhodes was involved during the war because he was a British politician and believed in British colonialism. After the war was over and mega tutu won they made the African National Congress. The congress was put into place to unite the African people after the war and to create a non-racial society...
82 years later mega tutu wasn't strong enough to watch over South Africa so a new superhero was born his name was Mandela the great. He had a sidekick named huddle cuddle, during the day Nelson Mandela is the President of South Africa. Trevor Huddleston was an english bishop who help Mandela clean up Africa and create new rules. For example Huddleston helped build 3 churches, 7 schools, and 3 nursery schools

SOUTH AFRICAN HISTORY
Hello there young middle schoolers! Today I will write to you fellow students about the history of South Africa! I will mention important people and important events that left a mark in the South African History.
It started in 1899 when a war started to happen between the British empire and the ‘Boers’ which were fighters from the South African side. The war started when a small conflict between the British and the Boers started to begin. But before this even started to happen there was a man named Paul Kruger who (who was a president of the army and the South African Republic) loved South Africa. Kruger tried to talk to the British Government to make the British government to stop controlling parts of South Africa that did not end so well even though Kruger was a person who was strong and confident when it came to negotiation. Meanwhile there was another man who was from British named Cecil John Rhodes which he believed that making sure that the British controlled parts of South Africa was a benefit to the economy in Britain also to make sure that South Africa would not expand more towards the sea because this would hurt the British economy.
Kruger and Rhodes were always fighting each other which is believed to historians that could've been a cause for the Boer War of 1899.
ReplyDeleteSouth Africa has a history of racism big time, racism towards the black. In Africa there was this way of segregation (segregation means the separation of a certain person and in this case the black in South Africa) called Apartheid. It was created in 1948 after the second World War. Apartheid eventually a law, yes a law! The purpose of this law was to make the living for the blacks just worst, making it worst by prohibiting marriage between someone black and white, basically the main goal of the law was to separate the blacks from the whites, some places a black person could not be there and there were even factories where it was made just for someone who is black and for someone who is white. Obviously from nowadays this is a very wrong thing to do. There were many people in South Africa who thought this was wrong and not fair at all, these people stood up for South Africa to end Apartheid.
Among those people who stood up for South Africa they are, Desmond Tutu,
Nelson Mandela and Trevor Huddleston. Desmond Tutu was a archbishop of Cape Town, he was famous for his acts against the Apartheid, he was man who not only fought for Apartheid but he fought for many other things for the population of South Africa. Tutu became the Secretary General of the South African Council and with this being said he had more power to fight against the Apartheid. Tutu fought for the end of Apartheid for many years, he received lots of help for different organizations and the public. Up to this date, Tutu is still a very important person to the world, he is known worldwide for all the great thing he has done for South Africa. Now with Trevor Huddleston he was known for being a Anti-Apartheid activist movement, Huddleston was an English Archbishop and he felt devastated once he heard that the Apartheid became a law in South Africa. Just like Tutu, Huddleston fought against the Apartheid laws for many years, at some point, in 1981, Huddleston became the president of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa and this happened after he retired, even after he retired he still kept fighting for the rights of the black population in South Africa. Now at last with Nelson Mandela, being the biggest name in the Anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa’s history. Mandela fought agaisnt the Apartheid law in South Africa just like many other fighters, but unfortunately his actions against the law made him go to jail for almost 30 long years! After Mandela got out of jail in 1930that was when he felt more powerful for fighting more for the end of the apartheid. After years of fighting for the rights of Apartheid before becoming the President of South Africa, the Apartheid was over in 1994 a lot of negotiations between the ANC (Africa National Congress) and the goverment, a multiracial election was held and Mandela won with most of the votes ending the Apartheid, making Mandela South Africa’s first black president in 1994.

A long, long time ago and I'm not talking about the land of dinosaurs, South Africa had beef. I wouldn't say it was hood versus hood but somebody did go to jail. That person was Neslon Mandela, who was the President of South Africa, and went to jail because of conspiracy to overthrow the state. A bad man you say, but he probably thought he was right. This like his right hand man, day one man Trevor who tried to help him clean Africa and also was a bishop.
The Apartheid was blah you know talken about the race and segregation which sucks but El TuTu aka Desmond TuTu who was AGAINST that, plus the man was working with God in the churches with Trevor so it's only right. Cecilia, me and him go way back though but when he started thinking of taking over I was like chill..which lead to to the Boar war, but it was a long war and my squad took that L. But I member seeing good ole Paul Kruger there and not talking about the football player. Paul was a good leader to have on our side ill tell you that, we needed his leadership.
Sanctions against South Africa really got on my nerves because ever little thing people tried to do to help Africa they were basically against it and but African National Congress was different and wanted to unit people. Just think of em as friends you can trust.

