    Russia-Ukraine Battles

    1. The United States has participated in many battles and we have been known to be war heroes just like the victory of the allies in WWII. In the 21st century we are faced with the new face of terrorism, ISIS; a Middle Eastern group that has terrorized many countries and caused many massacres like the recent one of Europe; Paris. The United States has been a form of backbone for the military group fighting of ISIS in the Middle East but Obama has not sent out full out troops to support more. I believe that there is a strong chance that the congress (being full Republican) can approve our military going in to help and destroy this group; if so, the United States should not intervene with the Russia Ukraine battles. Ukraine’s allies accuse Russia of sending in troops and causing problems three months in 2014. The Russian Government denies this but the actions say the opposite. Ukraine is still investigation whether this is something that it is really directly a sent troop to help the rebels or is this something that it really has nothing to do with the government of Russia. The United State’s shouldn’t intervene since it has too much in its plate to deal with right now and we cannot afford anymore enemies and maybe lost of allies as it could potentially lead to a broader and massive war.
    2. Both Russia and Ukraine claim Crimea since it is argued that Crimea is touched by both of the territories (modern territories of Russia and Ukraine). Both countries have formally announced that Crimea belongs to them because of its location. Russia and Ukraine both belonged to many empires who were there once which after many years being separated; it has been an argument over this strip of land. Just like the Jews and the Muslims fighting over the Gaza Strip, Russia and Ukraine both have valid information from ancients that Crimea belongs to them but at the same time they both have similar arguments which comes to be very difficult when concluding which country should have the land to take. Crimea could be considered just a small piece of land to other countries but it is actually very significant as it holds a rich story of how these countries came about.
    3. Crimea was a land that was owned by many empires. The Greeks, Persians, Romans, byzantine, the Genoese and even the Ottoman Empire had dominance and colonized these lands. This was a port for goods as it was a way of coming from the Black sea. The Ottoman empire (now divided into countries like Ukraine and Turkey) fell as it was the last one to hold control over this land. The Russia Empire was on the rise and immediately took over the land as they knew that Russia’s region of Kuban touched Crimea and would potential have the right to take over this land. This was a peninsula which had ancient history from many countries but having Ukraine come from the last Empire who dominated it, they feel undignified and felt the need to fight for this land as it had history of their old roots and it was a good place to have their import and export of goods. Till today Crimea is still undesignated to the countries and it’s used by both countries and the problem it’s still unresolved.
    4. Russia (as land) is located in Europe but its larger part is located in Asia also known as Siberia. The political Russia being located in Europe takes place in the Eastern side of Europe. Ukraine is in the Southern Eastern side of Europe sharing borders with the political implemented Russia. Their location is affected by their culture as both of these countries came from the Ottoman Empire which was once in control of the Middle East up to Europe. Coming from a similar background does imply that they have similar interest maybe not diplomatic but land interests like the great unresolved issue of Crimea. These countries might even be affected by their culture as they hold bonds in agricultural benefits and demands making it a bit difficult to say who is right and who is wrong.

  2. 5. The risks to settleting the dispute between Russia and Ukraine through military intervention is that this could raise into a larger scale and more countries can get involved one after another. The situation that we must be able to consider is that something that needs to be disputed between countries must be done in a ‘civilized’ way and no were near a strong hand of action. If this is taken through military action and intervention, many will parish, and a resolution would just be out of the question. Although many could die, we must consider that Russia is one of the five top countries with the most power in the world. If military intervention is taken, I am positive that the Russian military would have a form of overrule in Ukraine and end the situation as Ukraine’s forces might be no match for the one of Russia. This will cease chaos and end any form of fight. Could this be solved diplomatically? I don’t think so. Both countries have valid arguments over a land like Crimea that it is difficult to step outside and evaluate which one is right and which one is wrong. A diplomatic resolution could be as strong as simply dividing land but sooner than later, it could just be violated and the problem will rise again.
    6. The United States has been allies with Ukraine and has for years been supplying them with weapons. Our secretary of State John Kerry said that there is a strong passion for a diplomatic resolution but the United States just cannot close their eyes and act like nothing is happening when tanks and military forces are coming from Russia to Ukraine. This tension escalated after Russia took over Crimea and Ukraine reported that Russia’s force was supplying rebels with military equipment. I believe that the United States when having to side in a international conflict always looks not at the causes but the effects. We are country of patriotism and we want to always be the guys to save the day! Ukraine could potentially be in danger as military forces of Russia are already established in Crimea. I strongly believe that the United States sides with those who need help but of course in the public’s eyes are not shown why. There has to be some form of potential benefit(s) to this and why they are supporting such a cause.
    7. Since President Obama petitioned for a move on ISIS, the United States should be able to consider a diplomatic action in this situation. ISIS is a world threat as this Russia-Ukraine situation could be settled down. Now, knowing that the United States is a big fan of supporting military action, I could agree that they might also go through that rout because this conflict(s) could potentially lead to a greater war. Germany and the United Kingdom have already met with Ukraine to try to find a diplomatic action and resolve this issue but Russia has not given any result if they’re willing to or not. a country that it’s face of Democracy clashes with Russia’s communism which military action would cause a fight between these two and Ukraine would not even be considered a form of attention. What it is to be considered is that the United States could be in danger if they use military action towards this conflict there would be thousands of dollars already given by the senate’s approval in attacking the terrorist group ISIS. On top of that, if we invest more money in helping Ukraine and Russia does not hold back in attacking, the United States would have to deal with assessing two situations at the same time; a war that has nothing to do with us and a global threat.

