    1. According to source A from the packet, Stalin’s advantages over his rivals in the period 1924-29 where many. Stalin had direct contact with the Soviet Union when working as secretary for the USSR; what is important to consider that someone who is in a organization can have more Intel than someone who isn’t as involved. Although Trotsky was next in line to be the leader if anything happened to Lenin, Stalin studied very closely Lenin’s ways of the USSR. I feel like Stalin was already four steps ahead of these leaders that were above him and having more information on how to manage a country and keeping a goal to keep growing the USSR was all he needed. Stalin taking after Lenin consisted of him having to exile, disappear and kill every leader including Trotsky to take domain over the USSR. Another advantage that Stalin had over his rivals is that he had time; since the Soviet was always too busy trying to progress and the top leaders where the ones that were in charge of making this change, Stalin was basically in the background watching what was happening. I believe that these advantages can only sum up so much others that added to get Stalin into power and to be recognized as he is today all over the world because of his dictatorship.
    2. The Doctrine of socialism in one country was the primary reason why Stalin won the power struggle during the 1920’s. The Doctrine of socialism was a theory brought up by Joseph Stalin which was later adopted by the Soviet which led to a great recognition of Him because of it. This theory consisted of the idea that Europe had gone through many revolutions including Russia so Stalin’s goals were to begin to build strength internally. Because of the power struggle of which route the Soviet needed to take; there needed to be some form of solution that would bring the soviet to support. Stalin took advantage of this and took the idea from the Marxist position. The Marxist position had a similar theory but it was discarded because it wasn’t suitable for the position the Soviet wanted to take. Instead, Stalin took the root and made some changes so that things wouldn’t look the same and the Marxism would be different from Stalinism. Because of this, Stalin won the power struggle and this (years after) became the Soviet Union establishment. Stalin wasn’t running for the position alone; Trotsky brought forward another theory called permanent resolution, but Stalin won over his theory.

  2. 3. In order to understand Stalin’s use of terror we need to go back to Lenin’s rule. When Lenin was in power he saw that there was too much of the rich taking over the poor so Lenin and a tense riot persuaded the poor to take over the properties of the rich and push forward a reform of communism. This was the time that Leaders began to question the Marxism theory that was implanted in the Soviet but this was what pushed Lenin to rule till he died. Now that Lenin had passed on, Trotsky; his rightful successor wanted to push a new theory which was the permanent resolution but this was discarded when Stalin used fear to promote his theory; the Socialism in one country theory. Stalin wanted to make sure to make as much of an opposition to Trotsky that he began to plot his exile but the more he did, the more Trotsky got people on his side. Trotsky resigned his position and back away. Even when being of the position, Trotsky still had supporters working for Stalin but Stalin became very persuasive in his theory that these had Trotsky exile and eventually killed. And so began the ear of terror in the Soviet; Stalin didn’t trust any of these men that were near him so deaths were frequent and Stalin’s power increased “for the better of Russia, for the power of the Soviet.”
    4. The Reason why Stalin was able to defeat his opponents like Trotsky and succeed in the power struggle by 1929 was because of the advantages he had that they didn’t. aside from Time that got him thinking and able to persuade people into trusting in him. He brought an idea that was suited for the time. It wasn’t that his theory was the best or better than Trotsky’s (in my opinion) it was simply that Stalin eliminated anyone who withstood his power. It isn’t registered that Trotsky did anything as terrifying as Stalin which is good because violence really isn’t the answer but, things like this were necessary to survive and proceed onto who would be the leader of the Soviet. Because of the terror by Stalin before and even after the 1930’s, deaths of generals were beginning to be more common so of course there was someone after the power they just didn’t know who because the Soviet just needed a resolution.

