1. What was China like in the early 20th century?
- China had a long history of being defeated in wars against other countries. Were talking about both of the Opium wars (1839-42, 1856-1860 and 1894-1895). For the farmers of the lower class, it was nearly impossible making a living because government was so hard on them in terms of taxes. The government was corrupt according to the people and this caused somewhat of a pressure for the people living in the town. At some point China was divided into ‘spheres of influence’ which this was a way to make a profit out of China. After a while of China being such a country corrupted by its government, its people came together to generate a revolution, all students, farmers and the people that lived in town came together under the revolutionary leadership of Sun Yat Sen. Unfortunately, when Sen passed away, the revolution process kind of died.
2. How did Mao Zedong achieve leadership of the Chinese Communist Party?
- Mao Zedong, a Marxist and a student of the Beijing University, he believes in a theory that: “all power grows out of the barrel of a gun”. With this being said, we can totally assume that he’s a man that takes power the violent way and that violence is the only way to make a change in China. Mao was a part of the Chinese communist party, but he wasn't in a high power at the time when he started. They wanted to kick out all the imperialists out of China that was bought by the British back in early 20th century. Mao was a political organizer in Shanghai and with such a excellence in work, he was chosen to be in the central committee of the CCP and GMD parties. Soon enough, the CCP broke its friendship with GMD, Mao created his own group of communists. Mao decided to his own force made up by his followers, but why? Mao ordered his troops to march across China which was believed to be over 10,000 km! This was an way for him to take control of areas as he marched along the way. As they marched along their desired route, Map worked on ways to increase his authority to the people.
3. Why did civil war break out in China in 1946?
- Japanese started to attack China in 1937 which was led by Jiang Jieshi, in order to get closer to the CGP party to create once again a “United Front”. This was good for the communists because this was an opportunity for them to expand their forces and create better tactics. The communists did not have a lot of time as the Japanese forced to move into southern china. In 1941, Jiang attacked the communists and at some point, the U.S was helping the Japanese take back its controlled area in northern China which happened. The U.S. did not want a civil war to happen in China so they made leaders from both sides (Mao and Jiang) sign treaties that stated that they would come together and work as one. With this being said, unexpectedly both sides started to fight for piece of land and U.S. simply let them fight.
4. Why did Mao become ruler of China in 1949?
- When the civil was still going on between both sides as stated above, Mao was the one who managed to settle down, this lead to Mao’s forces to become way more organized than ever, they were called the People Liberation’s Army or PLA. They were so organized and dangerous that they managed to defeat Jian's forces including with the aid by the U.S. and USSR. Basically, Mao managed to wipe out Jian out of China for good leaving China to be ruled by Mao.
5. Why had Mao emerged as the unchallenged leader of the CCP by 1945?
ReplyDelete- Mao believed that the only way to make a change in China was by using violence. Mao was of the very first members of the CCP party, as inspired by CCP, he joined the GMD and he was working on a way to make both parties allie. Soon enough, he was working as a propagandists for the United Front, meanwhile when Jiang was now the new leader of the GMD, he focused on stop the spreading the idea of communism in China, this was when Mao joined other CCP leader to create a larger communist force. This caused Mao to move to another location and this movement was called the Long March whereas this caused Mao to increase his rank in CCP. As we know the GMD attacked China, just as they thought they were doing good till they met Mao’s well organized forces. With such a good work in his part, in 1943: “Mao received the title of “Chairman" of the Communist Central Committee — a title that heretofore had not existed — and Chairman of the Politburo, making him the unchallenged leader of the CCP.”
6. Why was China unstable in the early 20th century?
- China was a unstable country due to its multiple loses in wars as I mentioned in the first question, the government was corrupt, making a living for the people was nearly impossible. China had a hard time coming together as a country and its land was mainly controlled by other nations as a form of profits.
7. Why do you think that the Long March was later afforded such an important place in Maoist propaganda?
- The propaganda generated by Mao was an way to spread his ideology for his people that followed him and even gather more people to follow him. I think the Long March was a way to spread his propaganda as he went along the way, even though the march was an tactics for the communists to move somewhere else. The fact that Mao managed to make 100,000 people follow him across mountains is just important in his propaganda part, the long march can be mentioned as an inspiration for many people and it can just be another reason for someone to follow Mao.