    ReplyDelete
  3. 8. I believe that the United States needs to deal with fixing the economy and it is always a problem when there are no funds to support something that could actually be beneficial to the country. I believe that we should be able to consider strongly finding a way possible to have a diplomatic resolution since that could give us time to analyze the situation and find a form of peace of these countries. This also allows us to find Intel on ISIS and put an end to them. I am strongly against being part of any war that happens in Ukraine and Russia but since Ukraine is an Ally, I don’t think it is fair for Russia to attack. Russia did something very wrong and that was taking over the Crimea peninsula without finding a resolution and even so, supplying rebels. This could potentially indicate that Russia is preparing to attack Ukraine with strong weaponry and take down Ukraine from the Inside by supplying these rebels. In that case I could support the united states going in and helping out but I believe their help should be so limited to the point that it wouldn’t be seem like we are fighting Ukraine’s battles since the world has already proclaimed that we are the only ones that could stop the Global threat of ISIS. Russia and Ukraine have a long history and I believe that they should be able to solve without having the western countries intervene but of course behind a face there is always a reason and behind that reason there is always a power and information to obtain.

    1) How should the U.S. react to Russia-Ukraine battles?

    - From what I heard from watching the news, it seems like that the Ukraine are seeking the United States for help in terms of weapons and it looks like the U.S are going to send over 200 millions worth of weapons over to Ukraine, meanwhile Russia isn’t liking what the United States are doing. On the other sides, both France and Germany are working with Russia to come up with somewhat of a peace treaty to end this battle. I feel like the U.S should work with France and Germany to create peace because war is not the solution!

    2) How is it that both countries claim Crimea?

    - Crimea is located South of Ukraine and west of Russia. Russia took over Crimea, Ukraine and Russia are both fighting for the land that kind of stands in the middle. Ukraine threats Russia that a war will begin if the annexation continues. This whole crisis is moving from a political conflict to pure violence, war, military conflict. Russia are annexing Crimea by different parts, slowly. The latest annexation was the take over of the Black sea Peninsula which surrounds Crimea. Russia are trying to annex regions of Crimea which are owned by Ukraine, Ukraine is also sending troops to its border that divides Russia and Crimea, trying to create some sort of defense.

    3) What is the history of Crimea?

    - Crimea has a good history of disputed land and we can take this back all the way back in the ancient world. But skipping all the way to the 20th century, Crimea and parts of Ukraine was a taken over by the Germans in the first World War. After that, in 1917, Crimea became the land of the fighting between Bolsheviks and anti-revolutionaries from Russia that opposed Stalin. The Russian Republics established their control in Crimea causing to end the Greek culture in Crimea since Russia believed that they were against Stalin Revolution acts. Germany came back to Crimea in World War II, causing the Russian Republic to lose its status in Crimea. The fall of the Soviet Union caused hundreds and thousands of Tatars people who were in the mass deportation of Tatars by Stalin, to come back to Crimea. “Thirty-seven years later, in 1991, after the dissolution of the USSR, Ukraine declared its independence . Because of the majority of Russian-speakers in Crimea, there was a move to return the region to Russia, but this was not successful and Crimea is today an Autonomous Republic within Ukraine.” (Black-Sea Crimea)

    4) What part of Europe are Russia and the Ukraine located in? How does their location affect their culture?

    - Since Russia as a country is so big (biggest country in the World) that it takes up most of the Asia continent and some of the European continent. Ukraine is also in the Europe continent sharing borders in Crimea just like Russia. Their culture is affected because of the culture that comes back all the way back in the medieval times whereas Crimea was a land of wars between the “Byzantine and Khazar empires, Kievan Rus (the forerunner of modern Russia) and nomadic tribes such as the Cumans and the Kypchaks.” They were just groups of people with different cultures fighting over the Crimea land. Even now up to this date, the land is still being fought but now its all between Ukraine and Russia.

  5. 5) What are the risks and benefits to settling the dispute between these two countries through military intervention? Could it be solved diplomatically? If so, how?

    - Right now at the moment, other countries like Germany and France wants to come up with a diplomatic solution, as in come up with a peace treaty between both countries. France and Germany chancellors are working with Vladimir Putin because clearly Europe do not want these countries to fight. People might think that both of these nations are getting involved into this whole crisis, but yes they are, and they are getting involved the good way. The benefit of solving this problem diplomatically is that no war will be fought between Russia and Ukraine, meaning no more deaths will be involved (in which thousands of Ukrainians have already died).

    6) How does the U.S. Government decide who to side with in an international conflict?

    - Lets put it this way, Russia is trying to take Crimea away from Ukraine, they want Crimea to be a part of the Russian Federation, but as we know, Russia had once controlled Crimea before after world war II but I’m not sure why Russia wants Crimea so bad. The United States government is in favor of Ukraine, the whole funding process of helping in Ukraine (as i stated below on question 7) is all decided in the house of congress, they work together to come up with what else they could do to help Ukraine in multiple ways. Ukraine is the country who is in need for help, since they are the one who is being attacked by Russia. They need help in terms of reconstructing a whole new “Economic Stabilization, Reform and Growth”(The White House).

    7) Do you think the U.S. will favor diplomacy or military action in this situation?

