Plan of Investigation

You will be responsible for writing a draft of your Plan of Investigation for this week's blog. Please note that you MUST upload this to turnitin.com AND print out a copy to hand in on Monday at the beginning of class.

Next week I will begin conducting short conferences with each one of you. This is a VERY important investigation and must be taken seriously. It is impossible for you to write your investigation if you do not have a solid research question and notes. PLEASE read the two handouts for assistance in this process - they are there to help you. Remember, this is NOT a research paper - it is an investigation.

Also, please be aware that you will be graded with the IB Markband - this is in your packets that was distributed to you a month ago.

Question: What politcal and economic effect did China have with the Chinese Communist Party(CPC)?

This investigation talks about the ecominc and politcal effects in China when the Chiense Communist Party(CPC) lead. To assess this, the investigation will prelude the power of Mao Zedong and the leadership that was form to make China succesul; the political stands for example the long march were influenced; the diffrences that Mao had with the Cheif of state Liu Shao-Ch'I and the party's secretary Teng Hsiao-Ping, all three had different ways of solving problems. Library books, will give evidence to how economic and political effects played a major rule with the Communist Party, for example "Prelude to Revolution" by Richard Baum; which gives insight more on Mao Tse-Tung and what he did; and mainly more focused on the political view. The "China Under Communism" by Micheal G. Kort talks mainly about the "economic reforms" that improved the life in China.

The investigation will not go into the KMT, and the issues that they had to face and had to handle it. This investigation is strictly focused on the Communist Party point of view.

The modern Catholic Church has been an advocate for peace, understanding, tolerance, and forgiveness. The Church has displayed dismay at the regimes of the likes of Hitler and Mussolini, yet the Spanish Catholic Church sided with Francisco Franco and his fascist aims. My historical investigation will use various historical books of historical, religious, and political character to analyze the situation of the Catholic Church in Spain between the year 1930 until the early years of the Spanish Civil War, in order to answer the research question: “Why did the Spanish Catholic Church side with Franco prior to, and during the Spanish Civil War?”

I will acquire evidence from books directly on the matter of the Spanish Civil War and the Catholic Church, on the views of the Catholic Church and the Vatican about Fascism, on the actions of the Church supporting the spread of democracy, and to scan for any possible minor details missed I shall use more general books on the history of the Catholic Church in Spain.

Question: How successful of a leader was Chiang Kai-Shek compared to Sun Yat-Sen?

This investigation evaluates how successful of a leader Chiang Kai-Shek was compared to his predecessor, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. In order to determine such successfulness, one must assess the leadership of both Chiang Kai-Shek and Sun Yat-Sen ; how effective they were in dealing with the communists, how effective they were in leading the Kuomintang, and how effective they in gaining the favor of the people. In this essay, several books will be used to support this investigation, two of them being “Sun Yat-Sen: Frustrated Patriot” by C. Martin Wilbur and “Fires of the Dragon” by David Kaplan. C. Martin Wilbur’s “Sun Yat- Sen: Frustrated Patriot”, evaluates Sun Yat-Sen; hard working and patriotic as he was and how determined he was to improve in country. David Kaplan’s “Fires of the Dragon” briefly discusses Chiang Kai-Shek and the Kuomintang and their involvement in the murder of Henry Liu.

Franco’s Spanish Reign was far more a triumph for the republicans but a travesty for those who were low-ranged, degraded citizens in Spain but also in the colonies. The colonies began to rebel against Franco’s power because they didn’t consider his reign fair; from this began the event known as the Spanish civil war. For the Historical Investigation, I will be diving into a variety of books which give me an excellent presentation of the civil war itself, Franco’s power, the splinting of Spain and the thoughts and idea of the Spanish empire. I will need to dive into this load of amazing information to critically analyze the important points of the books to guide me into answering my research question, “How did the Spanish civil war affect the Power of The Spanish Empire?” I will acquire information about the ideas of the Spanish Empire, How Franco dealt with the Spanish civil war and what Spain was doing during these troublesome times. The books that I have back each other up on minor details that one may not have but the other one does which is perfect and shows that I have all the information needed to have an effective and strong start to my Internal assessment.