Mao and China
What was China like in the early 20th century?
China in the 20th century had been defeated by other countries. They had a lot of humiliation for over 100 years. China had been defeated in the Opium wars in 1839-42 and 1856-60, and by the Japanese in 1894-95. China had individuals that were struggling to survive and dealing with high government taxes. The townspeople were under pressure, students were full of influence in despair of failure. The people ended up coming together and made a revolution. It was ran by Sun Yat Sen. But to me it seem like without Sun Yat Sen that couldn't make it so when he passed it seem like they were stuck and things just fell apart.
How did Mao Zedong achieve leadership of the Chinese Communist Party?
Mao Zedong achieved leadership of the Chinese Communist party due to him introducing his own brand of communism some rural areas. Mao started his own communist group. He made them march across China. The reason he did that was so that he could take control over the places that he marched through along the way with his own communist group. Mao had increased a power on the people.
Why did civil war break out in China in 1946?
The civil war break out in China in 1946 was because the Japanese starting to attack them in 1937. The attack was led by Jiang Jieshi and it was so that he could get closer to the CCP again and he could create a “United Front”. That was a good thing for the communist because it gave them the chance to be able to make their forces stronger and bigger. Jiang Jieshi later then attacked the communist, the U.S had been helping them so that they can take back the areas where they controlled in the “northern” place of china. The U.S made Mao and Jiang sign a treaties that said they will have to work together. To bad that didn't work and they ended up fighting for land and the U.S just let them go at it.
Why did Mao become ruler of China in 1949?
Mao became ruler of China in 1949 because his forces were well organized. They were called “People Liberation Army”. They were very powerful they defeated Jiangs forces, even US, and USSR. It was like Mao pushed Jiang out of the way and that is how he became the ruler of China 1949.
Why had Mao Zedong emerged as the unchallenged leader of the CCP by 1945?
Mao Zedong had emerged as the unchallenged leader of the CCP by 1945 because he seen that the only way to change china was by using violence. He was the one of the first members of the CCP, and then joined GMD then wanted to try to make both parties come together. The Leader of GMD was Jiang he wanted to stop the communism in China. Then Mao came and joined the CCP to make larger communism. The rank of the CCP had increased. The CCP had assumed that they were doing good and well until Mao came along and showed them his good and well organized forces. The chairman was the one who made him unchallenge the leader of the CCP by 1945.
Why was China unstable in the early 20th century?
China was unstable in the early 20th century because they had a down fall. They were defeated by many, and people were struggling to survive as I said in the first question. China had a hard time to stand up on their own they had other people trying to control.
Why do you think that the Long March was later afforded such an important place in Maoist propaganda?
The Long March was later afforded such an important place in Maoist propaganda because this was a way for Mao to show the body of doctrine and other his ideas. Mao had over 100,00 people march across with him. That is something that will always be remember.

Mao and China
1. What was China like in the early 20th century?
China had a history of losing wars to other countries. China lost both the Opium wars from 1939-1842, 1856-1860 and 1894-1895). Lower class and farmers were being hurt by the government by high taxes. The government was bad and made everyone on their feet. Sun Yat Sen was a very looked up to man because he gathered all the students, farmers, and local citizens to start a revolutionary leadership.
2. How did Mao Zedong achieve leadership of the Chinese communist party?
Zedong achieve leadership of a Chinese communist party because he created a communist party of his own and started a March and marched over 10,000 km and as they walked past areas they would get the support of them. He was getting more and more people to come on his side. Mao got the respect of the people. He was also a violent man and that is how he worked his way up in the communist party.
3. Why did civil war break out in China in 1946?
The Japanese attacked the Chinese in 1937. The attack on the chinese was led by Jiang Jieshi. He led this attack because he wanted to get to the CCP and create the "United front". America came into this battle to stop the attack because America owned some northern part of China. America made Zedong and Jieshi sign a treaty saying that they would work together and not go against each other. But that did not work so they just ended up fighting each other.

The long March was later an important place in Maoist propaganda because that is when it all began for Mao in becoming leader of China. Mao had over 100,000 people march with him. That was a great event that would stay with China forever

What was China like in the early 20th century?