    - As I stated above in question one, the United States seems to favor this situation in terms of military rather than diplomatic life France and Germany. Meanwhile, the United States is not going to support Ukraine just in Terms of military. During the whole Crimea crisis, millions of citizens lost their homes and the us government is funding on to help these citizens. Overall, United States is loaning one billion of dollars to Ukraine to help establish a new reconstruction needs to its citizens. This is what the goals of the United States are in terms of helping the Ukraine, from the White House: “The United States is firmly committed to supporting Ukraine as it works to establish security and stability, respond to humanitarian and reconstruction needs, conduct democratic elections and carry out constitutional reforms, restore its economy, and combat corruption. Along with our international partners, including the IMF, the United States is committed to supporting Ukraine’s reform agenda while also ensuring that Ukrainians are able to determine their future without intimidation or outside coercion.” (The White House)

    8) Which option or combination of the two do you think will be the most effective in ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia? Explain your answer.

    - Yes, what Russia is doing right now at the moment by taking Crimea away from Ukraine is wrong, at the same time, Crimea was once a part of Russia back in after World War II. I think many nations are in favor of a diplomatic solution must be created, we all know that Ukraine is seeking the U.S for weapons, but war is simply not the answer to this crisis. The U.S. does not want to help in terms of military but they also want to help Ukraine as a nation, they want to help them rebuild their economy by loaning very large amounts of currency to Ukraine. On the other side, we have France and Germany working together with the president of Russia to come up with a diplomatic solution to end this, so might as well come up with a diplomatic solution, its clear here that war will not be the answer here.

    1) How should the U.S. react to Russia-Ukraine battles?
Reading on the internet it seems that the U.S is concerned with the troops that haven't came back from Ukraine. The U.S should react at a careful manner because the U.S always gets into someones business that always back to us. I understand this is an ally but we need protection here, shouldn't you do this first?

    2) How is it that both countries claim Crimea?
To me the countries claim Crimea because of its location, from Ukraine its located south of it and from Russia it is from the west. Over time both of the sides were fighting for this piece of land and as of right now it's controlled by Russians but founded by Ukraine.

    3) What is the history of Crimea?
I would call Crimea the land without peace, this is because it seems this piece of land was always in something. This is going all the way back to greek times all the way till now. Groups like Roman Empire, Byzantine empire took power. Now it wages with Russia and Ukraine, but it's unfair because of the power that Russia portrays.

    4) What part of Europe are Russia and the Ukraine located in? How does their location affect their culture?
Well both Russia and Ukraine are apart of the European sides. But it's loft sided because Russia takes most the space since it's the biggest land space in the world. This affects the culture because dating back to greek times where culture's would clash to get land, just like how Russia and Ukraine are.

  9. 5) What are the risks and benefits to settling the dispute between these two countries through military intervention? Could it be solved diplomatically? If so, how?
A major risk that can happen is Russia turns around and wants to start a battle with us. That could make it worse for us because the U.S already has enough problems,so dealing with this is all a big headache. A benefit that could help us that Ukraine can help us out more, because I haven't heard Ukraine do anything positive to help us and also with the military help, maybe they can stand for themselves. And I think it's too late for a diplomatic , since the U.S are already looking at battle.

    6) How does the U.S. Government decide who to side with in an international conflict?
The U.S decides on who needs the most help or who is in danger, in most cases. Since Ukraine economy aren't high and there soldiers may not be skill; which Obama wants to send supplies and troops there. Also why is Russia worried about a little place where they have a huge nation with a great economy, just not right. U.S is suppose to be the law and order around the world, this is why there trying help in a time of need.

    7) Do you think the U.S. will favor diplomacy or military action in this situation?
Well with the problems going on around the world and the way the U.S is, I can see the U.S waiting out till the last moment to bring military action. Obama isn't just going to put soldiers out in battle without knowing what we are dealing with. But if it comes down to it, yes we would see military action and with the help of France and Germany it is possible.

    8) Which option or combination of the two do you think will be the most effective in ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia? Explain your answer.
Well I know the U.S is only trying to help Ukraine as a army but as a nation as well. And I wouldn't trust Russia because of what they already did Ukraine, with past problems. I think maybe France and Germany could do something, with the U.S too because they were part of the League of Nations. Trying to come up with kind of settlement to make sure all sides are clear.

  11. 1. The U.S questions whether they should provide military support or not. Reading a quote that said something about how a diplomatic resolution would be best, but how you cannot just simply close your eyes to a tank, I agree. Steven Pifer, a senior from Bookings institutions believes the U.S should send military assistance to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia, therefore limiting any further aggression. Others simply think that if the U.S sends their assistance to help Ukraine that this would only “worsen the violence by prompting a larger counter-response from Russia.” I believe the U.S should just keep to ourselves and stop getting involved in foreign affairs.

    2. Crimea is south of Ukraine and west of Russia. This piece of land was annexed by Russia in 1783 but handed to Ukraine under the soviet leader Nikita Khrushcev. Therefore, since this land is between both, they shared through some treaty where the Russians get to keep their naval base there. The population of Crimea is made of mostly Russians but with a high Ukraine minority.

    3. The piece of land named Crimea was always the land being fought for. Going all the way back to ancient times, to Germans in the first world war and now the dispute between the Russians and Ukraine. This country seems to never have a break when it comes to peace.

4.The location of Russia and Ukraine, I would argue Russia is more Eastern Europe (since it takes up most of Asia) and Ukraine would be more on the border of Eastern/Central Europe. The difference in cultures would cause them to clash a lot due to the very different traditions. Russia would have more of an Asian influence on things and Ukraine I believe would have more of a European influence to things, causing both ethnicities to clash over Crimea like they do now.