    Joseph Stalin part 3

    1. What, according to Source A below, were Stalin's advantages over his rivals in the period 1924-29?
Stalin’s advantages over his rivals in the period 1924-29 were that when Lenin died he had made Trotsky be absence from the funeral. Stalin knew how to create and use symbols to his advantage. Trotsky and Lenin worked together but there had been a comment stating that “ if his rivals had demanded compliance with the testament at this point, Stalin would not have survived their attacks--his support base was not yet large enough”. Trotsky had been silence about that comment but then Stalin;s allies had came in to back him back.

    2. How far was the doctrine of "socialism in one country" the main reason why Stalin won the power struggle during the 1920s?
The socialism in one country was the main reason why Stalin won the power struggle during the 1920’s was because of the defeats of all the communist revolutions in Europe but not Russia but they noticed that the Soviet Union would start to be stronger as a whole. There were many defeats in countries such as Germany,Hungary, and ended Bolshevik that is what began the “socialism in one country”.

    3. Examine and evaluate Stalin's use of terror during the 1930s in establishing and maintaining his regime in the USSR.
Stalin’s use of terror during the 1930’s in establishing and maintaining his regime in the USSR was that Stalin wanted to do so much to get Trotsky out of the way. All of the things that Stalin was doing later made Trotsky want to take himself of the picture and back way. Trotsky did end up exile and backed away but still had some of his own people that were on his side working for Stalin. Stalin was so cruel, he knew that Trotsky had people of his own helping him, he made Trotsky exile back away and then later was killed. Stalin to me started getting a little crazy he did not want anybody to help he didn't want to trust anyone around him, a lot of deaths had took place and that made his power rise.

    4. Explain why Stalin was able to defeat his main opponents and succeed in the power struggle by 1929.
Stalin was able to defeat his main opponents and succeed in the power struggle by 1929, because of his main opponent Trotsky. Stalin had a lot of advantages that the other’s didn't have. Stalin was very persuasive and made people trust him. Stalin was the type of person that would say its either my way or no way and if they didn't want to follow his rules they would get killed.

    1. What were Stalin's advantages over his rivals in the period 1924-29?

    - Stalin was mentioned by historians as a political genius with his smart tactics into getting to the top where he always desired. One of his many advantages was that his allies could fight the battles for him while his character simply remained the same. “Stalin was able to claim victory over Trotsky by using a decisive strategy involving key positioning from his role of general secretary, and his ability to select those people who shared his views for membership” (College Term Papers). This was also another main advantage Stalin has over Trotsky.

    2. How far was the doctrine of "socialism in one country" the main reason why Stalin won the power struggle during the 1920s?

    - Stalin and Trotsky did not like each other. The people were expecting Trotsky to be the next leader when Lenin died. The statement “Socialism in one country” was originated by Stalin and this was an way to show to the public how he wanted to revolutionize Russia as a whole. Meanwhile Trotsky focused more on a idea of “World Revolution”. People favored Stalin instead of Trotsky, whereas Stalin had a stronger argument.

    3. Examine and evaluate Stalin's use of terror during the 1930s in establishing and maintaining his regime in the USSR.

    - Stalin’s use of terror was all analyzed by a man named Martemyan Ryutin. He wrote a 200 page investigation regarding the violence that was being created with in Stalin. The document basically states that the people who are working with Stalin in the government, their lives are in danger. On top of that, he removed all of the best of the Bolsheviks and was now proceeding on to creating his particular dictatorship.

    4. Explain why Stalin was able to defeat his main opponents and succeed in the power struggle by 1929.

    - Stalin was able to defeat his main opponents because apparently they could not understand how important the position he was in is, so they supported his election. Even thought, Trotsky position after Lenin passed away was far more stronger that Stalin, he still managed to win the power struggle by 1929. It all started when Stalin was a general secretary with his allies by his side. In 1924 was when he started rising with more power with more people by his side. Moral of the story, Trotsky slowly became weaker and weaker and fewer people on his side supporting him, meanwhile Stalin was the opposite, becoming more and more powerful with more people on his side supporting him.