How did Mao Zedong achieve leadership of the Chinese Communist Party?
-China in the 20Century was a powerful nation like Russia,USA or even Germany. The economy were very low and the education scheme wasn't very good as well. Most the kids that didn't go to school had to or was force to war; which meant a lot of people dying at an early age which is pitiful. And on top of that the growth of China was bad for the economy, the reason why a women couldn't have a lot of kids.
Why did civil war break out in China in 1946?
Mao was a different from the other leaders in China. He wasn't ruthless like other leaders for example Hitler and Stalin. He was gentle and cared about the people in China. So by being active with the people; long marches that would rally more people and also trying to get the education in China. There was a point in time were the kids in China wasn't getting the education they needed, but he changed all that. Another way is trying to fight of the KMT who was a group that wouldn't all the bad for China.
Why did Mao become ruler of China in 1949?
-Mao, was more organized than the past leaders that came before him, Mao pushed China to be better at any cost. His views other people followed as well, even sometimes if it went to violence. Even so Mao is the only one who was going to step up in which he did because China did a complete 360°.
Why had Mao Zedong emerged as the unchallenged leader of the CCP by 1945?
-Unchallenged leader because Mao was the smartest leader to come in and make an impact. He wanted peace and tried to make an alliance's even if it was challenging. Also would resort to violence if he needed to but everyone was on his side that made it a no challenge for anyone to knock him off.
Why was China unstable in the early 20th century?
-This was due to war and the losses they had to overcome. This is the main reason even though education was bad, but bringing the economy down cause you have to pay for the preparation for war and for China's case they were winning a lot of wars, meaning you have to pay for the damages also.
Why do you think that the Long March was later afforded such an important place in Maoist propaganda?
-The Long March was important because doing my I.A this is the first time I read that a leader taking the peaceful way in trying to rally everyone on his side. Even though in the March some people didn't like it, all the people in the KMT hated so that's why some people did die. But Mao was fighting for everyone and everything that was right without violence, which is hard because most people rather fight. To Mao violence was the last thing on his mind because why would you try to hurt your nation and the people in it.

I.A research
1. China lost a lot of wars (1839-1842, 1856-1860 and 1894-1895). It was hard for some of the working class to make money, like the farmers for example. The farmers were taxed heavily by the government, which is why it was hard for them and other working class/lower class families to make a decent income. Eventually the citizens of china turned to make a revolution with the leadership of Sun Yat Sen.
ReplyDelete2. Mao Zedong achieved his leadership of the Chinese Communist Party by creating a march over long distances. Doing so he gathered support from people as he began walking through rural areas people joined his side. He had created a communist party of his own and began taking control of places he had marched through.
3. Looking at how aggressive the Japanese were, they had attacked China in 1937 in hopes to create a “United Front” with the CCP. America had intervened in this conflict because they did not want the Civil war to happen in Northern China (silly Americans once again sticking our head where it does not belong). America had made Mao and Jiang sign a treaty saying they would not go to war but eventually they began to fight.
4. Mao managed to take control of China during the civil war. He was able to become ruler of China mainly because his forces were very well organized. The forces had earned the title “People Liberation Army”, they were strong enough to eventually defeat Jiangs forces with the help of America and Russia.
5. Mao was an aggressive leader and when he became the leader of China, he sensed that the only way that he was going to be able to make change in China was through violence. He was one of the first members of the CCP and he then attempted to join the GMD where he would attempt to join both the parties together. When Mao was in the CCP he improved them by showing them his well organized forces in which caused them to be unchallenged.
6. China had became unstable because they had a huge downfall which was the defeats of the many wars. Then came the harsh taxes from the government on the working/lower class families. With all the other countries trying to control China, it did not make it a place for people to be happy at.
7. The long march became an important place in Maoist propaganda because Mao was able to show how organized he can be. Doing so he was able to gather over 100,000 people march with him thus causing it to become a very important part of history for china.

1.What was China like in the early 20th century?
ReplyDeleteIn the early 20 century, Chinese people were starving and were having a hard time surviving. One of the reasons why they were struggling to survive was because they had to pay a lot of government taxes. Townspeople were scared of inflation and was skeptical to how the government officials were being corrupted. The students were irritated by the foreign influences and lost hope in the future dynasty.