    ReplyDelete
  12. 5. The risk of settling these disputes through military intervention would be causing the death toll to rise. There would be more violence, and I fear if to many countries get involved with military intervention it could cause a huge war (not another world war but to that extent). The benefits of military intervention could be controlling the aggression of the Soviet Union and most likely ending the war but then I believe this would be another risk, causing uneasy tension between the two countries because of a defeat. If the French and Germans work quick enough to settle this dispute with a diplomatic resolution, it could possibly be done. From what it appears, none of Europe wants this conflict to continue and if they work together I believe they can come up with a resolution unless they all have peanuts for brains.

    6. I believe the U.S government always decides to help out the “little guys” in situation like these. In this case the U.S would be going against an ally (Russia) in order to limit the aggression and kills being added up from this conflict. This is my opinion of how U.S gets involved between choosing whom to help in international conflict. I also believe they stick there nose in business it has no place belonging.

    7. In one source I read, it said they don’t believe a diplomatic resolution is possible due to how Russia is handling things already. Like I said before, you cannot expect to shake hands on a diplomatic resolution with a tank. But I believe the U.S would more than happily choose a diplomatic resolution because there’s always the possibility that Russia will send larger numbers to fight if the U.S sends military assistance to help Ukraine.

    8. This is a tricky question. I believe it will take time to come up with a successful diplomatic solution, by then a ton of Ukraine soldiers would be dead. So sure sending military assistance could cause Russia to send larger numbers, but the time it takes to end the war peacefully a lot of people could be dead. So I think they should send military assistance only to keep the Russians aggression contained while the other countries of Europe work on a diplomatic solution to end the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

    Russia-Ukraine Battles

    1) How should the U.S. react to Russia-Ukraine battles?
The way I think that the U.S should react to Russia-Ukraine battles is that they should just let them do what they have to do because it seems to me that Ukraine is getting what they need such as weapons and etc. while Russia just sits around getting all mad. The U.S always want to be the peacemaker I think they should just stay out of it.

    2) How is it that both countries claim Crimea?
Both countries claim Crimea because it is land. Russia and Ukraine are fighting over it. There were threats from Ukraine to Russia. Ukraine wanted war if the “annexations” would keep happening. The reason why Russia is doing that is because they want the land but with Ukraines group of people it isnt going to work.

    3) What is the history of Crimea?
The history of Crimea began with a “annexation” by the Russian Empire in 1783. Crimea was a land that had been owned by many countries. It was fought between Bolsheviks and anti-revolutionaries that were from Russia. They were in the led til Germany had came in and took them out of their place. In todays speaking about Crimea is now an “ Autonomous Republic of Crimea” in Ukraine which is the black-sea crimea.

    4) What part of Europe are Russia and the Ukraine located in? How does their location affect their culture?
Well Russia is a big country so it takes up some part of Europe. Ukraine is also part of Europe continent. Both of the locations affects their culture because both came from the Ottoman Empire that was controlled by the Middle East back then. There were a lot of countries that were fighting but now it was just Russia and Ukraine.

    5) What are the risks and benefits to settling the dispute between these two countries through military intervention? Could it be solved diplomatically? If so, how?
The risks to settling the dispute between these two countries through military intervention will just lead to more violence. In my opinion I think that more countries will want to join the military intervention to help kill each other. A benefit to settling the dispute could help us because Ukraine will help us more. I think that it might be a little late to solved diplomatically, thats because there was battles already going on.

    6) How does the U.S. Government decide who to side with in an international conflict?
The U.S government decided who to side with an international conflict because the U.S is in favor of Ukraine. Ukraine needs all the help that they can get. They have been getting attacked by Russia because of the land “Crimea” the Russians want is to bad. The U.S always help the people that are in need so that is how the U.S gov. decides in my opinion.

    7) Do you think the U.S. will favor diplomacy or military action in this situation?
In my opinion I do think that the U.S will favor diplomacy and military action in this situation. I say that because the U.S is always trying to find a way to help the people in need such as Ukraine. They aren't just going to help them with the military action they are lending them money as well and etc. But the U.S would have more trouble in dealing with the reactions of Russia because of what they are doing.

    8) Which option or combination of the two do you think will be the most effective in ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia? Explain your answer.
The way I see this is that what Russia has been doing to Ukraine is a bad thing but at the same time you have to look at it this way “crimea” was once part of Russia. So Russia is upset about this and now that the U.S is helping Ukraine it is just boiling their blood. The U.S just wants Ukraine to have a good economy. That is how I see it when it comes to Russia-Ukraine.

    1) How should the U.S. react to Russia-Ukraine battles?
The U.S. seems to be on Ukraine’s side. The situation between Russia and the Ukraine has them thinking whether or not they should intervene. The U.S. is in talks of coming to the Ukraine’s aid by providing the military with supplies. Secretary of State John Kerry supports the idea of helping the Ukraine’s military. Kerry said, “We want a diplomatic resolution, but we cannot close our eyes to tanks that are crossing the border from Russia and coming in to Ukraine,”. I believe if the U.S. wants to intervene in the battles between Russia and Ukraine, then they should be cautious because it can put the U.S. in danger.

    2) How is it that both countries claim Crimea?
Crimea is a peninsula and it is connected to mainland Ukraine by a narrow strip of land. Russia plans to build a bridge in order to be connected to Crimea. Even though Crimea is connected to Ukraine, Russia still wants to take control over it.