South Africa had many leaders in the past that wanted to make the country a better place. There were also organizations that worked to make changes in South Africa. Nelson Mandela is probably the most well known leader from South Africa. He is the former president of South Africa and he acted against apartheid. Apartheid was a horrible system of legislation. Apartheid caused racial segregation which means that the country was divided based on race. White people had more privileges and rights than people of other races. Nelson Mandela was an extraordinary man who did a lot to help South Africa become an equal and safer country. One of the organizations formed to make social changes in South Africa was the African National Congress which was formed in 1912 in order to bring African people together. The ANC also fought for political, social, and economic changes. The boer wars were fought for independence in South Africa. Desmond Tutu is an social rights activist. Tutu wanted to make changes in South Africa just like Nelson Mandela. Tutu was furious about all the racism and segregation and wanted to get rid of apartheid. Cecil Rhodes wanted to expand Britain's empire in South Africa. I believe that he should of worked on social problems instead of trying to expand South Africa. Paul Kruger was a soldier, farmer, statesman, and one of the founding fathers of the Afrikkans nation. He was also the face of the Boer resistance against the British. Trevor Huddleston was against apartheid and was involved in movements in South Africa. Sanctions against South Africa involved trade and finance.

The Boer war was a war between South Africa and Britain and it began because of a disagreement between the two. Paul Kruger was a man in charge of the South African republic and he tried to tell Britain to leave South Africa alone but they wouldn’t. A man named Cecil John Rhodes who was from Britain wanted parts of South Africa because it helped their economy. This is why there were arguments between the two. Along time ago in South Africa there were many different groups of people tried to change South Africa. For example there was apartheid which meant that different races were split apart and the white people had more power than the blacks. There were people such as nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu who thought it was wrong and he tried to get rid of it but they got punished for trying to. The African national congress was formed by a bunch of people just like nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu; and their overall goal was to make everything equal for everyone. Mandela was in jail for a lot of years but he kept fighting until he reached his goal and became the first South African president.

History of South Africa: Giving a voice!
Once Upon A Time;
Long Ago in Africa, Britain Arose to take over to colonize and bring fordward a system of Apartheid; blacks had a minor voice and no rights. South Africa; to stop them, had come with a plan known as the Anti-Apartheid movement which was a boycott towards the British; supporting those who didn’t have support; the blacks which were non-white. Sanctions against the Nationalist party came upon South Africa because people didn’t like that the party only supported the whites and not the blacks. Although there was a lot of opposition, Apartheid kept growing and had a stronger voice and dominance over those who protested to change these rules of white’s having a greater voice in South Africa. Due to so much rejection of the dark-skinned people in South Africa, a war Arose called the second Boer war; this was fought between Britain and South Africans. Among these very bad people, there were good people who defended South Africa like King and better known as President Paul Kruger who fought very hard against the British. Sadly, good people tend to lose strength which is what happened to Kruger, but not all hope was lost. All of a sudden, it was like magic! Both British and Africans began to work both ways to giving a chance to Dark Skins a voice! Father Trevor from England was involved in the Anti-Apartheid movement while there was a man who would change the face of South Africa but he was doing his work as a conspiracy not yet known. Cecil Rhodes was a business man who was involved with the politics in South Africa; his primary focus to get diamonds and riches for Great Britain but for the political side, he wanted to make sure that Africans were vulnerable. He passed a law that Africans cannot have any weapons; this was a step closer for the man that South Africa needed. News began to go around that there was a man named Nelson Mandela that was doing a boycott to the unfair system of Great Britain. The government from Britain saw this and took him into the dungeons! That gave nelson more time to prepare his plan and execute it perfectly. With the Help of Desmond Tutu, Nelson came out of Jail to make a reform; known as the African National congress. Nelson Mandela became the first black president of South Africa and did a way better in short time then what the British had done for years! Nelson Mandela past away Last year but along with Tutu’s legacy of building schools, churches and even community service places in South Africa; Nelson’s legacy will forever live because he gave a voice to South Africa.
The End.