2. How did Mao Zedong achieve leadership of the Chinese Communist Party?
Mao Zedong believed that if you wanted something to be done you have to fight for it. By showing that he was man enough to take control over a situation he gained supporters and this busted his level of leadership in this Chinese Communist Party. He created his own Chinese Communist Party and march across China for over 10,000 km. While he went on his march, he took control of everywhere he marched.
3. Why did civil war break out in China in 1946?

However, the U.S did not want there to be a war so they made China and Japan sign a peace treaty agreeing to work together. however this treaty was broken and both, China and Japan fought again.
4. Why did Mao become ruler of China in 1949?
Mao became ruler of China in 1949 because they, the Chinese Communist Party, won the Chinese Civil War. The Chinese Civil War was between the KMT Party and the Chinese Communist Party. Since he was the leader of the Chinese Communist Party, he became the ruler of China in 1949.
5. Why had Mao Zedong emerged as the unchallenged leader of the CCP by 1945?
Mao Zedong was emerged as the unchallenged leader of the CCP by 1945 because the only way he got what he wanted was by using force and violence. Mao’s rank increased when he relocated and created the long march movement.

1. In the 20th century China wasn’t doing so great in terms of economy and how people lived. The lower class and farmers were struggling with how to survive because they were getting taxed heavily because China needed the money they lost in wars. The people of China were mad at the government and started fighting back which eventually led to a revolution.
2. Mao Zedong achieved leadership of the Chinese communist party by gathering people to be on his side. He got support all over china by creating marches across china and people started to follow him. Mao Zedong started his own communist group because he was very experienced in the communist party and he knew that he had a chance to start his own group since he knew what he was doing. Mao Zedong cared about the people of china and wanted a revolutionized country like the rest of the citizens.
3. A civil war was broke out in China in 1946 because Jiang who was with the Japanese wanted become united with china so he started attacking China. Mao and Jiang didn’t get a long which created tensions and both leaders fought for land in China. Mao was in favor of communism while and Jiang wasn’t and things just didn’t work out for them.
4. Mao Zedong became ruler of China in 1949 because of his party the people liberation army. Mao Zedong knew how to organize himself and other which was an advantage because it made him more powerful. Jiang’s people were no match to Zedong’s people, which led Zedong to defeat Jiang and take over china.
5. Mao Zedong emerged as the unchallenged leader of the CCP because Mao was making a lot of good changes for china and made everything organized. Mao expanded communism and the GMD could not take on the CCP because Mao was a really smart leader and trained his people well. Mao’s opponents were not a challenge to him because of how organized he was and became really powerful.
6. China was unstable in the early 20th century because they had lost many wars and left the country in need of money. This is why the government taxed the citizens heavily which made it hard for the lower class to survive because most of their money went to taxes. Since the people could afford to send their kids to schools the education was really bad at the time and the economy was really bad. The government was messed up and this made China unstable.
7. The long march was later afforded such as an important place in Maoist because the long marches was the strategy that Mao used in order to gain supporters across china. This is how Mao was able to show his leadership and show that he cared about the country through these marches. If it wasn’t for the marches then I don’t think Mao would have had that many supporters on his side.

1. What was China like in the early 20th century?
During the early 20th century, China was not in great shape. China faced defeat in the "Opium Wars" of 1839-42 and 1856-60 and was also defeated by the Japanese in 1894-95. China being defeated by foreign countries was not the only negative thing that happened to China. Peasants in China were had to fight to survive and they despised heavy government taxes. Leader Sun Yat-sen tried to help get China out of the dumps and back on top. A revolutionary uprising occurred in central China in 1911 that was led by Sun Yat-sen. Peasants, townspeople, and students were brought together. The Qing Dynasty ruled China since 1644 but later crumpled after the proclamation if a Chinese republic. Even though these positive events led by Sun Yat-sen happened, China faced humiliation once again. In 1918, the First World War ended in Europe and China acquired more humiliation.