    3) What is the history of Crimea?
Even though Crimea originated from Ukraine, Russia wanted to acquire it. The Crimean war happened between 1853-56 and more than half a million people died. The war was between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. Apparently, the Crimean War was one of the reasons of why the First World War happened. Crimea became part of the Soviet Union in 1921, and was mainly populated by Muslim Tatars. Joseph Stalin, who was leader of the Soviet Union at the time, deported the Tatars by the masses at the end of World War Two because Stalin thought they were collaborating with the Nazis. Ukraine acquired Crimea in 1954 when Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev gave the Peninsula to Ukraine.

    4) What part of Europe are Russia and the Ukraine located in? How does their location affect their culture?
Russia and the Ukraine are part of the eastern part of Europe. Russia is also part of Asia due to its large size. Ukraine and Russia have different aspects in culture. Ukraine is influenced by Christianity by the Byzantine Empire and the early slavic alphabet. In Ukraine there was also control from Poland and Lithuania. When Ukraine was under Polish control, there was more of a Roman Catholic presence.

    5) What are the risks and benefits to settling the dispute between these two countries through military intervention? Could it be solved diplomatically? If so, how?
I think that the risks are greater than the benefits in the case of military intervention. Vladimir Putin told the European Parliament that “all-out war” could happen if the U.S. decides to supply the Ukrainian government in Kiev with arms. President Obama said that it is possibly that the Ukraine will be supplied with arms by the U.S. if diplomacy fails. That means that the U.S. is also thinking about solving these issues diplomatically. I think trying to solve problems diplomatically is the safest route. U.S. can negotiate with both Russia and Ukraine in a fashion that does not involve military intervention.

    6) How does the U.S. Government decide who to side with in an international conflict?
I believe that the U.S. tries to see the bigger picture and who is in the wrong. In this case, the U.S. wants to side with Ukraine because they aren’t at fault. Russia is at fault because they are trying to take away what is not theirs. The reason why the U.S. wants to supply Ukraine with arms is because they need help and the U.S. supports Ukraine.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 7) Do you think the U.S. will favor diplomacy or military action in this situation?
President Obama says that if the diplomacy route fails, the military intervention will be plan b. After reading that in an article, I believe that the U.S. will favor diplomacy over military action. The U.S. can be put in danger if military action is taken. Even Vladimir Putin warned the U.S. about supplying Ukraine. Taking diplomatic action is safer than taking military action at this point.

    8) Which option or combination of the two do you think will be the most effective in ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia? Explain your answer.
I believe that diplomatic action is the most effective solution in ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. If diplomatic efforts are put forth, then violence would be less likely to happen. It can be risky for the U.S. to supply arms to Ukraine because they had already been warned by Russia and also a war can break out. I think that it will take a longer amount of time to settle the disputes between Ukraine and Russia if a war were to occur. That is why I say handing this situation diplomatically and not with military intervention is the best way to go.

  16. 1) How should the U.S. react to Russia-Ukraine battles?
From what I’ve seen and heard in the news lately, the U.S. is doing what it does best: intervening! The U.S. is sending weapons and resources to the Ukrainian side. The United States is facilitating another war outside of U.S. soil, giving them “ways to defend themselves” but also giving them confidence to continue violence. Other European states like Germany are trying to convince Russia to stop violence and resolve the issue diplomatically. I feel the U.S. should take the other European States’ course of action instead of sending weapons.
    2) How is it that both countries claim Crimea?
Russia claims that Crimea is rightfully Russian thanks to the ethnicity and language of the people in Eastern Crimea. Ukraine claims Crimea as part of Ukraine since it was given back to Ukraine in 1954 and Crimea is more Ukrainian than Russian thanks to the repopulation of Crimea after the deportation of the Tatars.
    3) What is the history of Crimea?
Crimea was an independent sovereign state at the beginning of the 20th Century. However it was dragged into the Russian Revolution since the White Army took refuge in Crimea. After the White Army was removed, Crimea became a part of the Soviet Union. Nazi Germany occupied Ukraine and Crimea, and after the end of Nazi occupation Stalin ordered every Tatar to be deported for collaborating with the Nazis. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the deported Tatars tried to return to their land but it was now occupied by Russians and Ukrainians. They struggled to fit again into their land but their right to Crimea remains in dispute.
    4) What part of Europe are Russia and the Ukraine located in? How does their location affect their culture?
Russia is in Eastern Europe, as is the Ukraine. From their proximity to each other it means that their cultures will be rather similar. Russian and Ukrainian culture is very similar, although Ukrainian culture has a more Balkan touch to it thanks to its proximity to countries such as Romania and Moldova. The languages spoken by both countries are similar, however they are separate languages (Russian and Ukrainian).
    5) What are the risks and benefits to settling the dispute between these two countries through military intervention? Could it be solved diplomatically? If so, how?
The risk with military intervention would be that it could escalate into a larger war or a world war even. The benefit could be that Russia, a danger to many nations according to the U.S., could be weakened if the result was the defeat of Russia.
The main risk with ending the conflict diplomatically, is that a peace settlement with a great power like Russia would mean that they could “get away with their goals” as part of the treaty so as to keep it happy. This would in turn mean that either Ukraine or Crimea would be unhappy with the terms and thus spark further conflict.

  17. 6) How does the U.S. Government decide who to side with in an international conflict?
Usually, the U.S. sides with whoever complies with their ideas, therefore whoever favors democracy and freedom of speech. Moreover, another factor in deciding who to side with in a conflict lies in who is the most convenient for the U.S. political and economical agenda.
    7) Do you think the U.S. will favor diplomacy or military action in this situation?
Given what I know about the U.S., and how war is a business for them, I think they will initially favor military action. However, afterwards with international pressure diplomacy will be favored.
    8) Which option or combination of the two do you think will be the most effective in ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia? Explain your answer.
Given how Russia is a powerful threat to several other countries, military action COULD weaken the Russians if the Ukrainians won. However, wars and peace settlements tend to make way for future wars. Diplomacy would also set up for a future war if one side remains unhappy with the terms for peace. I’d say diplomacy is the safer route. However, diplomacy must be very carefully implemented to prevent conflict in the future.