    1. What, according to Source A below, were Stalin's advantages over his rivals in the period 1924-29? Stalin had many advantages against his rivals in the period 1924-29.Stalin was on good terms with Lenin at a time but not for long. Stalin and Lenin had a disagreement over an issue of foreign trade, and Stalin's policy was accepted. That situation instilled fear in Lenin because he felt that Stalin was overtaking the party. This made Lenin contact Trotsky for his support. Stalin did not like that idea because his political career would be crushed if Lenin and Trotsky were to form an alliance. Lenin did not want Stalin to succeed him as the next leader. Stalin became the leader anyways. That was possible because Stalin created a close political relationship with Gregory Zinoviev and Lev Kamenev.

    2. How far was the doctrine of "socialism in one country" the main reason why Stalin won the power struggle during the 1920s? The doctrine made people realize that Trotsky was scary and they all went against him. Before that saying, people expected Trotsky was going to become the next leader after Lenin. That was not the case. People fled to Stalin's side, even Zinoviev and Kamenev who were close associates of Lenin.
    3. Examine and evaluate Stalin's use of terror during the 1930s in establishing and maintaining his regime in the USSR. Stalin wanted to make the USSR nor strong and the only way he can do that was by eliminating the kulaks. He divided the kulaks into three sections. The first to be eliminated, the second to be imprisoned, and the third to be deported. That was super terrible, but Stalin did not care. Stalin also wanted to modernize the industry. He wanted to pay higher wages to specific workers but not all. His left-wing opponents were against that and said that his inequality was betraying socialism.
    4. Explain why Stalin was able to defeat his main opponents and succeed in the power struggle by 1929.
Stalin was able to defeat his main opponents and succeed in the power struggle because of all of his strategies. Since he decided to go against the kulaks, that helped him in succeeding. Also all of the alliance he made was helpful for him also. He not only got support from Zinoviev and Kamenev, but also from Ivar Smilga and Karl Radek. Smilga and Radek both supported Stalin's policy of collectivization.

  7. 1. What were Stalin's advantages over his rivals in the period 1924-29?
Stalin’s main advantage over Trotsky and company was the power he acquired prior to Lenin’s retirement and death. Prior to that, he was in Lenin’s personal circle of Bolsheviks and highly respected. Thanks to this he became the Communist Party’s general secretary. This position gave Stalin large amounts of power since he could expel any Old Bolsheviks and replace them with others loyal to himself. Moreover, his vision and doctrine of “Socialism in one country” was more welcome than Trotsky’s “global Socialism” expansionist ideals upon the aforementioned doctrine’s failure.
    2. How far was the doctrine of "socialism in one country" the main reason why Stalin won the power struggle during the 1920s?
Stalin’s “Socialism in one country” theory contrasted Leon Trotsky’s more Marxist “Global Socialism” theory. The main reason Stalin’s doctrine succeeded was that Trotsky’s doctrine failed, and thus Stalin’s plan was favored. Trotsky’s doctrine was put into practice widely in Europe, however Communist revolutions and parties around Europe in the 1920’s were defeated, thus losing support for his ideals. Stalin’s plan was sounder and therefore gained more support for him, instead of spending Russia’s efforts to seed Communism around Europe, he argued that a great, industrial Socialist Russia should be established instead.
    3. Examine and evaluate Stalins use of terror during the 1930s in establishing and maintaining his regime in the USSR.
Stalin utilized Iron Fist policies during his regime in the USSR. He heavily censored media and publishing, no one could criticize him and all publications were to portray him as Russia's wise hero. Whatever Stalin said was done or dire consequences would follow for whoever dared to secretly or publicly go against him. Whoever disobeyed was arrested, along with any "recruited" by such person often including simple acquaintances and family members. These people were then either sent to a GULAG or executed. This created fear for Stalin and ensured no challengers would rise and his title as the Soviet leader would remain with him until his death.
    4. Explain why Stalin was able to defeat his main opponents and succeed in the power struggle by 1929.
Stalin was able to defeat his main opponents for two main reasons: His position, and exploiting his opponents’ failures. He exploited the “global Socialism” doctrine’s failure to its fullest extent; his fellow Russians were worried that Communism would not see any spread outside Russia and he brought a great solution at the time, his “Socialism in one country” ideals reenergized his compatriots and gained more support for himself. His position as the General Secretary allowed him to appoint Soviets loyal to him and eventually shift the power to himself.