2. How did Mao Zedong achieve leadership of the Chinese Communist Party?
Mao Zedong was able to achieve leadership of the Chinese Communist Party by taking initiative. He became a Marxist and thought the only way China can change is through violence. Mao would participate in Chinese Communist Party meetings and communicate with people who were communist thinkers. He created the Red Army. Mao disciplined the army and made them reliable. Even though the army did not have many weapons, they were taught guerrilla tactics. Mao also gained leadership due to him making the Red Army participate in the long march.
3. Why did civil war break out in China in 1946?
When the Japanese issued an attack on China in 1937, Jiang Jieshi wanted to become allies with the CCP. The communist were able to expand their army and work on their guerrilla tactics. During that time, the communists were able to overcome Japanese forces in the north. The USA then stepped in wanting to help China out by giving them aid and weapons. The USA wanted Mao and Jiang to sign an agreement. They quickly both went against each other fate signing the agreement.
4. Why did Mao become ruler of China in 1949?
Mao became ruler of China because of the civil war of 1946-49. The People's Liberation Army was Mao's communist military forces and was able to defeat Jiang Jieshi's forces. It took four years for the PLA to defeat Jiang's forces, but they were able to get it done. Jiang's forces was defeated even with the help from America.
5. Why had Mao Zedong emerged as the unchallenged leader of the CCP by 1945?
Mao emerged as an unchallenged leader because of all his ideas and plans. He was able to acquire leadership of the CCP and he had total control over China. As stated before, Mao believed that the only way China was going to change was through violence. This made him create the Red Army and become the ruler of China. He did not like when people were disloyal or betrayed him. When he discovered people like these, he would have them purged.
6. Why was China unstable in the early 20th century?
China was unstable during the early 20th century because of all the humiliation it went through. After facing defeat, China was not on top economically. There were peasants that struggled to survive and who we're not able to pay government taxes.
7. Why do you think that the Long March was later afforded such an important place in Maoist propaganda?
I think the Long March was an important place in Maoist propaganda. The Long March showed how powerful Mao was and how disciplined his army was. The Long March consisted of 100,000 marches, but sadly only 5000 made it to the end. The Red Army was also able to break through Jiang's forces which was a positive thing for Mao since he was enemies with Jiang.

Mao and China
1. China, in the early 20th century was in starting to be recognized as a country of early history around the world. During this time, there were a lot of changes that came towards this nation who would achieve maximum power and worldly known today. At the beginning of the century China was just a mess which no one seemed to resolve; the Industries that the rest of the world was building up weren’t there and to make things worse, the government that was implemented was doing a good job. China was not ready for the world’s stage. This was also a time that some compare to as one of the hardest moments for the Chinese as in the early 20th century; the Great Leap Forward was promoted and the Cultural Revolution as well under one man; Mao. These events were terrible for the Chinese and having them endure this pain; it wasn’t easy to trust in a man holding the government who didn’t seem like it was doing much for the country but only bringing greater pain that sometimes (by historians) would be considered as worse than WWII.
2. Mao Zedong, was a man of ambition who wanted to bring a reform china, there was no way that there was going to be a change if there was not any action taken. China began to look at countries like Russia who was part of the USSR and practiced Communism. Communism was a form that China would soon adopt by one single part. The Communist party of China took in Mao for his initiative in finding “creative” ways to adapt to the country. Although communism wasn’t active in China, Mao had advantage as he had research and implementations that over ruled anyone in the party. According to History, at the Opening of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in Peking, Mao Zedong announced that the new Chinese government will be “under the dictatorship of the Communist Party of China.”
3. The Civil war in China of 1946 was war that was fought between the forces that were remaining loyal to the government of the Republic of China and the military forces that were loyal to the Chinese Communist People’s Republic of China. This war was caused because there was a need of a change which of course was important for China because the Republic of China wasn’t bringing in what the Chinese needed. This government was looked down upon because the people wanted a change which what Mao was trying to offer. Declaring himself as a leader after war caused many commotion because there were still those who were loyal to the Republic but that didn’t stop Mao from executing them. The war brought a change afterwards but it did cause a lot of deaths for the simple confliction of two governments that had different ideas for the great nation of China.