  18. 1. How should the U.S. react to Russia-Ukraine Battles?
The U.S have two options. Either they can supply Ukraine with military weapons or not supply Ukraine with military supplies and stay out of the Russia-Ukraine Battles. Some of the Americans believe that if the U.S gave Ukraine military weapons it will create a better relationship between the two countries. However, if the U.S gives Ukraine military weapons then there will be more violence. If the U.S does not give the Ukraine military weapons then the U.S will stay neutral. However, if they don’t then Ukraine will feel that betrayed and could possibly go after the U.S for not helping them. I believe that the U.S should not give Ukraine any military weapons. I believe this because even though Ukraine will be mad at the U.S for not helping them, you got to remember, Ukraine needs weapons from the U.S, so if Ukraine tries to attack the U.S then the U.S will win because the U.S will have the weapons.
    2. How is it that both countries claim Crimea?
Both Russia and Ukraine claim Crimea because The Crimean Peninsula extends into the Black Sea, which is attached to the Ukrainian mainland. However, in the east, it almost touches Russia. Which is why Russia claims that it is theirs because it is right next to Russia. It should be rightfully Ukraine’s because it is attached to the mainland. Russia also claims it’s there because in 2010 Ukraine and Russia signed a treaty saying that Russia could extend their naval presence in Sevastopol until 2042.
    3. What is the history of Crimea?
Crimea has been through many rulers. Russia, Ukraine, Germans, and the Bolsheviks. During the First World War, the Germans had control over Crimea. After the First World War Crimea was being fought between the anti-revolutionaries and the Bolsheviks against Russia. When the Russians took control of Crimea from the Bolsheviks Russians stopped the Greek cultural. Since then, Russia and Ukraine have been fighting for Crimea.
    4. What part of Europe are Russia and the Ukraine located in? How does their location affect their culture?
Ukraine is located in the Eastern part of Europe. And Russia is located in the Europe and in Asia because it is huge. Their location effects their culture because this location had many owners. These owners had different cultures. The people who lived I this location believe in the cultures that they were born up with which of course would cause a lot of tension because the different cultures have different belief.

    Russia-Ukraine Battles

    1) How should the U.S. react to Russia-Ukraine battles?
The secretary of State John Kerry said “ We want a diplomatic resolution, we cannot close our eyes to tanks that are crossing the border from Russia and coming to the Ukraine”. From this statement it seems that the US will be aiding Ukraine since it is the country that is being attacked by Russia and also the white house has discussed providing the Ukraine with military supplies. I think that the US should stay out of it because providing aid to the Ukraine will sabotage the US relationship will Russia. But from the looks of things it seems that the US doesn't care and are still going to help the Ukraine protect themselves seem to e the right thing to do.

    2) How is it that both countries claim Crimea?
Both countries claim Crimea because crimea is located in a place where it is touching both countries. (south of the Ukraine and west of Russia). The thing is Russia and Ukraine doesn't want to share the country but claim it for itself. Russia is trying to annex Crimea started a political conflict between the two countries.

    3) What is the history of Crimea?
In Crimea’s early year it had been colonized by the Greeks, Romans, Hun, the Byzantine Empire and etc. Than during the 15th century it was a vassal state for the Ottoman Empire.
When the Crimean war broke out between Russia and the Britain alliance with France, Sardinia and Turkey in 1853-56 the peninsula was left in ruins. Then the Russian Civil war broke out which used Crimea as the main battleground of the Tsarists, anarchist forces and Bolsheviks The Bolsheviks won an took Crimea made it part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic ( RSFSR). In 19944 when Stalin was in power he removed the Crimean population and place it in Central Asia. Then in 1954 Russia new leader Nikita Khrushchev move the Crimea (RSFSR) to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. During 1991 after the Soviet Union collapsed Crimea became part of the Ukraine. Crimea is made up of 58 percent Russians and 24 percent Ukrainians and 12 percent of Tatars that returned from their exile during the early years when the population was moved to central Asia.
    4) What part of Europe are Russia and the Ukraine located in? How does their location affect their culture?
Russia is located in Asia, because it is so big it swallows up most of Asia. and Ukraine is located in Eastern Europe. Their location affect their culture because Asia is more of a communist place while the Ukraine has more of a Muslim influence it due to where it is located.