ReplyDeleteSo, South Africa is the country at the veeeery bottom of tip of Africa (the South). Before 1877, a lot of South Africa was owned by people from the Netherlands. After that, the British began taking over the colonies where the Boers were, the Boers was the name for the Dutch dudes that lived in there. They did not like being ruled by the British and began moving to their own country which they called Transvaal. The South African Republic was the new name of the Boer country. A man named Paul Kruger who was the South African President and army general always tried to talk to the British so they would stop messing with their land. The bad thing was, a British guy called Cecil Rhodes always said no to Kruger and was stubborn about the British controlling South Africa for Britain’s benefit. This didn’t work and the Boers fought the Brits in the Boers War of 1899. The Boers won and the British recognized (accepted that the country existed) the South African Republic.
It wasn’t all rainbows and flowers afterwards, racism with the native Africans has always been a reaaaally big deal. The white guys in power had this law called “Apartheid” which meant that the blacks were always separated from the whites. Whites could get education, be in the government and many more privileges, when blacks were treated like crap by them and used as slaves. The Africans took none of that and began to stand up against it at the end of the 40’s and the next years. Some of the large figures that rose for African rights were Desmond Tutu, the famous Nelson Mandela, and Trevor Huddleston. Desmond Tutu was an African archbishop (a very high level priest) and though that racism and inequality was not what God said was good in the bible and used this to fight the Apartheid and other problems affecting the people of South Africa. Trevor Huddleston was a white bishop who, just like Tutu, thought Apartheid was absolutely wrong. He founded and was the leader of the Anti-Apartheid activist movement and retired in 1983. Nelson Mandela was the most famous of the three, he was member of the African National Congress (called the ANC too) and fought many times against the Apartheid. He used civil disobedience (not obeying the government’s laws), strikes (not working until a change is made) and boycotts (not using services or products). The government did not like him and he was sent to jail in 1964 where he stayed for 27 years! Afterwards, he was released thanks to lots of people from all around the world and South Africa petitioning. When he got out, he began to talk with the government about ending the Apartheid. South Africa had its first election where blacks were allowed to vote in 1994. Mandela won and officially ended the Apartheid in that same year!
And that is how South Africa as we know it was created!
A long time ago in South Africa there was this thing called apartheid, which means the segregation or discrimination on grounds of race. Very similar to how there was racism between white and black people. Except the people who were being discriminated were the Africans by the British. The British are the bad guys who came and annexed (took over) the Africans land. By the British doing that (taking over their land) it led to a battle between the two groups called the first Boer War where the Africans rebelled (fought back, sometimes for a purpose or cause) against the British. The Africans (also called Boers) won that war. There was a second Boer war because the British had turned down a request the Boers wanted. This war included the whole South Africa this time, overall in which the Boers ended up winning their freedom from the British. There were important people to these Boers. One of them being Desmond Tutu who was the general secretary of South Africa for the churches. But even more important than that is the person who is Nelson Mandela, he was the former leader (president) for South Africa. He acted against apartheid. A person who would be against him was Cecil Rhodes because he wanted to expand Britain’s Empire and you can tell so far the Boers wanted nothing to do with them anymore after the Second Boer War but a person who was handy to Mandela was Trevor Huddleston who got involved in the movements in South Africa. He was also against apartheid. Another useful man to the resistance movement for the African Nation, who also was the face of the Boer resistance against the British was a man named Paul Kruger. He was a farmer. The Sanctions against South Africa handled trade and finance but when the good people tried to help them they practically got turned down where was the African National Congress only wanted to help South Africa and unite the people.

During the South African History, there was many things that happened during that time. There were a lot of bad people out there trying to separate the south african people. Apartheid is basically what these bad people tried to do. Apartheid means separation of people by different color or race. There was a strong super hero group named “African National Congress” they tried to help destroy the bad people who tried to separate people in Africa. Not only the African National Congress help beat the bad guys , but the Sanctions against South Africa also helped too. They did a big part of defeating the guys. They made laws that would overpower which means take down Apartheid. One of the bad guys name was Cecil Rhodes and he wanted to build an empire in South Africa, now in order to do that he had to get rid of people. Thats were a Superhero came to rescue again! His name was Nelson Mandela ,he was a former president of South Africa. He helped strikeout Apartheid once and for all! To keep people spirits lifted , there was a priest named Trevor Huddleston who helped people pray to God to feel more safer and have a peace of mind. He also did not like the Apartheid. Of Course when people argue theres always a civil way of making an agreement ,thats exactly what happened. Boer War ,had happened between the British and South Africans. Paul Kruger was a brave soldier who fought in the war. Desmond Tutu was another leader just like Nelson Mandela , who tried his best to get rid of Apartheid.

In the history of South Africa many events took place that created many problems for the country. One of the problems was the Apartheid. It all happen because the British was colonizing (settling) in South Africa. So Apartheid means separating people from the color of their skin and their race. The British they wanted to separate themselves from the Africans. This caused an uprising known as the Boer War where the Africans were fights the British. To end the fighting agreements were made by the South Africans and the British. But the British did not keep their promise and that lead to a second Boer war.President Paul Kruger fought for the South Africans but wasn't really successful at first it took time. The Africans had strong supporters that fought for them one was Trevor Huddleston. He was a British priest that was part of the Anti-Apartheid movement. Anti means no. An other support was Cecil Rhodes he outlawed weapons in South Africa. He was also a businessman that worked with the british in trading goods. Then you have last but not least Desmond Tutu he was the man that help Nelson Mandela out of prison and also a member of the (ANC). Nelson Mandela yet another strong leader protested about the unfair treatments the British to the Africans. Due to this he was arrested or several times and put into jails that weren't very pleasant. During this time in prison the African National Congress was created in 1912. African National Congress (ANC) is worldwide liberation movement. The purpose for it was to create a united democratic society, fight racism, and sexist. A sexist is a when a person believes for example, males are higher ranked than females. Mandela became South Africa presidents and made a lot of changes that improve the economy (created school and etc), and society.