4. The impressive move in made by the army that supported the communist movement of Mao, caused Mao to rise into power. The Nationalist had no longer control of the land including Shanghai. By September, Mao had reached the capital and would proclaim words that will forever be recorded in history. This man stated “Our work will go down in the history of mankind!; Ours will no longer be a nation subject to insult and humiliation, We have stood up!.” This was demonstrating to the world that China (composed of 1/4th of the world’s population) had now stood up and begins to make progress. Mao did this because he believed that this would push China to work harder and be in the pedestal where they are today for having such a great economy and control of the economy worldwide. It was now his turn to show what he had to bring to the Communist China.
5. Mao Zedong emerged as the unchallenged leader of the CCP by 1945 because of the actions that lead him to have the power and this title. During the revolution, Mao had an entire Army against Nationalist to take over the great cities to then proceed to Shanghai and proclaim himself as the ruler of the Communist China. This army wasn’t any army; it was fierce and stronger than the Army that kept loyal to the Nationalist party. This army brought Mao victory. Because of the victories that were passing down by this Communist army, in the declaration of Mao’s reign, people proclaimed Mao as this unchallenged leader of the CCP. Even after when he began to work with China, he still kept this title from people as he made changes that some were for the “better” of China and some were harsh that left devastation to some of these Chinese citizens.
ReplyDelete6. China’s instability took place in the 20th century. During this time period, China was in a form of division of the world’s western nation’s do to the fact that they wanted to have a strong establishment in the world; to be known was this nation’s desire and they wanted to get out of these bad times but the government was not collaborating. Because of their rejections to foreners and any different religious groups outside of Buddhism, the country wasn’t making any connections with any other countries; yes the government wasn’t working but the people did more complain than an actual movement. This was broken after Mao came into power as he rallied up an army that went against Nationalist and then the Communist came into power.
7. I believe that the Long march was later afforded such as an important placement in Maoist propaganda because this was a visual movement in which Mao was portrayed as some form of savior and changer in the Chinese community. He knew that there was a movement for Nationalist control in the countryside of China. It was like a game of cat and mouse; Mao would send troops to stop an attempt of Nationalist rise but when he stopped it in one place someone rose up again in another side. He did not lose his sight of his vision for China so putting these propaganda posters made him look like anyone who did follow him would receive goods. There is a poster in which I investigated that had Mao in a worker’s clothe and in front of him was a table full of fruits and vegetables. This was him letting China know that with him there would be progress and it was necessary to keep China united and not have the Nationalist rise up or else China would go back to the bad control of the government. I personally believe that the nationalist would not rise again since Mao had destroyed the army in the revolution but Mao stood strong since he wanted the better for China; to be recognized by the world.

ReplyDelete1. What was China like in the early 20th century?
In the early 20th Century, China had fallen to western powers after losing the Opium Wars, moreover they were also defeated by the Japanese. Thus, China fell into political chaos and became divided. The people were heavily taxed, corruption was rampant, and education was reserved for the wealthier citizens. Sun Yat Sen organized a revolution in 1912 and, with the aid of the people, the crumbling Qing Dynasty was overthrown and a Republic was formed. Sun left his post in favor of Shikai Yuan. His new government was weak however and, upon his death in 1916, China again fell into disarray with smaller states inside China going to war against each other in order to seize control, eventually the Kuomintang came victorious.
2. How did Mao Zedong achieve leadership of the Chinese Communist Party?
Originally, Mao Zedong was not the leader of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party), which was at the time allied with the KMT (Kuomintang). His leadership skills were exceptional and upon breaking off form the main CCP, he used them to the fullest extent by gaining enormous support from the Chinese peasants.
3. Why did civil war break out in China in 1946?
Civil war broke out in China due to the tensions created by the Japanese attack on China in 1937. An attempt at a “United Front” was done but Jiang Jieshi and Mao Zedong could not get along regarding their ideals. Upon the end of WW2, they began to fight for the land recovered from the Japanese and for control of China.
4. Why did Mao become ruler of China in 1949?
He became the ruler of China after defeating the KMT. He managed to defeat the KMT’s forces thanks to his leadership skills, organization of the army, and the equipment and support for the army secured from the USSR and even the US.