  8. 1. What, according to Source A below, were Stalin's advantages over his rivals in the period 1924-29?
Since Stalin was the complete ruler of Russia, he had many advantages over his rivals in the period 1924-29. One of the advantages he was he had the power to give anyone an official position in the party. By using this power, he only gave the job to his supporters. This would give him the advantage to have a party that will be supporting him all the way. Another advantage the Stalin had was if someone opposed of him he had the power to out-vote them. Many people feared Stalin so they would do whatever he asked.
    2. How far was the doctrine of "socialism in one country" the main reason why Stalin won the power struggle during the 1920s?
The doctrine of “socialism in one country” was the main reason why Stalin won the power struggle during the 1920s. The doctrine “socialism in one country” means everyone in the Soviet Union would work and stick together “regardless of the international situation.” This doctrine was encouraged by Stalin. By encouraging this doctrine, Stalin won the support of the Bukharin and the right wing party. When Stalin gained this support, he was able to make the leaders of the left wing leave their positions and he was in control. Also, he forced Trotsky into exile. With Stalin encouraging the doctrine of “socialism in one country”, he was able to gain supporters, leading to his rise in power.
    3. Examine and evaluate Stalin’s use of terror during the 1930s in establishing and maintaining his regime in the USSR.
The reason why Stalin used terror was so that he can maintain his regime in the USSR. If a leader showed weakness then the people would find a way to break the leader down. Stalin showed no weakness and demonstrated how powerful and strong he was. By doing so, he tortured and executed people. Another punishment he did was sent Russians to labor camps. Anyone who opposed Stalin would have to suffer, which is the reason why most of the Russians agree with him and try to stay on his good side. This was how Stalin maintained his regime in the USSR.
    4. Explain why Stalin was able to defeat his main opponents and succeed in the power struggle by 1929.
The reason why Stalin was able to defeat his main opponents, the left wing, was because he had a lot of supporters. Also because he had many advantages that the left wing did not have. Stalin was able to succeed in the power struggle because he created a plan that will help Russia, the 5 year plan, he did whatever in his power to make sure that his plan was executed. Anyone who got in his way would be executed, tortured, or sent to the labor camp.

    Joseph Stalin (Part 3)

    1. What, according to Source A below, were Stalin's advantages over his rivals in the period 1924-29?
    - According to source A , his advantages over his rivals in the period 1924-29 was that Stalin saw that after Lenin had died the new leader in position to replace him would of been, Leon Trotsky. So from stopping that from happening he gained a really close “political relationship” with Gregory Zinoviev and Lev Kamenez. After Lenin's death,he published a book called “ Foundations of Leninism” ,which gained him more political credit. That was a huge advantage for him, even over his rivals because after he published that he was accused of “being dictatorial” by Leon Trotsky. He had his “Political relationship” he made with those to political figures to back him up in this argument.