Although there is information about the Alliance of Hitler and Mussolini with Franco, I will not go into dept so much with these other characters although they will appear because some pieces of the Spanish civil war refer to them.

To what extent did the FLN play a part in the Algerian civil war?

The investigation will focus on the extent the FLN had played a role in the Algerian civil war. The FLN was accused of hiding "secret funds" from the Algerians. They would also criticized the state because they felt that the FLN was superior to every other group or nation. " Algeria 1830-2000" by Benjamin Stora; this book mainly talks about the history of Algeria; mainly going to focus on the FLN and how they had a part in the Algerian civil war.
"France, the United States, and the Algerian civil war" by Irwin M. Wall talks about how the United States comes into the war. But my main focus is on how the FLN was associated with the United States during the Algerian civil war. I will access information from books and the internet to get deeper into the FLN and amy parts I've skipped over.

    Plan of Investigation

The investigation discusses the significance of foreign intervention in the Chinese Revolution in the late 1940s. In order to discuss foreign intervention, China is investigated through its foreign trade and foreign relations. To complete the investigation, I will use a variety of sources to carefully value their purpose in the investigation. Some of these are: Revolutionary China; a personal account and A History of Chinese Civilization by William L. Tung and Jacques Garnet. These sources provide information about China in regards of foreign relations before, during and after the revolution. 8. Plan of investigation

I plan to investigate on the politics of the Algerian war and its effect on the outcome of the war. Using resources such as books to help me further my investigation and gather solid evidence, in which, will help me better answer the question. Using books as my resources is how I plan on helping me investigate to do so. Conflict & Crisis in the post-cold war world by James Ciment is a resourceful book I plan on using for my investigation on how politics had an effect on the outcome of the Algerian war. I will cite evidence to my IA from this book when there is good evidence to how politics had an effect the outcome of war. In order to gather good evidence I have to investigate on the economy and foreign intervention in order to help get more in depth with politics because those can be an influence to it in the outcome of the war.

The purpose of this investigation is to determine to what extent was the Chinese Civil War provoked by Sun Yat-Sen and how was he succeeded by Chiang Kai-Shek. I have a range of sources that I will use to answer this research question. Two of the books that I'll definitely be using are Warlord Politics in China 1916-1928 by Hsi-Sheng Ch'i and Chiang Kai-Shek by Emily Hahn. These books are helpful due to the fact that they elaborate on a variety of topics concerning both Sun Yat-Sen and Chiang Kai-Shek. These books explore the family background of both Sun Yat-Sen and Chiang Kai-Shek as well as what kind of leaders they were. Another thing I found to be useful for this investigation is Sun Yat-Sen's three principles and Chiang Kai-Shek's ideology which can be found in the two books I've chosen as resources.

Although I will discuss the family background of both Sun Yat-Sen and Chiang Kai-Shek, I will not go into depth regarding this particular topic. I will assess differences in ideologies and leadership.

To what extent did foreign involvement affect the outcome of the Spanish Civil War ?

The investigation assesses the foreign involvement of Spain which affected the outcome of the Spanish Civil War, this investigation also evaluates the role of Spain involvement through the event. Following the failure of the coup, the fratricidal contest was not a clash between two clearly homogeneous camps but a variety of bitter local conflicts.(1) Spain’s involvement within the outcome is investigated through novels as well as critical essays. Throughout my essay two of the sources in which I use, The Spanish Civil War by Francisco J. Romero Salvado and The Spanish Civil War, Reaction , Revolution, and Revenge, revised and expanded by Paul Preston.
The investigation does not assess the involvement of those countries in which were also involved in the Spanish Civil War nor does it include involvement of United States.

Question: How did the First and Second United Front counter the Japanese invasion, but not stop the tensions between the KMT and CPC?