5. Why had Mao Zedong emerged as the unchallenged leader of the CCP by 1945?
The main reason Mao became the unchallenged leader was that prior to his leadership, the CCP had never done as well and defeated the KMT until Mao’s involvement. He was appointed by the Soviet Politburo to become the Chairman of the CCP, and this sealed his status as absolute leader.
6. Why was China unstable in the early 20th century?
China was unstable due to the fact that it had been defeated thrice by foreigners. They called this “100 years of humiliation”. The Chinese government (the Qing Dynasty) did not handle the country to the people’s expectations. Moreover, the government was corrupt and the people were taxed heavily while the royal circle lived in luxury. The defeat by the hands of the Japanese was the last straw; the people were tired of the corrupt dynasty and decided to change this.
7. Why do you think that the Long March was later afforded such an important place in Maoist propaganda?
The Long March became a strong port in Maoist Propaganda because it was an example of the people’s loyalty to Mao and the discipline that he taught them. In other words it was simply boasting of his achievement.

China was a country going through many hardships in the early 20th century. Peasants found it difficult to survive under the heavy burden of government taxes. Many civilians were stressed from inflation and didn't take too kindly to the corrupt government officials in office. Young students disliked foreign influences seeing how China experienced great humiliation 100 years prior. These dreadful years came shortly after China was defeated in what was known as the ‘Opium Wars’ that occurred from 1839-1842. China had also experienced a defeat by the Japanese from 1894-1895. Through spheres of influences, industrializing nations such as Britain made profits off of China.
2. Mao Zedong became a Marxist during his time at Beijing University working as a library assistant in 1919. He believed that the only way to bring change to China was through violence. In 1921, the Chinese Communist Party(CCP) was led by two men known as Chen Duxiu and Li Dazhao. Mao was one of the 12 delegates who attended the party’s first National Congress. In 1927, Mao created his own form of communism much different from the Russian comintern in rural areas. He and his followers established a base in the mountains of Jinggangshan seeing how the area was secure. He built a communist Red Army of about 12,000 men by 1928. In 1929, Mao became the secretary of the CCP and called for a land redistribution. This led to poor peasants attacking other peasants who were richer than they were and Mao also purged the Red Army of those he thought were disloyal.
3. A civil war broke out in China between the CCP and the GMD after the end of the second world war. The GMD was under the leadership of Jiang Jieshi who attacked communist forces back in 1941 whom that CCP deemed as unprincipled. Jiang and his government were accused of being dependent on foreign allies and the CCP publicize themselves as true Chinese patriots. At one point, there was an agreement made between Mao Zedong and Jiang Jieshi to put an end to the violence but that agreement was quickly forgotten when the GMD tried to reclaim Manchuria. The GMD attacked communist forces Manchuria while the communist tried to maintain their position. The US had tried many times to settle things down between the two parties but after 1946, the civil war had become too much for the US to handle.
4. It was the civil war of 1946-49 that secured Mao Zedong’s position as ruler of China. Despite Jiang’s help from the US, Mao and his army known as the People’s Liberation Army, were able to put an end to Jiang and his forces. In October of 1949, Mao gave a victory speech at the gate of Heavenly Peace. The crowd cheered him on as the procession of the Red Army soldiers continued.
5. Mao had always believed that “all power grows out of the barrel of a gun” meaning that violence was the solution to solving problems. Mao emerged as the unchallenged leader of the CCP because he wasn't afraid to use violence as a means to get what he wanted. He gave birth to the Red Army in 1928 and by 1946, the Red Army reorganized into what would be known as the People’s Liberation army(PLA) that had put a stop to the GMD. Like Stalin, Mao also purged China of those he thought were disloyal to him.
6. China was unstable in the early 20th century due to a corrupt government and starving peasants. Having been humiliated for so many years by outsiders, students resented all forms of foreign affairs. China had pretty much isolated itself from the rest of the world.
7. I believe that the reason why the long march is afforded such an important place in Maoist propaganda because it was a great example of how Mao was able to overcome the enemy. When the GMD tried to starve the Red Army into surrender, Mao moved his forces to the west where he knew the GMD forces were at its weakest. Yes, only 5,000 out of 100,000 Red Army soldiers survived the long march but it goes to show how loyal the Red Army was to Mao.