  20. 5. What are the risks and benefits to settling the dispute between these two countries through military intervention? Could it be solved diplomatically? If so, how?
One of the risks to settling the dispute between these two countries through military intervention is that lots of people involved could possibly die. However, the outcome would be is that there would be a final winner of the Crimea. I don’t think it could be solved diplomatically. Germany and France want to create a peace treaty. However, there was already a treaty create and it was broken. I honestly think that both Ukraine and Russia need to fight it out and whoever wins is it owner of Crimea.
    6. How does the U.S. Government decide who to side with in an international conflict?
In reality the U.S congress decides who to side with in an international. It’s all about the votes. I think that the U.S government shouldn’t even decide with anyone because it’s their battle. I think the U.S government should decide on who to side with based off of how the economy is doing. I think it would be a good thing to help out an economy get on their feet. However, I would rather help an economy who is strong so when I need help they would already have the weapons and I could rely on them.
    7. Do you think the U.S. will favor diplomacy or military action in this situation?
I think the U.S will favor a diplomacy action in this situation. I think this because it took Obama so long just to take military action on Isis. I believe that Obama is a guy that does not like war or any kind of violence. I think that he likes to settle disagreements with deals. I don’t think he will favor a military action.
    8. Which option or combination of the two do you think will be the most effective in ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia? Explain your answer.
The option I think will be the most effective in ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia is just to let them fight it out in war. I think that Ukraine should get their military weapons from a place other than the U.S. If they do a peace treaty they are just going to break it. If they fight for Crimea and whoever wins is the rightful ruler of Crimea.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 5) What are the risks and benefits to settling the dispute between these two countries through military intervention? Could it be solved diplomatically? If so, how?
risk of setting the conflict with military intervention is that many of the civilians will suffer and Crimea will be in ruins just like it was during it early years being the battle ground for the Crimean war between Russia and the allied force and so on. it would be more of a disadvantage for both sides. I guess there is a chance it can be solved diplomatically if both sides are willing to stop the battles and try working on negotiating.

    6) How does the U.S. Government decide who to side with in an international conflict?
The US Government decide who to side with in an international conflict base on what they can gain in return in helping that country. If the Us is looking to gain a resource and the country that they side on “just happens” to have that resource that either way if the curty win the war or battle they get what they want it is a win win for the US. for example Afghanistan which contains a lot of oil. The question is what can they US gain from the Ukraine from aiding them?

    7) Do you think the U.S. will favor diplomacy or military action in this situation?
From what I have seen from the US politicians it seems that they are more in favor of military since the US is supplying the Ukraine with military weapons and also they say they can't let sit and watch Russia attack the Ukraine without doing anything.

    8) Which option or combination of the two do you think will be the most effective in ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia? Explain your answer.
To be honest I have no idea. But if it was up to me I wouldn't send weapons to the Ukraine I would send enough troops to hold both sides at a stalemate and force them to do negotiations with each other to end this conflict. instead of siding with any of the two countries.

    1. I think that the United States should just leave the Russia-Ukraine battles alone and just let them fight alone. If the United States joins in then things could get worse and the other countries could start to join in as well. If the United States stays out of it and let it be then we don’t have to do anything with those two countries. The U.S. should just focus on themselves instead of trying to intervene in other battles, this is how battles turn into wars because of countries joining in.

    2. Both Russia and Ukraine claim Crimea because it is in between both countries. Crimea lies south of Ukraine and west of Russia; it also connects to both countries. Russia and Ukraine are sort of in competition and want that piece of land but the problem is both countries can’t have it, only one can. If they can’t come up come up with an agreement then I think that they will just have to fight it out.

    3. The history of Crimea is one with a lot of wars and battles over this piece of land all since the Greek times. Countries such as Germany, Russia, Ukraine, and Bolsheviks have all been fighting for this piece of land over decades. Crimea has Russians as the biggest population following the Ukraine’s which is why both are fighting for the piece of land today.

    4. Both Russia and Ukraine are located in the eastern part of Europe and Russia takes up land in Asia as well since it’s so massive. These two countries come from an Ottoman Empire which was in the Middle East. The Ottoman Empire has a culture where you must fight for land or fight for you believe is yours and both Russia and Ukraine come from the same culture which is why there fighting over Crimea.

    5. Military Intervention would mean that another country would have to join and there could be a probability that more countries would want to join as well thus stating a huge war which is not a good idea. It could also settle things as well to where one country would have the land but over time the other country would eventually try and fight for it again. I think that Russia and Ukraine should just have half and half of Crimea or the fight over that piece of land will just continue.

    6. I think that the U.S government decides who to side with in an international conflict through congress and they have special meeting where they talk and do that sort of thing. I also believe that the U.S will join the country that is most in need of help because the U.S is always trying to be the hero and save everyone.

    7. I think that the U.S favors military action more than diplomacy but I think the U.S will wait and see if things get worse and if it does than most likely we will use military action. The U.S will help out Ukraine in anything they need because they are an ally. So for now the U.S might try diplomacy but then use military action if things get worse.

    8. I don’t really know but I think that Russia and Ukraine could both have half and half of Crimea. The U.S. could talk to Germany and France to see if all three can come up with one good solution. The last solution I have is that both countries could just fight it out and the winner takes over the territory but that would be like the last option if there is no diplomatic solution that can work.

    Russia-Ukraine Battle
    1) How should the U.S. react to Russia-Ukraine battles?
The United States should react to the Russia- Ukraine battles in a calm way. From what it seems like the U.S. is going to help them out by sending weapons thats worth over 150 million to help. The United States has been in many situations like this where, there were in need of help, so it would be an “act of kindness” if they support this Ukraine battle. Also, they have to consider the Russians because they have strong relationship. Meanwhile, all of this is happening Germany and France are working together to make peace settlement for this war because its not a good thing. People should be rational and think about how bad the economy will be if this war doesn't leave any bad results.
    2) How is it that both countries claim Crimea?
-Crimea is located in a place where both countries are adjacent. So its kind of touching the both of them, Also Russia ,believes that the country is more developed based on their culture so it suppose to be “rightfully” theirs to own.
    3) What is the history of Crimea?
-In the beginning of the 20th century Crimea was an independent “sovereign state” ,then it was just kind born into the Russian revolution ever since the “White army”took control over the refugee camps. Crimea was also one of reasons why the first world war had happen. It was part of the Soviet Union where at the time the leader was Joseph Stalin. Majority of crimea was populated with “muslims tatars”, these people were deported because Stalin thought they had collaborated with the Nazis. That was a rise towards war. Crimea was acquired by the Ukraine,
    4) What part of Europe are Russia and the Ukraine located in? How does their location affect their culture?
-Russia is located the Eastern part of Europe and is also a part of Asia. Ukraine is also located in the eastern part of Europe and is also a part of Asia. Their location had an affect on their culture because both of aspects are different. They both have different beliefs, because for Ukraine has been influenced by the Christianity. Russia has more of the asian influence.