In my investigation, I will be focusing on the First and Second United Front with its history during the Japanese invasion and during World War Two, also its rise and fall of the Front not being able to create peace between the KMT and the CPC. I am going to use the books that I picked from the library as my resources of being able to investigate my question. One book that will be helpful on my investigation is, “When Tigers Fight: The Story of the Sino-Japanese War, 1937-1945,” by Dick Wilson. This book will help me get information about the war that happened with the First and Second Front of preventing the Japanese invading China. It also gives a background history of the KMT and CPC relationship towards each other during the Chinese Civil War and the Sino-Japanese War. Another book that is going to help me on my investigation is the, “Revolutionary China: A personal Account,” by William Tang. I needed more information on the civil war with the warlords, the Japanese invasion and the communist victory in 1941. All of these events had the First and Second United Front being a success, but also showed the true relationship between the KMT and the CPC.

I am trying to do in my investigation is getting the right information and, go into depth on the First and Second Front it being a success of countering the Japanese invasion and not got into depth of how it changed the Chinese government. Also both United Front being a failure of solving the tensions between the KMT and CPC that led to the Chinese Civil War.

    Plan Of Investigation:
The topic of this investigation is to identify the impact of ethnicity and democracy which the Nigerian people faced during the civil war. During this investigation I will find and use as many helpful resources as I can in order to find the impact of democracy and ethnicity on the Nigerian people. Helpful resources I will be using are the internet/web and books. I found two very helpful books: Democracy and Cultural Diversity edited by: Michael O’Neill and Dennis Austin, The History Of Nigeria by: Toyin Falola. These books will help me investigate further about ethnicity and democracy during the Nigerian Civil war. They have enough of information which is resourceful to my question. I will obviously be focusing and analyzing the ethnic impact as well as the democratic impact towards the war.

    REASERCH QUESTION
Compare and Contrast the authority of Mao Zedong to the failures of the Kuomintang that led to the victory of the communists of China in 1949.

    PLAN OF INVESTAGATION
This investigation will be comparing and contrasting the authority of Mao Zedong to the failures of the Kuomintang which resulted victory for the Chinese Communism in 1949. The methods that are being used to compare and contrast the both, the leadership of Mao and the mistakes made by the Kuomintang are: gathering information about some of the Kuomintang’s mistake and see how they affected the Chinese communism, being able to describe and understand the road that Mao had set for China, and finally explaining how Mao’s authority led the Chinese communism to victory in 1949. One of the sources that will be used to make these methods possible is Philip Short, “Mao: A Life”, New York, New York, Copyright Henry Holt and Company, LLC, 1999. Another source is John F. Melby, “The Mandate of Heaven”, Toronto, Canada, and Copyright University of Toronto, 1968. There are many other sources listed that will be most useful to complete these methods however, these two sources are most beneficial because they go straight to the point of Mao’s leadership and the Kuomintang’s failures.

To what extent did the independence gained in the Algerian war affect France?

    Plan of Investigation

The investigation analyzes the affect that France had due to the independence gained in the Algerian war. To be able to analyze the affect that France had, the investigation analyzes the Algerian war and the outcome of Algeria gaining its independence. The two sources that will be used throughout this essay are: Algeria: France’s Undeclared War by Martin Evans, and Algerian Chronicles by Albert Camus. These two sources will help me because they talk about Algeria before, during, and after the war. These sources also include information about how the outcomes of the war affected both France and Algeria.

The investigation does not analyze the two main armed groups known as the Islamic Armed Movement (MIA) and the Armed Islamic Group (GIA), it just mainly analyzes the affect that France had after Algeria gained independence.

How did the KMT and CPC tolerate each other during their union for the Sino-Japanese war?

    Plan of investigation

The first step that I needed to take into investigating my Internal Assignment question; How did the KMT and CPC tolerate each other during their union for the Sino-Japanese war? Which on the Chinese Civil war, is to study the Civil war itself. From its beginning to its conclusion. Then afterwards I must study what made the KMT and the CPC hate each other. Exactly what stirred up conflict between the two groups. Then must study how many encounters they had with each other and whole dangerous they were to each other. From that point on I must now study what how serve the Japanese attack was on China to force the two rival groups to cooperate. I must also look into if there were disagreements during the merging and to my question How did they tolerate each other. And to finalize the investigation to analyze the merging of the two groups and create a conclusion. For example If the two groups can force themselves to work together to save China from Japan’s grip, why can't they work together again into improving China and creating a strong government like the United States’s. They two major parties the Republican and Democrats work other even when they have disagreements.