    2. How far was the doctrine of "socialism in one country" the main reason why Stalin won the power struggle during the 1920s?
The doctrine of “Socialism in one country”, was the main reason of why Stalin won the power struggle during the 1920’s. I believe this to a certain extent because Leon Trotsky was exiled by Stalin. So technically it was not his words that made him win, it was just the simple fact that his opponent was dead and no longer existing. Stalin arranged Trotsky to be removed from the government , and he began to attack his belief of “in need of world revolution” with a strong battle using his “political relationship” as back up.
    3. Examine and evaluate Stalin's use of terror during the 1930s in establishing and maintaining his regime in the USSR.
During the 930’s, Stalin ruled by terror and with a totalitarian grip in order to eliminate any enemies or opponents who tried to stop him from reaching his goals. Stalin expanded the powers of the secret police, and he also encouraged citizens to spy on one another. he also had millions of people killed or sent to the “Gulag system of forced labor camps”. Stalin set the Great Purge, “a series of campaigns designed to rid the Communist Party”, the military and other parts of Soviet society from those he considered a threat. Joseph Stalin did not mellow with age: He prosecuted a reign of terror throughout the persecution in the postwar USSR. He felt that was the only way to maintain his regime in the USSR.
    4. Explain why Stalin was able to defeat his main opponents and succeed in the power struggle by 1929.
Stalin was able to defeat his main opponents ,because he had a smart game plan. He connected and had a strong relationship with “Political Figures” that defended him when he needed it. He demanded a lot of things, and if anyone had a problem with it he will get them killed. He succeeded in the power struggles by 1929,because he got rid of his main opponent, and rule with terror. His development plan was centered on government control of the economy and included the forced collectivization of Soviet agriculture, in which the government took control of farms. He was leading the Soviet in good hands ,but in bad condition.

  10. 1. Stalin had great advantages to his rivals in 1924-1929. Stalin had won over the trust of Lenin for a while. Thus bringing Stalin to a higher ranking in the government that controlled the jobs of those under him politically. All of a sudden Stalin and Lenin didn’t agree on terms of Foreign trade and soon enough Stalin wasn’t to be trust with all the power of the party because Lenin feared that Stalin did not know how to handle the country. When Lenin became ill Stalin began on taking over the party by getting rid of those who he believed suspected to stop him from gaining leadership. Stalin was also able to gain leadership because he was very popular with people by the time Lenin was ill.

    2. The Doctrine was said to make people all turn against Trotsky but before the doctrine was exposed all the peasants of Russia believed Trotsky was going to become the leader of Russia after Lenin. But Stalin used his power to his advantage and people began to fall onto his side.

    3. Stalin wanted to advance Russia’s economy to catch up to the other leading powers of the world because if they didn’t catch up he believed they would be weak in defending themselves from intruding countries. So in order to do this he had a five year plan that was not so successful so he had to make another five year plan. Other than this anyone who opposed his ideas and made it public he purged them so they had no freedom of speech because if they spoke wrong, Stalin would consider them a threat to advancing Russia’s economy and they would get executed. He was very successful in using terror to keep the USSR in shape to keep his country in control and make sure they did not rebel and turn against the government.

    4. Stalin was able to defeat his main opponents for the power struggle by using all his strategies and his popularity against them. He targeted the kulak so he gained more support from the people of Russia. He used his political power against other opponents by having them get kicked out off office.

    1. Stalin’s advantages during the period 1924-1929 were that he had more power over his opponents since he was really close with Lenin. Lenin was dead at the time and Stalin took over and saw this as an advantage. Stalin became stronger than Trotsky and he was the secretary of the communist party moving up the ranks. Stalin eventually became the leader by siding with people that supported him and gained many supporters which led to his power.

    2. The statement socialism in one country is the main reason why Stalin was chosen over Trotsky because the citizens were just worried about who was going to make Russia stronger and a better nation than anyone else. This theory was better than Trotsky which was more focused on Europe as a whole society and making it better to help revolutionizes Russia. Stalin’s socialism in one country basically convinced the people of Russia that it would be guaranteed to make Russia better as a whole and revolutionized.

    3. Stalin used terror in order to make his five year plan work. For example Stalin would kill or punish anyone who disobeyed him or did not agree with him. Stalin would threaten people to make sure that he got what he wanted in order to succeed with his goals. Stalin got rid of anyone who was a threat to him and he really didn’t trust anyone.