  25. 5) What are the risks and benefits to settling the dispute between these two countries through military intervention? Could it be solved diplomatically? If so, how?
    - So a risks at this point could be the safety of its military because they are dealing with a possible expansion of war. Many other countries could jump into this war. Benefits, would be solving the military issues of weapons.
    6) How does the U.S. Government decide who to side with in an international conflict?
-In my opinion, I believe that the U.S. really does try to sees who is in the wrong. For this case, the U.S. wants to side with Ukraine because its really not there fault. Russia is wrong for this because they are trying to take away something that doesn't belong to them. In a new reporters opinion. “The reason why the U.S. wants to supply Ukraine with arms is because they need help and the U.S. supports Ukraine.”

    7) Do you think the U.S Since ISIS. will favor diplomacy or military action in this situation?

Since ISIS is a world threat towards the U.S and other countries that could be a solution in regards to the diplomatic action. So a risks at this point could be the safety of its military because they are dealing with a terrorist group. In regards to the diplomatic action. The U.S could possibly be in depth in a period of time because they would have to spend thousands of dollars. Most likely the US will favor in military action in this situation,

    8) Which option or combination of the two do you think will be the most effective in ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia? Explain your answer.
-I think personally Russia would end the conflict because, they seem more aggressive in owning crimea. They really are at fault of this whole thing ,because they are trying to take something that is not theirs. Also, Russia is more “stabled” ,Ukraine had to ask the U.S for help so it must mean they running out of options.

    1. How should the U.S. react to Russia-Ukraine battles?
-- John Kerry said that “U.S. cannot ignore Russian fighters in Ukraine” and “We want a diplomatic resolution, but we cannot close our eyes to tanks that are crossing the border from Russia and coming in to Ukraine.” Base on the statements above, the U.S. will be helping Ukraine by supplying military supplies and supports. I think the U.S. will only stand on side to provide help but also there is a chance that U.S. will step in and play a role.

    2. How is it that both countries claim Crimea?
-- Both countries claim Crimea because Russia want to build a bridge between so it can have connection with Crimea. On the other side, Ukraine already had connection with Crimea and now Russia want to step in and take charge of it.

    3. What is the history of Crimea?
-- Crimea is a peninsula from the northern coast on Black Sea and is a self-government from Russian-speaking republic of Ukraine. In early history, Crimea had been colonized and occupied repeatedly by the Greek, Roman, Huns, and the Byzantine Empire. Also during the 13th century, Crimea were occupied by the Tatars. In the 15th century, the Crimean Khanate became a vassal state in the Ottoman Empire but has its own power and claim territory, the Russia’s Caspian-Volga region. In 1783, Crimea was conquered by the Russian. The Crimean War of 1953-56, Russia was alliance with Great Britain, France, Sardinia and Turkey to fought against Crimea and it took place at the peninsula. By the end, Crimea was ruins. During the Russian Revolution, Crimea had a hard fight against with the Tsarist, Bolshevik and the anarchist force. After the Bolshevik victory, Crimea became part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR). In 1994, Joseph Stalin put the entire Crimean Tatar population into Central Asia and some part of Russia. In 1954, Nikita Khrushchev transferred the Crimean from RSFSR to the Ukraine Soviet Socialist Republic. Later on in 1991, Crimea became part Ukraine. 58 percent of Russian, 24 percent of Ukrainians and 12 percent Tatars made up Crimea population.

    4. What part of Europe are Russia and the Ukraine located in? How does their location affect their culture?
-- Russia and the Ukraine located in the Eastern part of Europe. Russia is part of Asia and part of Europe. Russia and Ukraine had different culture aspects. Ukraine was influence by Christianity and later Ukraine control from Poland and Lithuania. Under the Polish influence, Ukraine was more of Roman Catholic.

  27. 5. What are the risks and benefits to settling the dispute between these two countries through military intervention? Could it be solved diplomatically? If so, how?
-- The risks to settling the dispute between these two countries through military interventions are a lot of civilians will suffer and Crimea will just be ruins. When the two countries actually went into war, lots of disadvantages will exist. But also there is a chance where the two countries can solve diplomatically only if both sides are willing to stop and talk.

    6. How does the U.S. Government decide who to side with in an international conflict?
-- The U.S. Government decided who to side with in an international conflict by depending on the benefits that will gain from the country they help. If the country had the resources that the U.S. is looking for now, there is a big chance the U.S. will step in and help.

    7. Do you think the U.S. will favor diplomacy or military action in this situation?
-- I think the U.S. will favor military action in this situation because from the news the U.S. will supply Ukraine weapons and will provide military forces if its needed.

    8. Which option or combination of the two do you think will be the most effective in ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia? Explain your answer.
-- I will not choose any of the option because I want peace and not battles or wars. If I had the power, I would make both countries sit down and sign a peace treaty or something that will keep both countries under control and promise no more war.
